One of best pieces in the Marimba repertoire. Thank you Vic Firth for producing this video!! And congratulations Paul Fadoul for memorizing this highly elusive work! Steven Mackey truly understands the instrument and how it speaks. I am forever fascinated by his treatment of motivic material and how he developed such simple ideas in the most sophisticated ways. Furthermore, as I listen I am taken on journey filled with a beautiful panorama of emotions, imagery, and texture.

5 mins in so far... I don't see the appeal in this type of music. It seems so abstract (so far) without chord progressions, meaningful phrases, a melody... I just don't get it :/

Didn't get any better by the end. I guess I just don't like this type of marimba literature.

Perhaps you should strive to understand music before passing judgement, you may find your enjoyment increases. Instead of saying "its just not for me", "I just don't understand at this point in my life" is much more meaningful. Sometimes the greatest flavor must be squired over time, and I swear to you that even though this piece doesn't have traditional style there is still much to enjoy.

I will say that to be sure, it certainly could be described as an acquired taste, but so are so many great things. That said there definitely are chord changes, meaningful phrases, and melodies. If you look into it, the whole piece is basically a theme and variations, with the theme being just the two notes that keep getting played in the left hand while a bunch of different keys and melodies get implied over it.
