The water probably never turned clear. If it was really a 30 year old damn, the amount of silt and mud that would be released is insane. So by the time the water upstream equals the water diwnstream, there's still be muddy water flowing, or the engineers shut the gate

30 years, this cant be possible. Plus this isnt the spillway. These are called flushing gates, they're meant to flush out the sludge, silt and debris from the lower ends of the water so that these things dont into the intake tunnel and then through the power generating units, as these things can cause damage to the rotors of the units. Ive worked at the powerhouse of a dam btw.

Ok, so I have watched this video numerous times. I just can't stop thinking about the pressure equalization that was happening here ! It appears that the dam had a square inlet and outlet. If so it makes me wonder if the underwater side was covered by a grate ? Or just the opening unimpeded ? If it was either..... anything near that intake would have been torn apart and completely dissipated. The pressure must have been amazing. I'm sure this video is nothing compared to being the person on that deck recording ! TY for the video !

Just a little sediment build-up. That sediment can make a positive difference downstream if trapped and controlled. Dams trap sediment. Dams lose water storage due to displacement by sediment build-up. Periodic flushing is good for dams and would be better if the sediment outflow was controlled and put to use. This could help stop the loss of high quality dirt to the oceans and improve farmland. Is there cost involved? Yes! Is there also a cost in not doing this?
@amitbetkeri56052 жыл бұрын
Its neither shit nor dirt. It is silt which is very rich in water and micro organisms which can be very nourishing to crops if used in farmland.

I just yesterday watched a video of a spillway being opened after 15 years. Similar effect, but not the same dam. Does this sort of thing happen often?
@campagnollo9 ай бұрын
It depends on dam maintenance. There is sediment in the water that accumulates behind the dam over time. A well maintained dam will open their floodgates a few times a year to flush out the trapped sediment. But I guess in some other locations they don't do that, leaving a big pile of sludge oozing out when the gate is opened after a long period of time. If you want another example of sediment buildup behind a dam, lookup Condit Dam drain down. It was a 100 year old dam slated for demolition. As the water was going down, you can see the sediment collapsing.

@@diegofianza3525 Yes, the sludge is largely, depending on location, part-decomposed vegetive material. So, ready to use up any oxygen to continue the process. In too-large quantities, it can strip the available oxygen out and kills off the oxygen-dependent life. Done properly, as you say, the effect is beneficial.
