Sedan Battle: Hyundai Verna v Volkswagen Virtus v Skoda Slavia v Honda City | Drag Race | evo India

This isn't a review of the sedans. This is a mega shootout - an outright performance test of the new Hyundai Verna, the Skoda Slavia, the Volkswagen Virtus, and the Honda City. Out of these, the Hyundai Verna is the newest kid on the block and comes in all guns ablaze. It's got the turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine, just like the Slavia and the Virtus, but it's the most powerful and is mated to the much desirable 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Slavia's ace is its 6-speed manual transmission, and that of the Virtus is its 7-speed DSG. Both the cars make the same power, but throw it down differently. The Honda City has a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine which gives it a horsepower disadvantage but it comes in hot with its reliable powertrain. Each one of these sedans has something special and unique, but which one will trump over the others? Sirish Chandran and Aatish Mishra line them up for a drag race to find out. Oh, and as special, the ultimate winner of these drag races gets pitted against a 20-year-old legend. This is going to EPIC!

Automatic transmissions are faster than manual transmissions. Only sequential gearboxes are faster than TC/DSG. CVT is faster than everything possible (that's why it's banned in F1).

The City got a quarter mile time thats only 1.3s below a turbo petrol. That too with the sad CVT. Would be very interesting to see the same test with a manual.

Great to see such head-on comparos. Not sure if DSG was in Sport mode, as that makes quite a difference. Normal drive mode on DSG in VW/Skoda 2.0 cars is very conservative in initial gears and it takes a moment to realize that it should get back to its true DSG nature. Sport mode remedies it and makes it more sharper with putting down power.

Appreciate the comparison, good work. However, it is unfair to pit manual against DCT gearbox and the initial lag of the auto box does have a big impact in the results. The previous gen Verna's Torque Converter Auto on 1.6 diesel was much superior and will be missed very much with petrol-only variants on offer these days. It would be interesting to see the manual petrol comparison of all the cars.

But Verna is still inferior in overall driving dynamics, poor steering response, and absolutely shit suspension. You will never feel comfortable and in control inside a Verna driving @ 180 kmph , the way you get confidence in Skoda/VW.. And, also , as on date you can say, ,that Verna at best, just matching the Germans in Drag race. ( Still not comfortably beating them).VW GT also getting launched in MT now, that will be interesting..

What a cringe fest : (1) drag racing sports cars with 400-500bhp is understandable, since they are purpose machines for track, and the customers; purpose for buying them is to massage his ego and gloat about the numbers in his circle. But doing the same with fwd commuter cars with ~150bhp and killing clutches is silly - what is the use of the information regarding which of 4 commuter cars has the quickest 1/4 mile ? Instead, if the reviewers did some cornering tests with cones, a ride quality test with a half glass of water , an NVH test with a noise-o-meter etc, it would've been useful for the real world. But no, we want a drag race because the top priority of consumers in india is street racing to a background score of needlessly bassy music where they all get to pretend to be VinDiesel from F&F movies. Truly cringe. (2) Why is it a surprise that a 1.5TSI is slower than a 1.8/2.0 TSI , and then blaming it on emissions ? doesn't the presenter know about the larger engine in the older octavia VRS ? (3) The presenter doesn't know about the difference between VTEC and i-vtec. And this is one of the top automotive channels in India.

We tried both, brake torque and just flooring it. Neutral dropping is hard on the transmission and not recommended

Why not manual Verna and city? I mean you guys are all about driving thrills, but in which world does CVT give driving thrills? The Verna 1.5 turbo manual vs 1.5 Slavia/Virtus manual would’ve been really thrilling to see. Well lucky for manual drivers who really want the Virtus GT but can’t because it’s DSG (and they want manual not automatic), VW is launching manual soon on Virtus GT too (since few GT owners were complaining for that)
