When I had my kitchen floor redone, the flooring contractor realized that the old tile had asbestos (age of home, 9” x 9” tile size). He first installed cement board over it and then laid ceramic tile. He chose the third option you mentioned. The information you provide is very valuable! Thank you, Leah!!

@@seejanedrill Does all black adhesive under vinyl tiles contain asbestos? My house was built in 1994 and the tiles are 12x12inches. Some say not all black adhesives contain asbestos...and since it is a 1994 home, what to think?

In the 70s, my parents wanted to remove the tile in the kitchen, dining, and living rooms that had been laid over the original hardwood floors. We took it up ourselves, using a hairdryer to heat up and scrape off the very sticky black adhesive. I’m in my 50s and had no idea that was mastic with asbestos we were working with as children until I watched your video. This is such important information. Thank you, Leah.

Oh crap, I just remembered that when I was about 14 my dad had me remove the tile floor in our bathroom. My vague memory of that has "black stuff" under the tile. That house was built circa 1965.

Also consider that if chipped and you want to cover you'll have voids under new floor. You can wet the chipped pieces to prevent particles from becoming airborne. Remove. Wear a mask. Cover chipped floor with leveling compound. Lay new floor. I was told by local professionals a small amount of exposure while not good is not as dangerous as workers exposed daily. Take some precautions and you'll be fine if you're a diy person doing it once or twice in your lifetime. Only take risks you're comfortable taking.

Hang on to grandparents' house if feasible and carry on w modernizing as you see fit. Odds are in your favor that it is of better construction quality than anything you can find now. 💚

It's no wonder I have COPD, I worked for hours on my hands and knees scraping up an old tile floor with the black mastic underneath. It was about a 90 degree day, I was then 20 and I spent the entire day prying up that old flooring with no mask. That was over 40 years ago and no one knew about asbestos being present in this material. I also worked with hydrochloric acid that I used for etching magnesium plates in the rubber stamp making process. My boss died of ALS at 65. I am now 67 so, who knows how long I have. People are much more aware now of the dangers surrounding us. Make sure you listen to these warnings, at least you have them now as we didn't back then,

5:13 I liked Leah's channel from the first, but this very level-headed explanation that asbestos tile isn't dangerous unless you do something to it that puts asbestos into the air made me a super fan. Not often you find an online personality with the courage and integrity to counter the fear mongers. BTW ripping it up will definitely be something that puts the asbestos into the air.

My parents has those tiles in the basement. We lived in a poorer neighborhood and dealt and deal with basement flooding that is lifting those tiles up. Its frustrating for reasons, but the knowledge is there.

Our home was built in 1945 and we're positive the upstairs tiles we covered up were asbestos. We pulled the carpet noticed that none of them were cracked, so we put the underlayment and the vinyl plank right over the top. I found ours in the links you provided. Thanks for the video 🤟🏻

Great video as always, Leah. There's been asbestos everywhere in my family's old house and cottage. Tiles, siding, etc (even the old outhouse had the same siding). People usually freak out when they hear "asbestos" it or uncover some. Good on you trying to get the word out there about the different forms it can come in, and how to properly deal with it!

I used to test materials that were suspected asbestos, floor tile being a common one. Yes, asbestos is dangerous to breath, but non-friable material like floor tile rarely releases enough fiber, even with breakage from removal, to be cause for concern at all.

I highly doubt you will have any problems. With asbestos, long term contact is key. Just like you wouldn't want to breath in fiberglass for decades. Good Luck!

Who knew anything about this. I grew up in a house built before the 80's. Wow very very helpful. In my house(parents) where they lived now and me and my brother own together newer built, which I'm moving soon, Me and my brother had put down those vinyl "wood" interlocking planks. Love them! Leah, my house was built in 1936. I'm pretty sure my walls are made from lead, dinosaur bones, asbestos and radioactive isotopes. It would be a relief to even just have this kind of project.

I've been watching your videos for a while now and the information and instruction you give is priceless. Hi Leah- I am a GC and you seem to know all of my tricks! I have turned several of my clients on to this video about asbestos tiles - they did not believe me! There is a kit available for asbestos and lead paint as well, which I carry in my truck at all times. Keep up the good work - you make a lot of folks realize that our job is not easy! Have a house built in '72. I was getting ready to start ripping out the sheet vinyl and then I saw this video. Earlier I had noticed that in the kitchen they had laid new sheet vinyl over this stuff so in my half project, I am going to lay LVP over it to encapsulate it.

Thank you for sharing some good info to help homeowners as well as potential buyers who are considering an older home. There are many benefits to old houses. They often have charm and character that is difficult if not impossible to replicate today. They were often very well built by skilled craftsmen, and the fact a home may my well over a century old and still standing proud, highlights the pride and workmanship that was taken. But they can also hide dangerous surprises. Lead pipes, lead based paint, obsolete and unsafe electrical panels and wiring, asbestos in various places especially hazardous if deteriorated, among other areas than can need attention, if the home is to be a sound investment.

The house I grew up in, still has the tile you showed in your video, All throughout the entire concrete slab house. It also had radiant heat under the floor. So those tiles would get good and hot, we would melt crayons and make things out of them in the spots where the floor had “hot spots”. Fast forward to today. My sister owns that home now. The house now has forced heat and the pipes under (in the slab) have been drained but the holes in the floor remain where they came up and connected to the boiler. What a mess to have to deal with this floor! It’s chipped around that old boiler and In every room. House was built in 1946. Love your channel. Thank you for this video.

Thanks for that one Leah! I did buy all tiles put in my pantry and kitchen a few years ago... Armstrong EXCELON IN MY EFFORT AT MOCKING A MORE EXPENSIVE LARGER LINOLEUM TILE and rollout material used in expensive new build homes. I did not see mention of asbestos and believe I'm a step above the two layers of 1950s sheet vinyl and black tarish adhesive we removed.

My dad worked at the shipyard and the railroad. Both jobs required working with asbestos. He would come home from work with asbestos coming out of his nose, from breathing it. He is 80 years old this year, with no lung problems.

Yeah our church has this tile so we decided not to change the tile out. It looks very dated but it's functionally fine so when we found out it had asbestos and the price went through the roof we just decided to continue to maintain it vs remodel.

I use the 9x9 thumb rule - but I didn't know that mastic was an issue. Thanks for that info. That said, I'm guessing mastic isn't much of an issue, since it's sticky and it's not likely that any of the fibres will get airborne.

When my parents died we had building inspectors come look the house over. It being an 1820’s brick home there were amazing things they pointed out (hand-hewn posts and beams on which you could see every tool stroke and even some of the craftsmen’s fingerprints still on the wood and bricks) but they also discovered the kitchen floors had been covered with tiles that were ASBESTOS. As kids, WE PLAYED ON THAT FLOOR!!! (No one has shown any symptoms of mesothelioma and two of my siblings are in their mid 60’s and 70’s. Luckily it’s an amazingly durable floor with no damage anywhere, but of course it had to be disclosed to potential buyers. The lead paint (we also grew up with this and had no health issues) was removed by professionals a few years prior when Mom had all the rooms repainted. Thank you for posting this video and offering suggestions to keep people safe.

My first house was built around 1953. It had asbestos tiles and mastic adhesive on every floor of the house. We had to wear so many bits of protective gear to remove it and hire a special skip for disposal, it was ridiculous.

I had a house that was built in the early 40s that had asbestos siding tiles. Removing and updating them would be almost an act of Congress, so I left them. Now, I have a newer house (built in the 70s) and the bathroom floor has asbestos flooring in it. The pattern is very 70s, but its solid as a rock, so its staying for now.
