--------------------------
ABOUT THE PIECE:
The Process of Invention was written by Christopher Deane specifically for Mark Ford as a contrasting piece to Three Shells. The form is transparent in its use of repetition. Utilizing the concept of “one thing leads to another,” each left hand bass line is connected by shared beginnings and endings in juxtaposition with contrapuntal lines in the right hand. Augmentation and diminution of one musical line, while keeping its counter line constant, serves as a development device.
ABOUT THE PERFORMER:
A native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Timothy Feerst is Adjunct Lecturer of Percussion at the University of Texas at Tyler, where he teaches Applied Lessons in Percussion, Percussion Ensemble, and Percussion Methods. He is also an Adjunct Instructor of Percussion at Trinity Valley Community College, where he teaches Applied Percussion Lessons and teaches Percussion Ensemble/Sectionals. Prior joining UT Tyler and Trinity, he served on the faculties at the University of Utah and at North Central Texas College. Dr. Feerst holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance from the University of North Texas. At UNT, he was a Graduate Teaching Fellow, teaching courses in Applied Percussion and Percussion Methods, as well as conducting the UNT Percussion Group. He also holds a Master’s in Percussion Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor’s in Music Education from George Mason University. His teachers include Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Paul Rennick, Ed Soph, Ed Smith, Michael Drake, José Aponte, Thomas Teasley, Thomas Burritt, Tony Edwards, John Kilkenny, and John Spirtas.
Dr. Feerst is an advocate for new works for percussion and has commissioned, premiered, and participated in a number of consortiums for music by composers such as Gene Koshinski, Corey Robinson, Jenna Wright, James Wood, Brett William Dietz, Nathan Daughtrey, Marc Mellits, Alejandro Viñao, Ivan Trevino, and Joe W. Moore III.
Active in the Percussive Arts Society (PAS), Dr. Feerst has been published in Percussive Notes, the official research journal of PAS, and served on the PAS Contest and Audition Procedures Committee. He has also made writing contributions to the percussion education website, DrumChattr.com. Additional professional memberships include the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and the College Music Society (CMS).

I played this piece for my masters recital. I learned the entire thing over the covid lockdown. Playing a piece had never been so rewarding - marrying the machination of the structure and execution with shaping and interpretations which gave it humanity and life...endlessly fun. I used this recording as my foundation and referenced it constantly. I still come back to it every once in a while.

Such an absolutely lovely performance. There's no piece in our repertoire that has the kind of beauty this piece carries when performed this well.
