"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

Here’s a quick little story… Once upon a time there was a fella with an extremely narcissistic personality named Kanye. Kanye had always wanted his own cult. Kanye already had fans who loved and worshipped his music, but Kanye wanted followers who would worship him. Kanye even started calling himself Yesus but Kanye knew that wasn’t enough Kanye wanted members in his cult who would think that any and every “poopity-scoop” idea he came up with was absolute unquestionable “genius.” For example if Kanye made a logo that basically looked like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, Kanye wanted to be surrounded by people who would call him a “genius” for it. Or if Kanye sold his clothing line out of what essentially looked like garbage bags in a department store, Kanye wanted people who would call it a move of pure “genius”. Again, Kanye so badly wanted his very own CULT. And one day along came another extremely narcissistic megalomaniac by the name of trump. Kanye was fascinated by (some might say obsessed with) trump because, Kanye noticed that trump literally has his own cult. Kanye wanted to know how trump did it. Kanye tried to get close to trump Kanye studied trump. Kanye noticed that a lot of religious people (specifically Christians) worship trump. So what did Kanye do? Kanye started a church Kanye’s music started sounding like church music. And Apparently now lots of people go to Kanye’s church services. So voila, Kanye is steady working his way to official cult status. Except he’ll prolly call it a “Kult” or something kool like that, cuz remember he’s a “genius,” just like trump. The end 🙂 Yay, aren’t cults wonderful?

Kanye has a lot of nerve saying stuff like this when he had a ton of his music produced in part by Jewish artists. On Yeezus he worked with a ton of artists in the French electro scene like Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk) and Gesaffelstein, both of whom have Jewish parents, not to mention A-Trak who toured with him and played a huge role in Graduation and his other hits in the 2000s. I use to live with someone who was diagnosed psychotic and I see a lot of similar traits in Kanye as I did him, especially delusions of grandeur which is one of the symptoms. He would sometimes think that everything he did was somehow intrinsic in world events. Was scary stuff.
@WinterReflections
@WinterReflections Жыл бұрын
Psychosis refers to a group of symptoms caused by multiple different mental illnesses. Bipolar disorder is one of them, and that's what Kanye is. There are varying degrees of severity of course, and in bipolar people psychosis usually comes from severe manic episodes...and Kanye has definitely shown signs of manic episodes numerous times over the last several years. He's proudly against taking medication for it too, so he is never going to get better. Mania doesn't stop or get better untreated, or even with therapy alone... His bipolar disorder + fame/infamy and an already huge ego is so dangerous.
@donnydogpiss4533
@donnydogpiss4533 Жыл бұрын
A diagnosed psychotic? I don't know, what you describe sounds more like a form of *psychosis,* typical with schizo disorders. Like, none of what you describe is intrinsically linked to or uniquely characteristic of actual clinical psychopathy, which is what being a "diagnosed psychotic" would entail. Are you sure you're not possibly misremembering the exact details of what he was diagnosed with? Maybe you mean he was diagnosed with some form of schizo-effective disorder? Because the whole _"He would sometimes think that everything he did was somehow intrinsic in world events."_ is straight up the kind of stuff you see in people with something like paranoid schizophrenia. I've known a person like that and yeah I agree about it being scary stuff. There were many times where it was profoundly unnerving interacting with them. The guy I knew was dead-serious convinced that "scientists" were somehow breaking into his home when he wasn't there and stealing the internal parts of his appliances/devices to build a machine (he didn't know what kind of machine, but he had many non-sensical guesses); that they were intentionally leaving subtle clues in his home about what they were doing - all to toy with him and show that they couldn't be stopped. At his worst, he even drew pictures of what he believed the machine to look like every now and then and gave me some of them to convince me. It sounds silly and funny, but it really wasn't.

He's been doing it for a long time now. That's what made me know Kanye was gone long before the "slavery was a choice" "Trump has dragon energy foolishness". When he gets in front of certain white interviewers (Ellen, Kris Jenner - when she had that show for a short stint, etc" he starts twanging like a white boy and behaving more docile. It's pathetic. I do feel bad for him. He's a terribly insecure man. But he needs to get this medicine he's about to get.

He grew up in the suburbs. Everything about him is a put-on. Like Kid Rock pretending to be from Detroit. Even Bill Maher has shown signs in his early stand up career that he was never really on the left.

I think, as does MTG, Ye goes on TV with the specific goal of saying the most outrageous, controversial and ridiculous things to enhance their media presence. If Marjorie wasn't saying the bat shhh stuff she does, the media would not bother putting her on air or in print. Ye wants to be in the headlines more often than the next time a new album drops.

Yes, it’s all a brilliant but machiavellian promotional strategy and the more people talk about him the more he keeps winning and making $$. It’s worked this far, now he’s just doubling down on it with a new more radical version of the same thing which burns more bridges but allows him to generate greater and greater amounts of controvery to remain in the headlines (and ultimately reach a new group of target fans). It’s the reason why people should stop constantly talking about his latest antics because they’re giving him exactly what he wants, Ye is a lot of things but dumb he isn’t, it’s just an act to keep him in the constant relevancy. (He even admitted to it himself in his stories by comparing himself to people like Andy Kauffman, it’s all a strategy and it works)

You're just wrong. It's extremely clear that he is suffering from genuine symptoms of manic episodes. He says the stuff he says because he actually believes it, because he is out of his mind not taking meds that he needs for bipolar disorder with the drug of fame making it worse. Kanye West was the biggest name in music with the most rabid fanbase and reputation for good music. He did not need controversy to get attention or sell records. He's actively destroying his legacy and alienating his own fans. What we are witnessing is genuine insanity, not outrage farming or whatever.

Thank you for pointing out at the outset that Kanye is most likely in the throes of a manic episode right now. That doesn’t “excuse” any of his conduct. But it does help explain it. And yet so often, pundits and commentators refuse to acknowledge that. I don’t have bipolar disorder, but I have close family members who suffer from it, and it just tortures them. It can be hard to believe if you’ve never witnessed it, but at the height of a manic episode, people can say and do really awful things they’d normally never say or do, including racist / prejudiced shit. Kanye needs help. It’s ultimately his responsibility to do that, but the sad fact of the matter is that, as one of the richest men in America, he’s extra deluded and also insulated by wealth and power, such that it’s much harder for people in his life to pressure him to straighten up. What disgusts me is how pieces of shit like Tucker Carlson will take advantage of Kanye when he’s unwell. A lot of mainstream media outlets aren’t much better. They profit more from a sensationalist narrative of Kanye’s behavior-a “crazy” Kanye-than one that relates his behavior to bipolar disorder or mental illness more generally. Fuck all of that discourse about “understanding” and “destigmatizing” mental illness: apparently a lot of liberals and Twitter bluechecks don’t give a green goddamn about that. If they did, they’d be talking about Kanye in very different terms. His behavior is unacceptable, of course. But instead of steering this into a productive, informative dialogue about bipolar disorder and mental illness, 90% of media outlets spin it into another bullshit sensationalist faux outrage. I just hate to see mentally ill people exploited like this.
@CL23Alpha

Sorry to have to say that, but being bipolar doesn't just make you say racist/prejudiced remarks if those sentiments weren't ALREADY present, even if they're usually hidden due to politeness or PC. These episodes just exaggerate negative (or positive) feelings, whether they're warranted or not, they don't create them out of thin air.

@@CL23Alpha I’m not a psychologist, and respectfully, I suspect you aren’t either. But I see what you mean, and you could be right. And I’m not actually that concerned about where such thoughts originate, in Kanye’s case. I believe most people in the world probably have prejudicial thoughts to one degree or another. And there’s really nothing wrong with that in and of itself. We can’t control what we “think,” i.e., what thoughts enter our head, past a certain point. What matters is whether you embrace and/or express such thoughts or act upon them. A mentally ill person like Kanye, in a state of psychological distress, will say wild shit they otherwise never would have said, because they’re uninhibited. Many people who experience bipolar disorder and similar mental illnesses in their daily lives will have witnessed this. And I think in states of psychological distress, the severely mentally ill are more susceptible to the kind of schizoid racist theories that circulate out there in the world. The paranoid logic and delusions behind many anti Semitic worldviews sort of reflect what a very mentally ill person with a condition like Kanye’s might be thinking when they’re at their worst.
@peytonsnyder997
@peytonsnyder997 Жыл бұрын
@@slamandjam2 That’s not really true, I don’t think-he hasn’t been consistently this erratic for five years. Kanye goes through phases where he appears to be more or less in good shape, judging from media interviews and appearances, as well as his social media activity. He’s also put on a lot of weight at times, which he seems to gain and later lose quite quickly. This is a classic side effect of many pharmacological treatments for bipolar disorder. But in any case, Kanye doesn’t make front-page news when he’s well. So there’s obviously a selection bias at play there. He has been generally more erratic since 2016, I think. Part of this is probably related to the lifecycle of bipolar disorder and similar mental illnesses. It’s very common for one’s symptoms to worsen in middle age, especially if it’s not being treated consistently. Stress also plays a major role, and between his business / fashion pursuits and his family life, I suspect that’s exaggerating his symptoms.

I see so much of her in Kanye here. It's so damn sad, especially with Kanye's very public manic episodes, those will affect his kids more than whatever he is trying to blame Kim for. I'm about to go radio silent with my mom, AGAIN, and this time I won't let her back into my life. I only did so this last time so I can have a relationship with my Dad again, the parent that actually raised me. I've heard her talking to herself how much she hates me but also loves me. She thinks I slept with the love of her life when I was a teenager. So she has dating my ex from when I was 18 and I'm 50 now.
