Just setting the studio up for drawing/painting. Your honed instincts are so inherent - your method you explain clearly, and as always, I see your drawing and smile... thank you. 💐

Drawing before painting is really helpful. Whether from photos or still life either inside or outside, drawing first does help us see where the shapes are and also helps with color. This is a great video. Thank you so much and all the best.

I sketched this scene out when you posted this months ago. Learned a lot back then and again. The sketch is framed and in a hallway- it serves as a reminder to create more. Thank you!

@@IanRobertsMasteringComposition Thanks, I'm trying to bring some of my photos to life, but not as easy when the shades and strokes are not determined for us as are shown on your process. It will take time to master!

Thank you, Ian. I looked for the Blackwing matte pencils online but the only ones I found seem to have regular, round tips. Yours seem to have a flat tip do you get those broad strokes that cover the surface more quickly. Can you share where to buy those? Or is there a special way you sharpen them to get that flat, chiseled tip (like a carpenter’s pencil)? Thank you!

HI Sara, I sharpen the Blackwing Matte pencils with a sharp utility knife so the exposed lead is a bit longer than you would get it if you just used a normal pencil sharpener. Still pointed. Then I hold the pencil as I would for drawing and drag it back and forth on a really fine sand paper, say 350 grit. (You can just do this on a piece of paper it just takes a bit longer) Then just a few passes on a piece of normal paper and that creates the chiselled edge I use. The trick is to not be twisting and turning your wrist once you find that thick mark on the page or it will be impossible to build a flat mass of value on the page. You move the wrist back and forth, just not twisting it at the same time. Takes some practice but is not rocket science. Good luck.
