The B-52s are hardly ever flown. THAT's why they are still around. They have a fraction of the hours of an airliner, for instance. The oldest B-52 has around 22,000 hours. We have much younger 757s going past 100,000 hours.

My Dad flew B-17s in WWII, then B-36s, and then B-52s. As an O5 and O6, on 52s he flew the Polar Express.... out of Ellsworth & Malmstrom, over the Artic Circle, down and up the coastline of USSR, then back over the north pole to home base. So many amazing stories... I miss my Dad.

@Leadfoot_P71 there is 1 bunk located on the upper deck below the left load bank circuit breaker panels. Food is usually box lunches from the in-flight kitchen who also provided jugs of water and coffee. There was a plug in hot cup heater and a plug in oven to heat food but these weren't used much when I was in the USAF. Some crew heated foil wrapped food on the cabin heater ducts which used bleed air from the engines. We didn't have female crew in the 1980s and the restroom facilities were a urinal that was on the lower deck just above the entrance hatch. It was a tube about the diameter of a 5 LB coffee can and about 3 feet tall. It was strapped to the rear bulkhead and was removed and dumped out behind the handstand where the plane was parked. There was a camp style toilet on the upper deck behind the EWO for other restroom needs but I never saw it used as the rule was regardless of your rank, if you use it, you clean it In short, the bomber was designed to complete the mission, not for crew comfort. I'm 6'2" and during a long flight, the only way to stretch your legs was to stand on the lower deck, right above the entry hatch in the ladderway that goes to the upper deck.

B52s are part of my core memories as a child. I'm an Air Force brat. My dad was a 52 flight engineer during Vietnam. I toured the flight deck and bomb bay area of a 52 and even sat in one of the engine intakes with my little brother during an Armed Services Day event in the 1970s. Lived in NoDakota where my bf’s dad was stationed at Minot AFB. Went to Northern Neighbors Day where the base was open for air shows several times. Seeing BUFF on the ground was impressive but watching one take off it seemed like it was in slow motion. Would see them often flying low level penetration training missions over the badlands and a training range nearby. Always glad they were ours. Awesome.

The US did try with the B-1 Lancer but that was quickly retired due to heavy maintenance. Making a new B-52 would be extremely expensive and difficult since the USAF prefers quick low altitude bombing and high altitude precision bombing. The reason why the B-52 is still in service is because it’s a good platform for carpet bombing and also the only bomber to have an on-board jammer in its tail where the tail gunner used to be while being easy to maintain with modern equipment.

In the old Squadron Signal _in Action_ series I read about a B-52D that took off from Guam for the Linebacker II Operations, lost all four engines from the same side, jettisoned everything he could and was able to return for a safe landing, keeping the flaps up. Amazing.

I always love these calm situations. I used to get admonished at work by Gen-X supervisors because I wouldn't get dramatic when a problem popped up. Sh!t happens, I'd just take stock of the situation and fix it or get it fixed, that's part of the job. What's the use in getting dramatic about it? Thankfully I'm retired.

B52 is a sitting duck in modern warfare. Russia and China can see its take off in Louisiana, its mid-air refueling over Hawaii, its fighter escort in Japan etc. etc. China has just deployed a super long range (2500+ km) missile to shoot down satellites, B21, air tankers, AWACS etc. Then there is the J20 with 250KM range PL15 AAM. Why? Why? Why?

The Afghans never committed to their country, no matter how much training they were getting, but the Taliban did. It didn't work for the Russians either in the 1980s. Ukraine was unexpected, and no one in Western Europe wanted to get into a NATO conflict over it. Remember what happened when a Serb shot an Austrio-Hungarian prince in 1914 and everyone started upholding their alliances? That didn't end well for Europe.

The hypersonic missiles are better against static defenses/emplacements a B-52 in the air is obviously always on the move. It can also fly closer to the ground/water to avoid radar systems which point upward at the sky (obviously) to detect aircraft or airborne weapons.
