I didn't realize he was this funny and if a joke ever falls flat he can certainly fall back on his charm. He's got some wickedly killer deadpan looks and perfectly timed pauses and reflective looks at the audience. I just watched this on the NBC News app and it seemed like such a bomb that I decided to check out the comments about it on KZbin, but here they are all so positive and even saying Jost needs his own talk show. I don't get it. The jokes were so mild and the timing was too slow and very awkward.

As a sound guy, it always bothers me that don’t hang any (or enough) crowd microphones when producing this event. You only pick up the audience reactions from the host mic, and it just makes the event sound rather dead, or that the host isn’t getting any laughs. Yeah, I know it’s not a comedy special, but Colin was getting a much more positive response than it sounds like here. And every year, for that matter.

I used to do hotel AV conference tech setups for a national company 35+ years ago. Placing microphones on the ceiling was a very expensive option. Then the fancier hotel conference rooms started installing speakers and microphones in the walls and ceilings in discreet housings matching the decor. You still have to rent that system, and amplifiers, mixers, etc. The cost of the equipment, tech, and final recording copies even back then was pretty significant cost. I'm guessing they opted to focus on the speech content and keeping costs down. But you're not wrong.

Good take on the room acoustics. I don’t think anyone in the room wants to be caught on a “hot mic.” Although, I would have laughed at Lara Trump’s comments on all the trump jokes. She made a video of herself twirling around her hotel room, thinking this dinner was at MarALargo. Scarlet’s husband did a great job, I’m sure Doug would agree.

Colin Jost is a brilliant satirical comedian who pauses after every comment to let the satire sink in. Unfortunately, most in that room can't relate to satirical humor; he's too smart for them.
