What would have been a great add on to this already amazing video would have been: 1) Data Privacy 2) Cost of extra accessories, for example: SimpliSafe Door/Window sensor VS Ring VS Nest 3) Intergration into Home Automation (to Alexa, Google A or HomeKit). Overall, great job and unbiased opinion.

Bought the SimpliSafe system for our new home because of your videos. We like it so far. One note though...We ended up screwing in all of our entry sensors because one night one of the sensors fell of the window, which set off our alarm. We didn’t realize the system was hooked linked to the monitors yet and our phones were set to “do-not-disturb.” Needless to say the authorities knocked on our door that night around midnight to see what was up. Not a great intro to home security and in other cities you might receive a fine for that sort of thing. All of that said, I recommend using the tiny screws in each sensor pack to ensure they don’t ever fall off.

One thing that would have been nice is a review of the main everyday use components (those aside from the base stations): Video doorbells, cameras, and control panels. The quality of camera's (particularly outdoor), the features of the video doorbells (and quality), and the functionality/features of the control panels seem to always be missed in these reviews. None of those were ever mentioned here.

Honestly J.D, the video would have been hours long if I had to go through all of that! I can tell you that Nest has the highest-quality equipment but it's also by far the priciest. I have a friend who has Ring and he is happy with the notification of his doorbell. I wanted more monitoring with a good customer service as well as a fair price. I had low batteries on a few items right out of the box and they sent me new fresh units, a return envelope with label for returns and they even gave me a few months of free full monitoring. Yes, I went with SimpliSafe and so far happy but there can and will be improvements with our community input. Great unbiased and factual video.

I am not really interested in the Ring system, but it certainly has a lower initial cost and lower monthly cost. But I do like the fact that the Nest Secure uses Brinks monitoring because I used them in the past. Their system helped stop two burglars in my home. I don’t like that there are no glass break options for the Nest, but I will still go with them at the $19 per month plan.
@alexisjankowski32814 жыл бұрын
But something to note is the monthly monitoring doesn’t include fire monitoring. Hopefully it will one day. That’s definitely a downside.
@SecurityDotOrg4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexis, Glad to hear you had a good experience with the Brinks monitoring for Nest! Agreed that I wish they had a glass break sensor and that fire monitoring should be included...but i will say that their monthly prices are going to lower in early next year, so that's a plug. More info on Ring vs. Nest vs. SimpliSafe here: bit.ly/2YHI0NQ

Were you using a Nest Security system when those two burglaries occurred? One major thing to know is back in 2010 ADT Security purchased up Broadview Security. BRINKS Home Security spun off and name changed to BROADVIEW Security around 2009. This might be a completely new BRINKS and not have all the original people behind it.
@TreesOnTheBeach4 жыл бұрын
I went with Ring, due to the overall price difference (monthly AND up-front purchase). I regret the decision. After a 10-hour drive to install it in my house down south, two hours into the drive home the camera lost wifi connection. Can't get it fixed nor get any support from Ring unless I am at the camera itself, and I know they're just going to ask me to reset it. I have never had to reset my Nest Thermostat. It just always worked, and has for several years now. Wish I had went with Nest.

I like Ring because it works fine for us with no monthly fees. It does not matter if we are 3000 miles away from home. If the water heater leaks, I know immediately. Hey man! Not bad review on the products, however I sensed a little bias. I have the Ring door bell cam. So then I read reviews etc., and I decided to go with Ring. Now I’m no tech and yet I set the system up quickly without using the videos. The app itself tell you to scan each component, and then place where you like. You also didn’t mention each component has a anti tamper alarm which will alert you via your tablet phone etc. you can also customize each and every component and even disarm and arm from your phone etc. you also didn’t mention every component and the base station and key pads, have battery back up Incase of a power outage. Not to mention you can mount your keypad or base using 3M’s command double sided tape as I did so walls aren’t damaged. Also the Ring alarm also works with other products such as First alert smoke & CO detector with Z wave, and works with Schlage electronic locks their encrypted ones for peace of mind. Oh I forgot during a power outage your Ring alarm also has cellular back up so the monitoring station continues to see if your ok or not. These are a few of the things you forgot to mention with Ring. So when doing a review maybe give all the facts, and hey I get it you may have a preference and that’s cool. I don’t know about the other 2 so I won’t say anything, but Ring has much more than you mentioned. Oh did you mention it also has neighborhood showing what’s going on with fellow Ring alarm clients everything from footage of criminals to lost puppies. Or that it works with Alexa and Google assistant.... Plus they are adding features all the time. So in the future maybe put the full info out there. Anyway have a good one! Hope your enjoying whatever alarm you have! I love the Ring system cameras alarm locks etc. take care!

Security Baron Hey man how’s it going? Ok I understand then knowing now there’s a time constraint. I actually have the Ring doorbell Pro lol yes with the Alarm 2 keypads , First Alert, and Schlage Locking system. I do have more security equipment, and I put another company sticker up so the bad guy thinks read up on that product to defeat it, and oops wrong alarm type and cops are on the way. Not to mention the bad guy is on several cameras. Lol. Hey I want to say thanks for responding! I wasn’t frustrated, I just didn’t know if you knew all the features. Either way it was a great review keep up the good work man! Have a good one! 👍

I got simplisafe safe and didnt have it for over a hour The cameras didnt ever connect and my system kept saying it was already pre programmed to someone else account So I switched to the ring And its 100× better So easy to set up and I love the app The only thing people need to know is that there isnt a window break sensor
@neurophilosophers994 Жыл бұрын
So basically Simplisafe is the best for overall experience but will cost you more and doesn’t have as many compatible home devices like nest does. But Ring is the good enough option that doesn’t cost too much. I think Ring makes sense then, since you probably will spend 99% of your time not thinking about it…as long as you get that professional monitoring + cell back up and a camera then you should be good. The rest is extra

Ring sorta outsources their monitoring, it is monitored by rapid response monitoring, but they monitor for ALOT of alarm companies, and you can even buy your own wired equipment (Honeywell DSC, ETC.) And have them monitor it for you.

In the UK the monitoring services cannot call the police, the police will only attend intruder systems with a URN, which can only be obtained by installing a system to the correct British/European standard.
@seascapes1524 жыл бұрын
Simpli Safe : Doesn't provide self monitoring unless you purchase pro monitoring at $25 a month, which breaks my heart because that system could have easily been my favorite. ❌ Nest : HIGH price for only a few components. Need to throw in a camera or an extra sensor for over $400? & $30 a month for cellular back up? Great cameras though, but extremely high pricing❌ Ring: Only $10 a month for cellular back up bc wifi can be iffy, most aforbadle security system at $179, buying the security system and buying a camera($100) together is cheaper than nest security system alone, and college apartment friendly with the adhesives✔

I heard ring open network lets anyone see camera feeds. Is this true? and how is it with the other 2 mentioned here?

So basically hackers found a bunch of Ring usernames/ passwords that had been stolen, so the company advised everyone to change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication. People have also criticized Ring for it's partnerships with the police, which the Senate has investigated: bit.ly/2rvTI2o SimpliSafe and Nest haven't had those privacy issues, although Nest is owned by Google which isn't known for being amazing on privacy. I'd say as long as you have a unique, long and complicated password for each account with additional authentication, you will probably be fine. Here's my full review of Ring vs Nest vs SimpliSafe for more info: bit.ly/2YHI0NQ

I believe Nest no longer "exists". How does Ring compare with Simplisafe frequency security? I heard Simplisafe can get jammed with a 433 MHZ transceiver. Bought one to test it out on my system. Ring uses 908 MHZ...how easily is that jammed? I'm very concerned with wireless systems. Everything is jammable but is there some harder to jam than others?
@SecurityDotOrg3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ltcwinger. Technically, it can be jammed. However, you should be alerted to the fact that the sensors aren't working, especially if you have Ring Protect Plus with cellular service.

@@SecurityDotOrg Totally agree but my concern is if I'm away and can't get to my phone to see a notification. Will Ring make a call to the police or access my cameras to see (don't really like this second option)? It maybe just regular interference and not a burglary. I'm leaning on going back to a wired system. I wouldn't mind if it was difficult to get access and use these jamming modes but it just seems to easy.. .if I was a burglar I would just have the proper jammer matching the home's security sign. Modern concerns I guess.

can you use say.. simplisafe for home security but use ring floodlights on the same system? i mean i dont see why not, its just i like the look of rings floodlights but i like the simplisafe home security system... i just bought a home and havent yet moved in ...soo im just doin a little research
@SecurityDotOrg4 жыл бұрын
You can use them both but you'd have to use 2 separate apps. More info on the SimpliSafe security system: bit.ly/2XAi5ro And here's an Amazon link for the Ring floodlight camera if you decide on it: bit.ly/2Z0UXCa

We're looking for a home security system, we have a ring doorbell pro 2 and one of them light fixtures + camera. My concern is the recent reports of Ring sharing data. Should this be a concern? Do you have any details on this at all?
@SecurityDotOrg4 жыл бұрын
Hi, great question! So basically, the police have to ask you before they can access your footage, and you can say no. However, there have been many security concerns and it's actually being investigated by the government right now. Here's a news article on the investigation from my website- bit.ly/2rvTI2o Ultimately though, you already have the video doorbell, so it makes sense to continue with Ring for your light fixtures and camera, as you'll be able to use everything in one app. Here's my review of the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery: bit.ly/30jnowx

Thanks for the insight great points. For adding 4-5 exterior cameras which would be your choice?

Hey. I’m gonna do van life a while. Do you know of any cameras that are sleek? The simplysafe camera has good battery life but it looks big. Anything smaller? My van is black, does the simplysafe outdoor camera come in black? Do you know how much the base station draws in power? Either in watts or amps. This is important as I will live in a van.

Ring was never a serious contender. Their system doesn’t offer a glass break detector, and no Alexa does not count as one. I don’t want something monitoring my conversations just to have glass break detection.

Great presentation. Wondering if parts are interchangeable. Say a Ring Doorbell unit hooked up to say SimpliSafe base unit. Or, is each company’s products proprietary only. Thanks.
@DogManDan4 жыл бұрын
all security systems are proprietary for "security" reasons. Also professional systems are the way to go if you actually want protection not any of these 3 low end consumer cash grabs
