Menendez corruption was incredibly blatant. He obviously never thought he'd even be investigated, after all, keeping the bribes in cash and gold in your freaking suit pocket says 'I'll never be subject to a search warrant." If a politician that's served so long is so blase about bribes, you have to wonder about those politicians who are a bit more subtle, cautious and smarter. We also have ask ourselves about the character of the people we vote for, where this man obviously feels that he's perfectly entitled to take bribes.

Here in Sweden a few decades ago, in our most horrible instance of corruption ever among the parliamentarians, the politician involved didn’t get away with it: A ranking parliamentarian used her parliamentarian debit card, instead of her private one, to pay for a chocolate bar for her kid. And it wasn’t just the regular chocolate bar, but a luxury Toblerone! She argued it was a mistake made in a stressed situation at the grocery store. Sure, sure… so many excuses… But it was nothing but a bribe to make her kid keep quiet! Although even her own party came to denounce her. And she had to tone down her political career for a few years. And she had to pay back the embezzled ≈$2 too. It isn’t known if Switzerland with their Toblerone bribes was involved in the scheme. Swedes… Swiss… Almost as confusing as Australia and Austria! But I heard you guys have a kangaroo court! Instead of a supreme court? If thats the case, that’s terrible! We tried with moose in our military 400 years ago… didn’t work out so great for us either!

I don't think so in entirety. They pay into SS like everyone else, but you can't receive that will jailed for more than 30 days I think it is. That's one chunk. FERS is the federal system they pay into and get matched. Then there's a 401k type thing. There was legislation being considered with the No Corruption Act, that I'm not sure if it passed - that would likely block the FERS payout. Interesting question for the CRS to respond to in their paper they update every year or two. If his wife isn't found guilty she could probably draw what she'd have gotten as an "innocent spouse" type thing...
