It was my 7th year of grade school where I had a science teacher who tested us (his students) on the scientific method after lengthy lessons on the subject. It has stuck with me my entire life. This subject was revisited again in our ninth grade science class, just to be sure we got it the first time. That lesson is lost I think in public schools these days.

Not just that. In some school districts, and in some cases whole states, certain science is omitted purposely. And in others as well as those same ones, they've managed to put creationism on the same plane as science.

@@gryjffrs We're on a slippery slope... A hundred (probably sooner) years from now, Chrisitanity is going to be as extreme in some places as the Islamic interpretation of the Taliban. And America is making huge steps at being the catalyst in that process. The conservatives in America are really starting to get extreme. And not because of faith, but because of "the science" that is hurting their wallets. We are in a fase where there are drastic steps being made and planned because of climate change. Debunking and discrediting everything "science" works for them, and keeps them rich. Religion is just one of the sticks they are hitting with, and that stick is getting bigger and bigger.

@@gryjffrs Absolutely. Many of those states are in the South and Midwest. Many students go to religious school where evolution is never mentioned or creationism is taught as if it were legitimate science. Even in the public schools evolution is sometimes omitted entirely, is taught poorly, or is placed at the end of textbooks where the class is unlikely to get to it before the end of the semester. College-trained teachers or even some professors are afraid to mention evolution or are compelled to lie about it for fear of losing their jobs. Rational foreigners must be gasping in horror at such an enormous attack on reason in a supposedly modern nation.

The Arkansas school I attended until I joined the navy definitely taught the scientific method as well as the accepted facts of the time. One of the precepts I took away from school was to question everything. Tyson is a light in the darkness of today.

I grew up Methodist. Everything is done a certain way in that religion and there are tenets that are taught and adhered to by the governing board of the church in terms of what is accepted and taught in the church. We had a pastor in my church that was there from the time I was about 9 until I was about 15. The first thing he did was sit down with the youth and tell us to always ask questions and seek our own answers, and not to believe things just because our parents told us to, or our teachers told us to, or because a pastor told us to. He literally said, “if you are only a Christian because your parents told you that you are, then you’re doing yourself a disservice.”

Being able to explain astrophysics to non-physicists was one of the things that made Carl Sagan such a great physicist -- not just how much he knew. Niel is one of the few who has topped even Carl Sagan with both his knowledge and his neighborly screen presence. I hope we get to see more guests like Niel DeGrasse Tyson in the future -- and it would be great for him to come back and talk about the latest discoveries in science. The James Webb telescope is one of humanity's greatest achievements. We need to hear more about it!

Humanity has never been good at looking at itself and admitting we're not perfect. Or that what we believe may not be right. Thinking critically about ourselves and what we do to our fellow man is not something our race has ever been good at. The only thing I remember from my college philosophy course was not something in the curriculum, but something the professor would say on his own atleast once per class. "There are three sides to every story: The way you see it, the way I see it, and quite possibly the way it really is." One of my mentors would say there are three levels of meaning: First, My story - the story of personal anecdote. Where I've been and done and came to be. Second, Our story - the story of the group. For example, he would say that for Christians that means the story of a little Jewish people that's anecdotal for everything else. Also, that unfortunately, the group level is as far as most of us go and we tend to get lost there. We are always fighting over group things. Finally, the third level - where everything is true. That there is a meta-narrative where everything belongs. It provides context and validates the first two levels. It's where you can't be better than anyone else. He would end by saying if there is no THE story then it's all just chaos.

This man had a huge impact on my life. I quote loosely, "One of the biggest challenges in life is to know enough about a subject to think you're right but an even bigger challenge is to know enough about it too know you're wrong " A few years back I had many of my personal beliefs challenged. Lifelong core beliefs which I taught and were my career. As more and more evidence presented itself I felt completely lost and confused. I spent a few more years in that position and tried like mad to prove my findings wrong . The facts were undeniable. At the perfect time his words hit me like a ton of bricks, giving me the courage to accept the facts and the strength to let go of my false beliefs. He didn't mention it would be easy .

I for one would like to discuss the concept of the light year. 5.8 trillion miles and they have the nerve to tell us they can see beyond 3 or four without contradicting the revolutions of galaxies, and the fact that the light their raving about took 20-25 years to get here??? The universe is vast and constantly moving, how can you detect light that’s being sent from a different place than when it was sent out??? Stationary is not a blanket concept when you talk about cosmic entities that far apart and constantly moving. 🤔🤔🤔🤔😲😲😲😲🤔🤔🤔

@@derrickbailey5167 that's a good question. It's the same concept as if you were a quarterback running and threw a football. The ball will reach its target in the trajectory from which you threw it even though you are no longer where you were when you threw it. The target player is our eyes/ monitoring instrument. The football would be the photon or particle of light moving through space. But, you are correct in that the object giving off light itself, or the quarterback, is indeed no longer truly where we are pointing when the photon was initially thrown.

Interesting and spot-on description of how science is taught in schools. History classes can (have been) the same thing: "Here's a book, it tells you when and where things happened, and who did them ... test on Monday!" But that's not "history"! My high school history prof made us determine WHY things happened - the local and regional EVENTS - and how they AFFECTED various social/political entities, and nudged them into certain ACTIONS. Carl Sagan wasn't ignored. The folks that could recognize the truths he was offering listened and remembered. The folks that heard what he had to say and realized it posed a financial threat to their way of life, or profit driven motives also heard and remembered what he had said and knew it to be true. They then set out to convert all those in between to believe it was untrue. Sagan wasn't ignored, he was just not heard first hand by enough of the population.

One of my physics professors when I was an undergrad used to wheel these little demonstration experiments in to the front of the classroom and then proceed to try and make them work to demonstrate a concept. Often something went wrong, and thereby forced us to think about what SHOULD happen if physics really followed the laws that we had learned (conservation of energy and momentum, forces and counterforces, etc. - it was a freshman level mechanics class). I think sometimes he made sure he did something wrong to encourage us to think about what we had learned and what it SHOULD have done, and why. By halfway through the lecture we had figured out the problem and shown him what it should do, including with the appropriate equations. You may be right about Tyson and his desire to make us think for ourselves.

He changes his explanations for his audience, so listening to him speak to someone different always means hearing him describe concepts in a new way, and that keeps it interesting. Those stars have been dying (exploding) then recollecting those gasses and metals formed inside of them back together to form new stars and planets. So in that way, the atoms that form both us and our solid planet have certainly been part of one or more stars over the history of the universe.

Neil produced a great documentary; Cosmos, A Spacetime Odyssey which I have on Blu Ray. It is a 13 part series. It is more geared towards middle and high school, but I as a senior mechanical engineer, found it fascinating. Great stuff indeed.
