Great video Janey but were you going to tell us what seeds you started.

Adding a light layer of vermiculite to the soil is a game changer. It helps retain moisture and prevents dampening off, which will kill your seedlings.

When the seedlings are up and second and third leaves are appearing I place a fan several feet away on lowest cycle,to get air moving around the seedlings. This develops a stronger stem. I don’t know if there is a scientific reason to this habit but I also move my trays around every week or two and not sure why but they seem to do better.

I have to be honest Janey, I’m not convinced there is any savings, however the variety, the joy you get from watching the success, and for me the delight of sharing what I grow with my friends and family is well worth what I grow…I have ordered seeds 4 times this year, and bought seed trays, and last year I bought lights and a rack… But I LOVE IT! And recommend anyone to try it! So satisfying! Thank you!
@patriciacole87738 күн бұрын
The savings may be in the numbers of plants per tray. Even accounting for some losses🤷🏼♀️

I spend so much money on seeds, I can see what you are saying for the cost! But think how much money it would cost to purchase 10 sunflower plants at the garden center vs. 1 bag of seeds! (At least that is what I tell myself 😆)

Thank you for the tutorial! I always get nervous starting seeds, think it's my personality 😅, worried I'll do something wrong but it's so worth it! I grew marigolds, lots of veggies, and salad greens last year- even pie pumpkins! It's definitely a saving when needing more plants on a budget. Doing the same this year but adding herbs, perennials, and annuals like coleus, alyssum, and geraniums for my containers 😊

Janey, I found your channel when looking for a greenhouse to buy and how to build the foundation. Odd place to start but hey here I am and enjoy ya'lls videos! I started a bunch of foxgloves using Johnny's seed December 10. They germinated in about 10 to 15 days inside by a window as expected. However, since January 1 they don't seem to have grown very much and I purchased a grow light for them to sit under around January 20th. I'm kind of at a loss as to why they aren't growing very much as they are getting watered from underneath and lightly misted using a spray bottle very regularly. Any tips would be welcomed. Thanks again! Hunter in the Huntsville AL zone 7b/8a

I've done the winter sow in milk jugs and they're already sprouting so no hardening off needed ! Not sure if they'll outgrow their containers before time to plant out in the garden, never done this before but will have to figure it out.

When hardening off do you uncover them or leave them covered when placing them outdoors?
@sheilastromberger22758 күн бұрын
Take the humidity dome (or whatever you’re covering them with) off as soon as the majority of the seeds have germinated and don’t put it on again.
@DigPlantWaterRepeat8 күн бұрын
What Sheila said... Only cover them for the first week or so after sowing them. Then the cover comes off for the rest of the time.

I’ve been having issues with my seedling with nutrient deficiency. Even when they are very small i noticed they have purple or reddish tones( I’m guessing phosphorus deficiency) . I fertilized with an organic water sol fertilizer with no change. I then used proven winners water sol fert with only some improvement. When I see seed starting videos everyone’s seedlings look so healthy. Does anyone else have this issue?
@jennaleigh60498 күн бұрын
Honey .. I'm not sure that's a thing... For one seeds start with all the nutrients they need to get going at least a few sets of leaves and then after that most plants need such a small amount of phos that it's so extremely unlikely. It could likely be that you have hard water and that can cause multiple physical abnormalities mostly spotyness like a residue
@marleneegan-hm7lr8 күн бұрын
@ I do have hard water but I’ve been watering from the bottom. Trust me when I say the leaves are purple aroind the edges. My milkweed definitely red where it shouldn’t be. I’m wondering if It’s because I used a good light potting mix( laura recommended it) Maybe seed starting mix would have been better after all.
@jennaleigh60498 күн бұрын
@@marleneegan-hm7lr so bottom watering would prevent the spots but it wouldn't necessarily prevent abortion of the minerals that make it hard water, is it possible that they're too close to a cold window? What type of grow light do you have?
@marleneegan-hm7lr8 күн бұрын
@@jennaleigh6049 next to a window ( not too cold I’m in Houston and I close the warm shade at night. ) I am using a gardeners supply grow light, which seems to give plenty of light, most of the seeds germinated quite well. Do you think I should use bottled or distilled water?
@jennaleigh60498 күн бұрын
@marleneegan-hm7lr I think it would be worth it to try different water as a test group. I'm not really sure what else it could be because I've grown plants in sand mixed with three year old recycled potting mix and not had a problem with nutrients.. they need such little phosphorus it's hard for me to believe that fresh potting soil of any kind doesn't have enough. I was thinking maybe they don't have the right frequency of light that if they're literal grow lights I don't see how that would be it either.

If you want fast germination then heat is your answer! Put them on a heat mat or the top of your fridge! Have fun at Disney!!
