Security+ or SSCP or CISSP | The Best IT Security Certification for your tech career! | ISC2 and CompTIA
----------------------------------------------------
CompTIA Security+ is the first security certification a candidate should earn. It establishes the core knowledge required of any cybersecurity role and provides a springboard to intermediate-level cybersecurity jobs. Security+ incorporates best practices in hands-on troubleshooting, ensuring candidates have practical security problem-solving skills required to:
Assess the security posture of an enterprise environment and recommend and implement appropriate security solutions
Monitor and secure hybrid environments, including cloud, mobile, and IoT
Operate with an awareness of applicable laws and policies, including principles of governance, risk, and compliance
Identify, analyze, and respond to security events and incidents
Security+ is compliant with ISO 17024 standards and approved by the US DoD to meet directive 8140/8570.01-M requirements. Regulators and government rely on ANSI accreditation, because it provides confidence and trust in the outputs of an accredited program. Over 2.3 million CompTIA ISO/ANSI-accredited exams have been delivered since January 1, 2011.
About CompTIA certifications: The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is a leading voice and advocate for the $5 trillion global information technology ecosystem; and the estimated 75 million industry and tech professionals who design, implement, manage and safeguard the technology that powers the world’s economy.
Through education, training, certifications, philanthropy and market research, CompTIA promotes industry growth; the development of a highly-skilled workforce and a commitment to creating an environment where innovation happens and the opportunities and benefits made possible through technology are available to all.
We are a vendor-neutral, independent source of information on a wide range of technology topics, including cybersecurity; education, training and certification of the global tech workforce; new and emerging technologies; legislation and policies affecting the industry and workforce data, development and trends.
Our membership and certification holders span the full range of technology companies from established Fortune 500 leaders to small and medium-sized tech businesses that help customers solve real business problems around the world; and emerging tech-service innovators that support the implementation and management of the latest technology solutions.
SSCP certification demonstrates you have the advanced technical skills and knowledge to implement, monitor and administer IT infrastructure using security best practices, policies and procedures established by the cybersecurity experts at (ISC)².
The Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP®) is the ideal certification for those with proven technical skills and practical, hands-on security knowledge in operational IT roles. It provides confirmation of a practitioner’s ability to implement, monitor and administer IT infrastructure in accordance with information security policies and procedures that ensure data confidentiality, integrity and availability.
The broad spectrum of topics included in the SSCP Common Body of Knowledge (CBK®) ensure its relevancy across all disciplines in the field of information security. Successful candidates are competent in the following seven domains:
• Security Operations and Administration
• Access Controls
• Risk Identification, Monitoring and Analysis • Incident Response and Recovery
• Cryptography
• Network and Communications Security
• Systems and Application Security
Earning the CISSP proves you have what it takes to effectively design, implement and manage a best-in-class cybersecurity program. With a CISSP, you validate your expertise and become an (ISC)² member, unlocking a broad array of exclusive resources, educational tools, and peer-to-peer networking opportunities.

I have passed the SSCP in 2020 March and I passed the CISSP in 2023 February and have to admit this was the righteous way. I needed this additional years to be enough mature for the CISSP. When I prepared for the SSCP I had 6 years of experience in IT, and 1,5 year dedicatedly in security, so basically I followed that exact career way what you described here. Many people are aiming for the CISSP for the first, but I don’t think it is the good way.

Just want to recommend if I may if anyone is planning on working for the Government as in you have a clearance already, you may want to take a look at the DOD approved 8570 baseline certifications, and move from there because what you DON'T want to do is get a bunch of certs you don't need however CISSP is definitely one you ultimately are going to need/want if you plan on any role in cybersecurity

Thank you so much Perez, for the content it’s very educative and informational. I recently enrolled in a Bootcamp that was costing more dollars that I don’t really have so I stumbled into the CC program with isc2 to start with since I’m pivoting from sales. What do you think compares to the CompTIA entry level?

The classic (and well earned) security certification for Comptia is the Security+. It is a great certification that looks at everything you need to know to get started in security.

So you have one cert list that's aligned with the DoD 8040 as a IAT LvL II, however comparing sec+ with two IAT LvL III certifications i.e SSCP and CISSP. Abetter more accurate comparsion would have been replacing sec+ with an IAT LvL III like CASP+
@PerezTheDev
@PerezTheDev Жыл бұрын
True, I was mainly looking at the more common certifications. What are your thoughts on the CASP+?

Hello! Can you give me a suggestion regarding my profile. I did my bachelor's of 4 years in Mining Engineer. Now I want to make a career switch by getting into IT Project management. So for this I've decided to go for a post graduation course in PM from Canada. Now I need the technical knowledge as well because I'm from a non technical background. Which certifications would you suggest to get an understanding of the IT industry. I'm planning on giving PMP in the future as it requires some work experience.

Not really sure… check out the job descriptions and look for what is consistently being asked for! After a while I’m sure you will find repeating requirements and expected skills.

Hey Perez, I have my Bachelors in IT and Informatics and 2 years of work experience. I spent my first year on the Helpdesk in a Support Analyst/Jr. Administrator role and I currently work as a System Administrator. Would you recommend me going for the SSCP over the Sec+? I know the Sec+ is more well known however I am looking for a more intermediate Certification. What would your recommendation be in my case.
@WattupAnthony

i have my sec+ during my first 3 years of IT msp support. I think 2 years is when took my sec+. I recommend sec+ first because it introduces you to all types of secruity. You may not like being a practitioner and want another path. i am taking my sscp in 1 month
@PerezTheDev

It really depends what you want to do and what you want to convey to hiring teams, the SSCP is a bit more advanced than the Sec+ but as you said the Sec+ is also more well-known. You could also look at doing CCNP-security focusing on networking and security. Just think about what you want to do and where you are currently at!

Sec+ is an intermediate level cert. Required for many US DOD jobs/contractor jobs. No formal experience requirement. Don't underestimate it.
