Security Forces has a strong culture and history of "Defending the Base." The AF/A4S has implemented the Reconstitute Defender Initiative to enable Defenders to be more lethal and more capable of completing mission sets. Hear directly from Lieutenant General Cooper, AF/A4, and Brigadier General Tullos, AF/A4S, on how your leadership is working to modernize training, weapon systems, and resources. While these and other initiatives aim to enhance your capabilities, it is equally important that you understand your core responsibilities, get back to the basic fundamentals, and build future Defenders. Defensor Fortis.

I was an Air/Security Policeman, 1966-1970. I have followed the career field with the help of my membership in the Vietnam Security Police Association. The training and job descriptions have taken on huge, positive changes since Vietnam. The Officer and NCO corps is top notch. The training is in-depth, continuous and excellent, especially compared to what I and most of my contemporaries received. There are many challenging specialties within the SF career field that can be achieved if you have the drive and determination to succeed. My son-in-law was in the Army in Iraq and he said the SF troops went "outside the wire" right along side the Army troops during searches. If you want deployments and action, your best choice would be to qualify for assignment with the 820th Base Defense Group. This unit deploys as a unit much like Army units, with it's own HQ, medical personnel, cooks, etc. Their history dates back to the Safeside units that were trained in the mid to late 60's for deployment to Vietnam. Security Forces today is a far, far better organization than it was during the Vietnam War. The leadership, training and equipment are the best the Air Force has to offer.

I server 12 years as USAF/SP 1980-1992: Good times with assignments in Puerto Rico, Utah, United Kingdom, Italy & Kansas. Things have changed. SP wasn’t given the credit, training and equipment it deserved back in those days, but it was still fun. For what I have seen, those have greatly improved. This generation should build on it and enjoy it.

As a Retired AF SP Senior NCO; I would like someone to please explain to me when the Beret is now worn. I thought the Beret was the Official headgear for the SP/SF career field; at least it was when I retired in 1987. We did not have the Flash on the Beret at the time, we did have the Command or Numbered Air Force crest pin on it however. When it was approved, we wore it with ALL uniforms, and the White Hat went away (at least for us in Law Enforcement). Lately however, I notice that the two NCO SF personnel standing at the foot of the steps for Air Force One are always wearing the AF Blue Hat and not a Beret. Why is that? Further I want to salute all those who are now serving in the SF field and helping to keep the AP/SP/SF career field and Ideals going. DEFENDING THE FORCE.

1971-1975. They called us Security Police back then. It wasnt one force. You were either in Law Enforcement or Security. Law Enforcement were your patrolman and worked the gates, no civilians allowed. Security worked the ramps, or flight lines and the Silos. E-4 was a Buck Sgt then. I was Desk Sgt my last year. Once the USAF was done with me (Vietnam was winding down and they were massively reducing personnel) I was out in the cold just in time for the 1975 recession. Being out of USAF was a shock. Barely managed to get a job as a security guard which I found humiliating. Moral of this story is dont waste your time while in and work on your future, cause they have no problem dumping you. Although I went on to become a Detective with a large West Coast Department, the 4 years as Security Police was a waste, had nothing to do with hiring process. Security Police and civilian law enforcement are two different animals., security forces may resemble Police work, but come on, lets be truthfull, its like one step above Security Guard. My experience was bitter sweet, some good times and some bad, especially when it came to the bitterness of some Lifers. Thery I dont miss, nor do I miss the pettiness of the military.

@@noamavgar5719 So is this how you also think of the Army MP Corps? I would hazard a wild guess that if you made the same comments to them, you have your "A**" handed to you. Security Forces ARE the MPS of the Air Force. In my day, I started in the Air Police field, then in 1967 the title was changed to Security Police, then in the early 1990s again changed to Security Forces. Each title change was done to reflect the new additional responsibilities that came into and with the field. When I was in Vietnam, at Tan Son Nhut AB; I met many Army personnel, who when they were on our Base, or were serving on our base for their Army duties, were glad we were there guarding it for them to feel safe. The Security Forces field has a motto in Latin on their Blue Beret "Defensor Fortes" it means in English "Defenders of the Force" The Blue Beret and motto was EARNED in Vietnam and has been in practical application since then. Meaning that the job and duties are taken very seriously at all times. EACH and EVERY position in ALL Military Service Branches has their reason for being, so you should NEVER belittle any other persons position in a Branch of the Armed Forces. A Person/s assigned to these many varied positions try on a daily basis to do the very best they can within them; unless that person/s are simply slackers and nothing can change that. Are you or were you aware that behind each" front line war fighter" that it takes approx 50+ support personnel to make that happen? So just where would you or your brothers or sisters in arms on the line be without them behind you? By the way, since Vietnam; just where are the FRONT LINES? Today it is EVERYWHERE and IN ALL Countries, INCLUDING our own USA. Think about that sometime. You may sign me a Retired AF SrNCO (Security Police) 60-87
