Reza caught Patrick dead to rights when he asked "Are you asking better for me personally, or better for Iran?" because the upshot of the PBD podcast's individualist lens is that, on issue after issue, personal benefit gets conflated with general good. I watched the entire PBD podcast episode where Kyle was the guest. This Patrick guy and his friends constantly offer false equivalencies as their guest's only choices in a debate, and then suck each other off as genius winners when said guest(s) refuse to debate fantasy over reality. These megalomaniacs' tactics are not only intellectually lazy, these behaviors actually nullify any notion that they are having debate at all. I'm not sure that they actually understand what the meaning of the term "debate" is if they so blatantly frame their arguments outside of the premises the term requires...and so they just keep doing this every episode. I don't understand why they're not being challenged on the root issue - the inherent fallacies on which they frame their arguments? Yes , I'm sure they did work hard to get where they are at, but because they're in their current positions they live in a meritocracy in their own head. Their egos are insufferably and falsely huge and, again, became inflated as such under a completely false narrative. They assume that only their hard work led to their current success - there is no consideration in their minds that there were innumerable other factors in the universe that may have helped them get there. Oh no, indeed they are demonstrably superior human beings and everyone else should just shut up and take their talking to. Therefore, those who don't are in their lowly positions solely because of their own actions or inactions. These blowhards don't even consider the fact that to keep society functioning it is a requirement of reality itself that the vast majority of the population be the workers. How could you be successful in a business if everyone can be a business owner by the sheer power of being willing to work hard? Who's going to keep those businesses functioning if everyone has a business and no one works for those businesses? Their theories and mindset of "facts" are so easily shattered by only a rudimentary explanation of grade school mathematics!

They're cowards who cower when they get someone or groups who stand up to them. Bullies don't "give respect". And, in a capitalist society... bullies work for the government, not the private sector? Really? The biggest bullies are the oligarchs, because they look down on everyone, and prey on those they view as the weakest every day. The thing is, the Shah( king) was not murderous! It’s like saying it over and over and just accept it as a Fact! When you have Terrorists like these hardline Mullahs, and they get executed in jail because they have been doing burning or burning a Cinema Teather for example, can you call it murderous? First you have to see if the Shah was murderous at all or not, then accept it as a label Fact and go on with it! It’s what Reza is doing here! Shah even left the country when he realized people don’t want him, he caught everyone by surprise! He didn’t killed to stay in power unlike these Mullahs who execute 1000 people per year alone!

Kyle, I love you bro, but you need to stop speaking on Iran issue and get a little educated on this subject first. Or at least bring someone to your show who is educated on Iran and have a dialogue. I lived there for 25 years and will be happy to dissect this issue for you.

I wish PBD would just stick to business. He's so intellectually limited, it's cringeworthy. Every single time he "debates" someone, he's just punching way above his weight.

When you said there was no third option, at first I thought of course there is, we could always sit this one out if we wanted to. Then you said they like the "let's arm the rebels/probably have the cia/gb's go to work." I immediately felt like Marty Mcfly, pointing at the televison saying "oh yeah I've seen this one before."

Fun fact, the father of the drummer Stewart Copeland from The Police, Miles Copeland Jr. was in the CIA and a progenitor that helped orchestrate the 1953 Iranian coup d'état that ousted the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh and put Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi into power it was called “Operation Ajax” and the Shah killed and tortured many Iranians when in power until the internal revolution Islamic nationalist Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini win favor from the Iranian people and overthrew the Shah in 1979. I remember when this happened, I was 12- 13 and the hatred for the Ayatollah in the US became worse after the Iran hostage crisis and when Reagan was elected President. I remember people having these shirts and posters with the Ayatollah’s face on a target and I can guarantee the majority of Americans at that time knew nothing about the Shah’s repression of Iranians during his rule, nor about the coup that put him there. For Years, Stewart Copeland nor his mother and brothers knew about his father’s involvement in that coup.

Kyle, Mossadegh wasn't a national communist. He was more of a social democrat, and he didn't have a positive view of socialism and especially communism. Also, what the hell is a national communist? Anyway, this was still a good video. It was interesting, Reza Azlan out and about is a throwback!

Between the Shah & Khomeini, the latter has been better for the Iranian people, by far. Literacy, infant mortality, all HDI have improved enormously. Yes, it's a repressive regime, committed to ideology which isolates Iran, but only the Iranian people should decide their government.

The British have seemingly escaped all blame for Iran when it was all done on their behalf and because of them feeding intel to the US to make it appear the government was on the brink of falling to communists (and the Soviets WERE paying people off to make that happen as well, but it appears the British heavily exaggerated on this issue to draw the US into helping in the Brits ultimate aims). The Americans generally supported Iranian oil nationalization etc. but once the Brits fed us intel about communists, exploiting our cold war mindset, things changed. Even their parliamentary leader in Iran was using the soviet-backed foot soldiers in an alliance of convenience who brutally attacked their opponents, including the future wife of the Shah who was stabbed at school at 13 years old by these religious hardliners. What a f'ing mess the whole thing was. The Brits caused the political instability that set the stage for the coup w/ their blockade of Iranian oil as well. Bleh.

Kyle, What’s important to understand here is what Patrick’s main point is, however poorly delivered it was. Iranians and their Persian culture, traditions, history, has been held captive by this regime for 44 years. Iranians have been stripped of their identity by this radical and murderous regime. While there have been protests in Iran in the past, this most recent movement has given Iranians a new hope for change. Patrick’s point was that such negotiations with Iran will only legitimize, embolden, and empower a regime who’s people finally have a fighting chance to rid of after 4 decades of torture. Iranians want the regime to be choked by the neck and weakened and delegitimized as much as possible so that their uprisings can cause greater threat to the already trembling existence of the Islamic republic. To give them billions of dollars (theirs or not) which will go to Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt, and the pockets of mollah’s and politicians and not the Iranian people, would be detrimental to this movement in Iran. Such negotiations could prevent such action by the west, like declaring the revolutionary guard as a terrorist organization, which would be a huge blow to the functionality of the regime. This negotiation will set back Iranians from seeing their dictators vanish for decades longer. As an Iranian American, I and all Iranians I know approve of Patrick’s message in this clip with Reza (and Reza is wildly disliked among Iranians, by the way).
@lewhossofdoom Жыл бұрын
Just to add some nuance to this convo - a lot of iranians who protest the gov doesn’t want the US to negotiate with Iran and would prefer that the world isolate Iran to weaken the gov, hoping that could eventually lead to the end of the current regime. I have heard iranians argue for the US to invade Iran, i’m against that obviously because it would create chaos in the region and mass death and suffering. But there aren’t just two alternatives here: war or diplomacy. The west can also choose to isolate the Iranian gov, hit them with sancions but not escalate further.
@lewhossofdoom Жыл бұрын
Also, iranians on the gov side doesn’t chant ”death to the west” because the US helped get rid of the Iranian king. The people on the Iranian gov’s side was against the king and wanted him gone and replaced with a theocratic leader. They chant death to US because the Iranian gov’s propaganda paint the US as the source of all evil and all their country’s problems.
