Securing those coils at the bottom like that gives the coil the maximum mechanical advantage for snapping those chains.

Something else I do when I haul coils is I take 2 straps will put them in x pattern to help hold a large coil. Never to much securement especially hauling these.

Guy loading that big coil gets it. It’s not about us or who or what they were. That’s a tough dangerous job. There used to be a begging bit of mercy. The Millcreek truck was right behind me. But decided to really slow it down near windows. They got it going a lot. They are in love and wanna see their son preferably in 90 days told me everything.

The most important chains are the ones that pull straight down.Dont forget to wrap or tie your binders. Perhaps rubber under your coil bunks, metal to metal will slip. But it looks great. Good job.

8,000 pounds limit on each chain and same with coil racks. I would put 2 chains in the middle, 2 to the rear and 2 to the front.

Wouldn't it help if there were two more logs (not sure of the official name) placed for redundancy? I know that's not being done but is there a reason? Just curious. My logic is even if it's able to roll over the first log, the second set of logs on track could be just enough to slow it down or stop.

You need more chains holding it from rolling forward. And your chains need to be at least at a 45⁰ angle from the coil. Those chains in the center I'd move them. Just my opinion

I'm curious as to where this coil was picked up since you did not use beveled dunnage. I'm with the other driver, I would have used 5 coil racks (10 k per rack)...... it's cheap insurance. With 5 chains, the WLL is good for 47K A 6th chain can't hurt if available. Other than the two observations, you did a dandy job of securing that coil. Mr. DOT Man ain't gonna fault you, assuming the coil is 47k or less.

I came here to say each coil rack is rated at 10k (at least mine are, maybe OP has space-aged coil racks). Gonna need at least 4 for exactly 40k lbs. or 5 to be safe in case the shipper slipped an extra pound in there

I’m not a truck driver, but why wouldn’t it make sense to load it on its side? Seems it’d be a lot more stable?

Depends how the customer receives the coils, some customers can only offload the coils a certain way so they must be placed in accordance
@BiggTyM104 ай бұрын
Can't lift it like that. A lift or a crane picks it up through the center hole
@experimenting81744 ай бұрын
@@BiggTyM10 ok but why can’t the crane align the hole parallel to the long axis of the truck? Couldn’t the truck just approach the crane sideways? Not a trucker, clearly, just can’t understand why on earth there isn’t a way to do that
@BiggTyM104 ай бұрын
@@experimenting8174 it can be loaded "shot gun"...when the eye is facing front and back.....but can't secure it as well that way, because of the limited amount of chains that can be applied. If it's laid on its side....the coil stands a better chance of being damaged.

Everything on that coil is wrong, you do not hook your your chains to your guard rail, the chain has to hook into itself, plus there no steel edge protection from the chain to the coil

Why don't they lay these down so they can't roll?
@johnkowloon81875 ай бұрын
You pull into a warehouse with several hundred of these coils.. they are loaded with an overhead crane that has a lifting device that looks like a big c shape the lower goes thru the coil eye which with the protective rings will not deform the coil. There are 2 ways to load the coils #1 is called suicide which the coil eye fa es the lateral edge of the trailer as shown in the video and #2 is shotgun which the coil eye faces the back of the cab..the Chai I g procedure for shotgun is to cross the chains through the eye front to back an 1:33 d back to front..these coils are no joke so 5/16 chain is never to be used only minimum tagged grade 70 3/8 chain and equal grade ratchet or boomer binders be used..I prefer boo.ers because they don't twist the chain..I've rarely seen anyone take proper care of ratchet binders or use precaution of twisting the chain..or even using g corner protection for that matter but that's another can to open..stop storing straps on the winches..bungee the winches in the center of the trailer to keep the road shit off them much as possible and off the front axle of the trailer..

Listen get off the road please.....theres so much wrong with this securement its crazy...technically by FMCSA regulations you dont have it secured at all... For starters if its a 45k lb coil then it should have 5 coil racks not 3 not 2 not 4 who told you that? 1 rack for each 10k of weight Secondly you have 2 of your chains hooked to the RUB RAIL not the trailer are you mad? THOSE DONT COUNT AS SECURMENT also you have them wrapped around spools (the round piece thats welded in connecting the rub rail to the trailer between the stake pockets) You can teardrop chains using a stake pocket and a spool or just a stake pocket alone but you can't simply use a spool because its welded in. You gotta be safer out here man this stuff aint a joke i been doing it 8 years
