After the sad 1963 demise of the North shore line it's great to that the South Shore is still rolling along. This interurban has a bright future. I love the South Shore and has ridden it many times.its 2023 and we still have this unique rail line is great.

I still remember when the Big Orange cars went all the way to downtown South Bend. Back when I lived in South Bend, that airport was known as St. Joseph County Airport.

Iam curious. Are there any photographs of the South Shore Line running through the streets of East Chicago, Indiana, pre Indiana Toll Roads days. I seem to remember wooden trestles crossing the Grand Calumet River as a child.

I imagine that AMTAK would charge almost twice as much as the South Shore to go between SOUTH BEND and Chicago's Union Station.
@russellsharptrainvideos11 ай бұрын
Albert, Amtrak would probably charge even more than that!

@@russellsharptrainvideos I agree! At least it's a one seat ride between South Bend and the Union Station. Also you might be able to go to the Cafe Car and get a snack while enroute.

In 1970 they moved the downtown so.bend station to Washington St. Did not have to take that long ride from airport to get to bendix dr. Took first ride back in 1954 when I was 5.

Wow I never knew there was an electrified commuter rail in Indiana. It looks very run down and apocalyptic

That's because Indiana owns it. Indiana is a very anti-rail state, and barely wants to fund it. That's also why the governor cancelled Amtrak's Hoosier State.

Please explain? The equipment is fairly new, the track is well maintained and it is being double tracked. The trains run at 70 mph/

When I worked in Chicago several co-workers took the Amtrak to and from Valparaiso, about 65 miles to the southeast. Because Amtrak didn't own the tracks its trains got shuttled onto sidings because freight trains of the host lines had right of way. Sometimes it took them 3 hours to get home and be an hour late in the morning getting to work. They all drove to the South Shore Line 13 miles to the north to have normal commute times. @@stereoplayers

Russ, that track leads to the former South shore Line (Now Amtrak) station on Bendix Drive. It is used occasionally by South Shore freights. I do not think it connects to NS?
@georgeadams18537 ай бұрын
I think there used to be a crossover between the two a short distance to the west of the current Amtrak station, in the early '60s.
@Robbi4967 ай бұрын
The current Amtrak station was built by the South Shore in 1970. I rode it in 1971 and there was no connection at that point?

There are plans to relocate the tracks to the western edge of the airport, avoiding the slow circuitous route and saving about 10 minutes. I saw somewhere that construction could begin as early as the end of this year
