Good on Owen taking an interest in the profession. My grandson didn't want anything to do with farming. He thought it was stupid. He and his dad would go round and about it, till his senior year. Then something switched on in him. He really enjoys it and learning a lot.

So true, when we're young and up close day to day with a lifestyle like this, you really don't have anything to compare it to. So wonderful to hear George speak well of Owen. He really seems like a good kid and as he grows up he will hopefully take over this operation. I tell ya these videos are gems. You Gierok kids will look back at these vids as home movies. All the kids and their gals seem like good folk, testimony to Ma and Pa Gierok.

The Great Plains drill looks like a very versatile machine. The cover crops ought to help in the heavier ground with more corn in the rotation. You've been a good teacher to your sons. Learning by doing gives you experience in the good/bad/and sometimes ugly side of real world farming.

NoTilling Cover Crops is probably the best for the soil. Really slows down erosion after the crop gets up, and scavenges any extra nutrients before they get out of the root zone. Great video!

I like those pressure wheels on the back of each planter row. We had a 12 foot John Deere press drill that head a 36 inch steel wheel in back of each planter row. Most people got around 75 bushel per acre on oats, we got 100 bushel per acre on oats and my dad always credited it to the John Deere press drill. In all the years I’ve been watching KZbin videos, I’ve only seen one of those drills.

Those were some interesting looking machines to an Eastern farmer. I thought they were mainly for the upper mid west, dryland wheat farms.

When I was young, Dad bought the neighbors fairly new International 12' grain drill at their auction. The first time I used it, I was seeding down 20 acres of oats/peas (forage) & alfalfa/grass mix. I looked at the chart on the drill and it said how much to seed per acre. What it did not say is whether to use the left side or right side of the lever and the number "grid". After several rounds, most of the grass seed was gone! We found out later that I used the wrong side of the lever to line up with the numbers. We planted twice the rate of seed. Dad wasn't mad. He got more seed and planted the whole field that way. It was before grass seed prices were completely ridiculous. We had the best thickest hay on those fields for 8+ years. It was well fertilized because it was pasture for probably 20 years before that.

I broadcast and then rake/harrow to dirty up the rye seed and give it ground contact. If I only broadcast then a huge flock of turkeys and cranes show up to glean the field clean! I added Dutch clover and buckwheat to my rye, winter will knock out the buckwheat. I'm also testing Einkorn on a small plot and it sprouted fast.

A neighbor got a new Land Pride 1006NT earlier this year, it's painted orange but looks very similar to yours. Looks like yours has a few additional options. I used it earlier this week to no-till winter oats after we took Sorghum-Sudan grass off as baleage. Haven't tried Fall Seeding Oats before, excited to see how it turns out. As you stated it's important to check your planting rate. I had the drill setup for 100 pounds/acre and was actually drilling closer to 150 pounds after I had gotten going and checked. Seems to be a nice machine, just is really wide towing down the highway need to pay attention!

Great video, I bought a 12 foot Esch drill last year and have been overseeding my grass fields with it. I assume you are planting Italian ryegrass? Do you ever feed it to your milk cows rather than tilling it under?
