"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

That's the point. If it was recent, it would be more likely for someone to have caught him in his lie. "Hey, wait a minute, Sam Harris was JUST talking about this... oh, yeah, that wasn't remotely close to what he actually said!" He's relying on the fact that people won't remember what actually happened. It's part of the lie/grift. And his gullible fans eat it up, because they *WANT* to believe it. When you lack the data, and logic to defeat someone's arguments, you have to resort to "ThEy'Re eViL!!!!".

The way Alex Jones judges his own success, is by how well his character can take bits of truth, and weave them into lies. He knows exactly what he is doing. To him, the bigger the lie the more he feels the power of having sway over people. He just thinks of it as creative reinterpretation. I just finished my MA degree in political philosophy. It isn't very uncommon to have conversations about justified cannibalism and some other really uncomfortable stuff. But the whole point is to prove why our intuitions are correct about the moral ideals that we hold. I think the safer route would probably to go with intuitionism about our moral values Unless we can prove otherwise. But yes, we philosophers do talk about these kinds of creepy things behind closed doors. OooooOOoooo. To be fair, we also talk about it in public too though.

For additional context, Sam says this in a different interview: Quote: One thing that's happening to me now in conversations like this and on many topics, is that much of my discussions have nothing to do with policy but have been an effort to get at ethical bedrock, I mean I write and think as a philosopher. And in the context of having a philosophical discussion about ethics and right and wrong, you can say many things that seem crazy outside of a philosophy seminar, but in a philosophy seminar are totally legitimate. So in a philosophy seminar you can say, you know, _"Why can't we eat babies? What's wrong with eating babies? If we've got extra babies around that nobody wants, why can't we eat them?'"_ That is a completely insane thing to say in the world, seemingly. That is the kind of thing if quoted out of context, you know, if Glenn Greenwald decides to tweet _"Sam Harris can't figure out why we can't eat babies!"_ it makes me look like an asshole. But the reality is that if you're talking about, if you're trying to get to the bedrock, the ethics of good and evil and the use of force, then starting the conversation with _"why can't we eat babies? Give me an ethical argument about why it's really really wrong, why our intuitions of its wrongness can be conserved,"_ that is a totally legitimate thing to do, and there is not a philosopher on earth who would think you are a weirdo for having that conversation. End quote. Source: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYfPZHWApKqid7c Also, not only did the clip of transcript actually have sufficient context to show that Sam was not advocating for eating babies , but also when Alex is reading it aloud he replaces certain words which further takes Sam's words out of context and into "baby eating" territory. Transcript: _"...this is a conversation about how you can close the door to this idea that we both recognize as repellent and why we recognize it that way."_ Alex Jones reading it aloud: _"...this is a conversation about how you can close the door to this idea that we both recognize as repellent and _*_well_*_ we recognize _*_that it's the way_*_ ."_

Alex is completely correct. Harris calls it a "Samburger" or Sam's "Club Samwich". He also likes his Baby Back Ribs.

You have to scratch your head & wonder, sometimes. Like my Grandfather used to tell me, to paraphrase, 'a disproportionate % of the time, when people make crazy accusations, trying demonize others for certain behaviors, it is false rage they express. Most of the time, they are the ones guilty of the behavior(s) they seek to publicly demonize, & they're public anger is their personal defense mechanism used to alleviate the inherent shame they feel being guilty of what they claim publicly to abhor'. Maybe Alex Jones eats babies & is just projecting his own shame & guilt? Ppl are saying, just saying.

This just in: Jones has eaten babies -- and several dogs, cats, and snakes and opossums; and also dozens of shish-kabob gay frogs with added dainty marshmallows and green bell pepper in the famous Jones Fire Pit, which is now being raked for evidence. However, inquiring minds want to know: Are you saying your Grandfather was a grammatically lazy person, or are you just emulating his tragic post-stroke speech difficulties?

@@jackillingworth357 Stop being so paranoid. And trust me, you don't want to challenge my command of the English language, unless you have a half-hour to point something out that you're having trouble with -- besides my instantaneously intentional well-hung dangling preposition just before the previous comma, that is. My reply to your initial comment was in jest, so please call off the NATO hounds of your second reply (unless you're also kidding).

Of all the thing Alex Jones could say, this is one of them. Perfectly in character. Or maybe he isn't a character. Maybe he has become the mask.
@warbird333

Alex Jones' lawyers argued in court that he's playing a character, then Alex Jones released a video claiming that he is NOT playing a character and is completely honest on his show. So it's unclear if he really is crazy or playing a role.

1. He _is_ playing a character. 2. He’s also a government/military asset sent to destroy the “truth community” and be the face the media uses to equate REAL dissent with mentaI iIIness. He also once played the role of “Bill Hicks.” Not only has he admitted that multiple times, one of which was the most sincere he’s ever been, but there’s a mountain of evidence backing it up. But the Hicks stuff is irrelevant when compared to the overall role Jones has played for the last 20+ years. It’s just highly interesting to say the least.

Sam is a prophet. Before he utters the words that he KNOWS someone will clip and take out of context, he says someone will clip his words and take them out of context. Assuming Jones' audience has an average IQ of 70 is pretty generous.
