These machines have come a long way over the years, I used to own an old Victorian machine that was in effect a 'broadcaster' it was operated by a violin bow if you like, made of wood the farmer would wear the massive seed hopper that had an adjustable dispenser at the bottom releasing seed on to a centrifuge wheel spun by the bowing action of the farmer, made by Ransomes it revolutionized the planting of wheat & barley back in the day. I can't imagine the effort expended by the poor farmer that had to walk the fields with that machine & I think the proud boast was that you could plant 10 acres a day with this contraption strapped to your back, man that must have been hard & watching the birds following your path pecking away at your work must have been especially galling! All this after you had plowed/ harrowed your fields with horse-drawn implements, it must have been an exhausting experience! When you have the time Nick you might like to show some early examples of machinery & show how much things have changed. The agricultural advancements have been amazing over the years & you now feed the world & not just a village. God bless you & your family Nick & all the farming communities.

Last time I planted corn or peas or beans was with a John Deere planter the was chain driven, plates for different seed and the seed bins had a plate that sat on seed and had a rod that wheat thru the lid and would slowly went down as you planted. But you wouldn't know there was a problem for at least a mile or so before you could tell the one wasn't going down as much as the others. Was back in the good old days like 1973. No hydro's, tripped it to go down and start planting and tripped it again to raise up and stop. Man things have changed.

I ceretainly don't want my drills cross talking! No electronics, they're acoustic! The sophistication of the equipment is just staggering. And I imagine that today's equipment, within a short time, becomes outdated as improvements and advancements are brought to market. Which brings me to my question Nick: when hauling in the fields with your decades old Big Brute tractors/tech, (not withstanding your intense and rigorous maintenance routine) what are you giving up by not using a new(er) $500,000 + -tractor with all the bells and whistles? Clearly, you make this m/o work for Welker Farms. I know you have mentioned fuel economy but there must be more. I, and I'm sure others, would be very interested in your thoughts. Great vid and thx!

Excellent question. I guess I would say we are missing out on: comfort(super nice cabs), integrated GPS, increased hydraulic capacity, top road speed, visibility, happier epa, really nice powershift transmissions, lots of electronic bells and whistles... Late but: Air and seed takes the shortest path so if you loose/break/blow a hose, more product will go through that line and register as more than the rest, either making it look like the rest are getting shorted or that one is getting alot more.
