I make a See-Thru Starter and Film it with the high-speed camera so we can better understand how a starter works. Every car and truck on the planet has a starter motor to start their engine but I've never seen inside of one until now.
In this See Through Starter, we can see exactly how each component works and what it does to start your car's engine every day and it was very interesting to see all the parts work in perfect harmony.
I also replicate what the starter gear does when you try and start your car when the engine is already running to see what exactly causes that crazy grinding noise.
This starter was from the Kohler Diesel
3D Printers I used to print the transparent parts: bit.ly/Warped-...

Came here to say just that. I imagine the torque is down quite a bit without the flux concentrating through the case. On top of which I bet the ground is not passing enough current either.

@WarpedYT 7 күн бұрын
Yeah I meant to talk about that in the part in the video where I mentioned about the transparent plastic case and the ground, but I forgot and I didn't think it would make that much of a difference, it made a huge difference. I'm positive if I would have pulled the injectors out of the diesel it would have still spun it but that was way too much work as you could imagine. The magnetic flux is definitely a cool subject, magnetism in general is very mesmerizing.

Great video. When I first saw the thumbnail I asked myself "can that work?" and while you where building I figured the plastic wouldn't be able to handle the torque of the starter. Dads a mechanic. I know the power of a starter motor and how important it is to have them securely bolted in. Have changed a few myself. Sadly plastic is plastic and metal is metal. Worth trying. Cool to watch. @WarpedYT Hi, older starters didn't have the gearing, and they really did kick when started. When I bought a recon 😅 starter for my now 30yr. old VW Golf, the test label stated it was 5000 Watts, at 12volts thats over 400 amps. To put that in perspective, an average household cooling fan is around 50 Watts, around 1/5 amp. at 240V UK supply.👍

Uncle Tony’s Garage claims the problems when converting carburetor to fuel injection,come from the fact that the mixture doesn’t get heat as it expands while traveling thru the plenum,towards the cylinders. It would be nice to see the actual effect that temperature has on both a conventional intake plenum vs one fitted with a transversal tube carrying hot water through the plenum. Maybe an electric coil heater,such as the Diesel engine’s intake. Great video. Keep’em coming!

You did a very nice job with the form labs printing, that end cap looks like Plexiglass though LOL which is still the same material more or less.. I give you a lot of credit, lot of skill to get the fit so good. Learned something myself which I never thought about, most ALL of the torque when starting the motor is pushing against the top of the housing where it snapped off and of course a diesel engine has enormous compression.

Not all starters are the same design. What you were thinking in the beginning is true. take a old VW bug starter, they use a Bendix design, the spinning motor pushes the starter gear out not a solenoid and there are no planetary gears either. much simpler. But as ICE motors got larger so did the requirement for the starter. Thank you for sharing with us, so cool seeing the clear build.

That was totally awesome. I am not a mechanic but I have a good unstanding of most mechanical aspects of my cars. I thought the little starter gear that engages the ring gear of the flywheel was called the bendix. I didn't hear you refer to it as that. So it is the release of the key, or the button in todays cars the de-energized the solenoid and allows the bendix to return to its home position after getting the flywheel going. When the flywheel reaches a certain speed the engine begins to move on its own. Decades ago that was hand cranked like the starter cord on a lawn mower.

Fantastic Great ! i repaired a Toyota starter once, just at the electromagnet DC Connector, and cutted a piece of copper coin and soldered it on place, as this was very teared- it´s almost same load you will have when you weld, with electrodes ,and you can turn + and minus ,you will notice electrode on + you burn more into the material, and wit electrode on minus, you burn more electrode,and less into the material . Thanks for Great Video !

I used to recondition these starter motors. This is a Bosch gear reduction type, not all have gears inside some are more simple. If you want you can take the gear apart that engages with the flywheel, it's called "the drive" it has a one way clutch inside it and rollers + springs and grease properly about 12/15 parts inside the drive, the factory used to have a drive room were 3/4 people rebuilt hundreds of them every day! The solenoid cap will push off if you push inside the big hole. Also the solenoid has 2 coils inside. 1 called the pulling the other called the holding. There is also a big piece of copper inside the solenoid cap, this is the switch to make the motor move.

@MikkoRantalainen
@MikkoRantalainen 4 күн бұрын
Great work demonstrating this kind of old school starter. The ingenious part of this design is that if the gears do not mesh, the starter motor will not be connected to electric power at all. All the spinning of the pinion gear is just springs inside the mechanism that gets pushed by the solenoid. Some pinion gears have some kind of forced release mechanism in case the solenoid hangs while in starting position. If the pinion doesn't release, the engine will spin starter motor too fast and the coils in the anchor will be thrown away by high g-forces. That will typically destroy the starter and may take the teeth from the flywheel, too. I think the video would have been more interesting if you had included info about what can go wrong and what happens then. The most common failure mode for the solenoid is facture in the fork that tries to connect the solenoid to the pinion because the spring in pinion is supposed to pull the solenoid away from the contacts.

the real damage while starting a re starting an engine whilst engine is still spinning is the flywheel's ring gear teeth will round and wear first as it IS a softer metal(teeth)(less soft than the starter's teeth)
@WarpedYT
