I was fortunate enough to be on board one of those as a civilian aviation photographer landing on the U SS Forrestal to spend three days roaming around the ship taking about 2000 pictures during those three days. An experience I will never forget... On deck I always had a 'Guardian Angel' with me telling me where to go and stand so I wouldn't get my head chopped off or washed overboard by the blast of an Intruder or Hawkeye. And once inside the ship to guide me through the maze of hallways and pathways... how they can find their way in it is still a miracle to me, everything looks exactly the same. I gained an enormous respect for the people on board doing a fantastic job... around the clock.... 6 months away from home and country....

I had a friend of mine who was in the Navy He was on an aircraft carrier and he said that the most scariest time of his whole life was the first time he was ever on the deck of an aircraft carrier when they were launching and recovering planes.

An empty flight deck changes the whole feel of the ship. When you can see the huge empty expanse of the flight deck it makes the ship seem larger. Having all the aircraft on deck makes it seem almost cramped and smaller than it really is. Likewise, there is more of a sense of movement when you can see the so much of the deck moving in relation to the horizon. With the planes aboard you aren't seeing much of the horizon unless you are close to the deck edge; then you lose the perspective of the deck moving against the horizon. I never really appreciated how much almost 100,000 tons of ship could move until the Enterprise did a day or two of typhoon avoidance off the Philippines. The airwing stayed ashore at Cubi Point while we went out and steamed in circles. The swells got fairly big and from the flight deck you could really see it moving against the horizon. Normally there is almost no sense of motion when you are aboard a ship that big, though I'm sure the perspective must be completely different when trying to land an aircraft on it.

In 1982 or thereabouts, I rode a C-2 from Rota, Spain out to the USS Eisenhower in the Med as part of reporting aboard my next ship (USS Thomas C. Hart FF-1092) who was part of the Ike's task force. As passengers, you're facing to the rear and the arrestor hook landing was... interesting. When it was time for us to disembark via the drop-down ramp, I looked towards the bow to see if I could find where all my guts had traveled to after that stop. I spent three days wandering the Ike while waiting for the Hart's LAMPS Mk II helicopter to fly over and pick up mail (most important), 16mm movies (second-most important) and an STG2 reporting aboard (Ehh, I guess we have to take him over.) Fun times and the only carrier landing I can actually say I've experienced.

Sounds a lot like the combat landings they did into Baghdad. No hooks or anything but the flying is erstic and you drop a ton of altitude at once so no one shoots you. Pretty sure I left my stomach somewhere around 1000 feet

These videos are invaluable to be. I'm working on a VR hobby project involving Navy aviation, and having never served, there's so many small, mundane details that I have no way of learning about other than videos like this. I would love to see everyday details about life aboard the boat, including tours showing the progression from sleeping area to ready room, and whatever else you do to prepare for a flight. Heck, even just knowing how you get from the ready room to inside the cockpit would be invaluable reference!

VERY nice - I got flown aboard via Greyhound 3 times - was an ASWModule analyst who agreed to cross-deck between departing/arriving carriers in the mid to late 1990s (the billet was VERY short-handed). Even got 2 CAT shots off aboard a Greyhound - unnerving sitting BACKWARDS... and a good number of flights aboard Vikings as Senso. I still PREFER to come aboard in a nice leisurely manner aboard a Seahawk or Sea King.
