Range Rover theft is not a new phenomenon it's been a big problem forever! How come JLR seemingly have endless money to develop new models and new 4x4 systems? Yet they choose to ignore the biggest issue affecting owners...
@ajh555210 ай бұрын
This issue was raised way back in 2012 when i bought a new Range Rover Sport and JLR's answer was that all their vehicles conform to Thatcham category one security which is the industry standard so as long as we are conforming to that standard we are doing all we need to. So basically they were saying get stuffed and sort alternative security out if you wish. I am so pleased that this has now come back and scared them for life. Some are saying this could well be the end of the Range Rover in the UK. It really does serve them right if it is considering they haven't given two hoots about any of its customers all these years and i really feel sorry for all those that have had their cars stolen because of JLR's negligence.

Cheers Richard, on the back of your previous videos I have had a Scorpion S5 tracker and a Ghost 2 installed in my BMW X3, now knowing even if my keys are stolen they cannot drive the car away is a great feeling. The tracker data is very comprehensive.

All this technology, you would of thought jlr would have had a better security system , like a kill switch.

Oh well, back to the drawing board. Just spoken to National Farmers Union about insuring my 2019 RRS. Even with the Thatchem S5 Tracker, its still a no go as it is an across the board, don't care what you do to enhance security, we will not insure. Deep joy!!

Hi thanks for the video, this is an interesting watch. I had my Velar stolen back in May and we found it with a Samsung airtag after watching a video on youtube. We had a yellow steering lock on, but they cut through the steering wheel to get it off. We have since had a ghost 2 installed and turned off keyless go. We live in central London and it was a nightmare to get insurance which expired the day of our wedding! due to the theft we were getting quote of £28k py and Land rover insure just wouldn’t insure us at all, we nearly had to sell the car asap, but the very last call we made, we managed to insure it by adding to my company mini fleet through commercial insurance. I recently spoke to a office land rover service centre and he said had hadn’t come across a single theft with a Ghost 2 installed, but what is crazy this is not recognised by the insurance company? Also lastly we have a 2018 Velar, but the service center check and said there was no recall to retrofit the new security for our model? which i through was mighty odd as I thought all models in this time period needed them fitted (we bought the car 2 years ago)

Tried for quote on LR insurance wanted as much as others . Interesting there are 237 brand new RR sport for sale on Autotrader and there is meant to be 2 year waiting list - is this because of cancelled orders ? Some are being discounted by £5 k And a further 500 new model RR sport under 2 years old . I know 6 months ago to buy new there was a 10 k premium and very few on second hand market . Clearly buyers / owners are walking away and suggest in most cases it’s the insurance as a decent car .To make it worse if you wanted to trade up from 2020 previous model to new one , you are looking at adding circa £50 k to do it .

Good tips Richard 👍 The main thing for customers like you said are the age old security items but for people to actually own this car LandRover insurance product has got to work this time round. I’ve got feeling LandRover realise that this is their only way out of this mess.
@benrustt10 ай бұрын
The new ghost 2’s come with a fob which removes the need to enter your code each time; obviously they need to be kept separate from the keys at all times aside from when you’re about to drive your car though. Also, you don’t need to reprogram them monthly - at least with mine you don’t!

Thanks for all your content. I still believe getting 3rd party and taking fire and theft off the policy is going to be possible. Insurers will have to create a new product with enough pressure.

And that will just mean when it gets stolen you lose your car hence your money with no payout. That’s a great idea 😂

Great video, Richard. On locking the car, everyone needs to be aware that you need to push the lock button TWICE to ensure that you get full guard - I don't think the deadlocks are activated or the interior sensors are set without the second push. And when you lock the car, watch for the door mirrors folding - if they don't fold, there might be someone jamming the signal from your key.

Another great video Richard. I live in West London, I too noticed Landrover have included insurance again on their website yesterday. I have 9 years no claim and over 30 years clean UK driving license, I entered all our details on the Landrover site for an insurance quote on my £124k 2023 hybrid HSE Range Rover, but the moment I pressed submit I got an automatic decline message saying they are unable to insure me at this moment. So not help from Landrover.

Turning off the keyless go is a no brainer, quick and easy, it should help you right now sooner than have your car stolen, then be faced with higher premiums for whatever you buy down the road.

The CAN bus system is common on all modern cars. The issue is that manufactures have to make technical info public to allow third parties to develop diagnostics. It is a EU requirement to avoid all manufacturers having a monopoly. The thieves use the info!

A defence in depth approach is always best. Airtags flag up to anyone around with an iPhone who isn't registered with that/those tags. That was to stop people being followed home or stalked. Doesn't work obviously if the victim has an Android phone. The Ghost system is ok, but if crims want your car, they will just wake you up, and make you unlock it. Most trackers can be jammed and located. Hence why I mention defence in depth, because they more you have/enable, the more likely they move onto someone else. People need the mindset now that if the car is sitting unchallenged in the street or driveway, it's already gone, so how can they take it, if it's behind bollards, or a fence, or in a secure lock up etc. Make them need to take the extra step, then another step. People do more to protect household goods that are worth less than a Range Rover. Doesn't make sense.
@TenPester10 ай бұрын
I'll also add, that the car industry almost never come for regular pentesting or Red Teaming. They lawyer up anytime someone reports a security issue. They are feeling the pain from cold shouldering the infosec community. Sadly we're all affected by it, and they should take the hit for this, because they never commit to regular threat modelling or pen testing. It took my old company weeks to break the Jaguar Remote start app, and they submitted the issue to them, and it was months before they fixed it. Sec researchers are doing this unpaid to make sure companies secure their sh!t. They don't care. Stop buying their stuff. It's as simple as that. Protest with your wallet.

Android phones now also flag up if an airtag is following you. This was a recent update, not sure how available it is. The alert pops up pretty quick too.

Firstly thanks for all you are doing. What I don't understand is why 2022 onwards Range Rovers are still expensive to insure if you can get cover. They have the updated security yet my insurance has gone up from £980 to £2,300 for a 1 year old 2023 MY car with many companies, including Land Rover insurance refusing to insurance it. I live in rural Oxfordshire not London or Manchester.

I imagine there isn’t enough evidence for the insurers to know whether the new cars/software actually work. So guess they’re waiting for theft statistics over a year before changing.
@BionicRusty10 ай бұрын
JLR are THAT disinterested in their customers that I honestly think that this is actually engineered by them. They’ve recently made the statement to the press that they want to make the brand ‘exclusive’. If only the mega rich can insure them, then only the mega rich can afford them. Make sense? As someone who tried to love the brand with many cars, I have to say,…..despicable company.

You are doing an amazing job with this Richard. You certainly stopped me buying one and I thank you for that. As much as I would love to buy one I wouldn't want the worry of wondering if it would still be there when I return to it, and I most certainly wouldn't pay the extortionate insurance premiums on principle. The very sad thing is that the scumbag scalliwags who nick them have won!! SHAME ON JLR. It is outrageous that this is happening. Surely with today's technology it must be possible to overcome this but JLR clearly choose not to do so. If 98% of cars stolen are keyless go it's fairly obvious that the current keyless go technology should not be offered as an option!!

Yep same for me - I called them and no real explanation forthcoming other than some waffle about underwriting criteria.
