Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago
Buy or Rent the Movie: • Rocky IV: Rocky Vs. Drago
The most triumphant sports-drama franchise in history returns with a new look in "Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago." After more than 35 years, director/writer/star Sylvester Stallone has revisited and reshaped the fourth entry in the Rocky Balboa saga. The film famously pits The Italian Stallion against his most formidable opponent: Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), a towering Soviet terror who killed Rocky's friend and mentor Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the ring. "Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago" emerges as an artist's fine-tuning of a successful work, with never-before-seen footage. It is a fascinating time capsule of a moment in pop culture when entertainment echoed audiences' feelings and fears - in this case, the nuclear-fueled friction between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in the 1980s. The film delivers the knockout punch Stallone envisioned for the film, letting audiences step into the ring one more time with an iconic hero.

Actually, they're all worth watching. It also makes no sense skipping any of them as they are all interconnected and they offer several callbacks that are necessary to fully understand the Creed movies and develop more emotional attachment to the characters. I hope people hating on V and Balboa will quit advising reactors to skip the films... It's too immature and disrespectful! Give them the chance to experience everything as we all have. I personally liked ALL the films in the franchise. Maybe they would like them too as most of the other reactors did.

This movie shows how much Rocky loved Apollo. Regardless of the fact that he was retired and that at the beginning even Adriana did not believe that he could win and that he knew that there was a high possibility that this duel with Drago would be the last thing in his life, he went to Moscow and won on a foreign field against the giant who killed his best friend. Well, that means being a true friend !

As someone who loves the original and hasn’t seen the ultimate cut, this is awesome, I prefer all the little details they put back into it. I’ve seen the theatrical version so many times I can tell you every single thing that was added in and it provides so much better context to the story In my opinion than the original version did. Rocky V gets 💩 on by so many but it’s a great 90’s action flick if you remind yourself of the time in which it came out you’ll understand the cheese in it and hopefully enjoy it. I would say definitely do it even if you end up hating it at the very least I think you’ll understand why they had to make the 6th movie.

Exhibitions never seemed to go Apollo's way. The first Rocky - for Apollo - was to put on a good show, make some money, send the crowd home, and the ego was satisfied. Instead, they were both beat into a lengthy hospital stay. Rocky IV was an exhibition as well. Only this time Creed is beaten into a grave.

The debate over the Rocky statue were between art museum who saw it as art and the city's art commission who saw it as a movie prop. They compromised by moving it to the side of the museum. Others brought up the fact the city was maintaining a statue of a fictional character, yet the city's first heavyweight champion Joe Frazier wasn't recognized until after his death... As far as Apollo he was based off of Muhammad Ali.. When Ali created the rope-a-dope style, it was against George Foreman. A fight his own team was scared he'd be killed in. He would dance around and box, then retreat to the ropes and protect his head while letting Foreman tire himself out punching on his body. While this was going on Ali was messing with his head by talking to him and rallying the crowd between rounds.
@Retroholic

"Movie prop" or not it seems rather arrogant of Philadelphia's Art Commission to disrespected a fictional character that inspires hope in people and is an Icon of independence, guts, romance, and kindness.. almost like they're jealous a fake person makes them look better than they do.

I'd say Rocky 5 is underrated, but not among my favorites but still worth seeing. Rocky 6 is great! Stallone talked about his ideas for Rocky 7, but that was rejected by the powers that be to make the Creed movies and move the franchise into a different direction. Expendables is the franchise you were thinking about. Part 4 is coming out soon. You may already have been told by now, but there are 2 versions of this movie. During the early parts of the pandemic, Stallone recut this alternate version of the movie from the theatrical version, putting back some deleted scenes and taking out some other scenes he felt were more "goofy" and silly and what Stallone said made it look more like a music video. But, he did keep a lot of the music and some other stylized things. He did add some more flashback stuff for when Rocky is driving his Lamborghini, but the original theatrical version did have flashbacks too, but he decolorized some of the flashback stuff, as far as I can remember. He also changed some of the sound FX of the punches to sound more realistic and make the fights sound more intense. Though, in my opinion, the original theatrical version was pretty intense and dramatic all on its own and did not need any "punching up" (pun intended). Stallone said he wanted to remake a more dramatic version of the film that fit more seamlessly with the other Rocky films and he wants to or will plan to do the same thing for Rocky 5. In my opinion, this alternate version is more dramatic, but I would not say is better. I actually wish he had kept some of the scenes he took out of the theatrical version, even though I also liked some of the more dramatic scenes he also added back in. I still prefer the theatrical version more and would recommend you see that version at some point. LOL, I'd say Stallone probably helped get more people into the gym to start bodybuilding with just that 1 exercising montage in this movie than Schwarzenegger did in his whole bodybuilding career. This movie's soundtrack probably got replayed over and over again by every high school and college kid while in the gym. I know it is was my go-to music at the time whenever I lifted. This soundtrack is probably just as good, if not moreso, than the Top Gun soundtrack. I'd love to see you guys do a Stallone marathon and see films like the Rambo franchise, Cliffhanger, Cobra, Lockup, etc.

Thats literally rockys thoughts he's thinking about the whole of his life, the great and the sad knowing the risks of fighting Drago of losing his life and family yet still pursuing him to find the peace to calm his heart and soul. This is another one of those moments where if he doesnt fight it'll haunt him for the rest of his life like Adrienne said in 3. Without Apollo helping him as a rookie and without coaching him through Mickey's death Rocky would still be steet hustling and so he decides his friend's honor and pride is worth dying and especially fighting for.

This version of the film came about during the pandemic. Like a lot of people at the time, Stallone was stuck at home in lockdown and decided to spend the time re-editing Rocky IV himself. The original theatrical version was "very MTV" and stylized with several montages. The movie also had the very bizarre inclusion of a talking (and apparently artificially intelligent?) robot as Rocky's birthday gift to Paulie. Stallone admits that the only reason the robot was in the movie was because he saw it in an L.A. pizza restaurant and thought it was cool. Overall, the tone and style of the movie was incongruous with the rest of the series, which Stallone grew to regret in hindsight and inspired this "Director's Cut." It adds more dialogue and character scenes that were left out of the original version, and Paulie's robot is completely cut out. The tone of the ending is a bit different as well. The original cut ends feeling very triumphantly euphoric, with Rocky celebrating with the crowd after his anti-war speech as "Hearts On Fire" plays the movie out to the end credits. But Rocky is more somber and reflective about Apollo's death after he defeats Drago in this cut. And yes, the "No Easy Way Out" driving montage was in the original film and remains unchanged in this version. It's one of those MTV-styled elements of the original film that Stallone kept, but it is one of the more emotional - and iconic - aspects of the movie, so removing it likely would've made the film feel TOO different. I can also tell that Stallone might've been struggling to fill out the runtime of this cut, as the opening recap of Rocky III is much longer. The original Rocky IV only really briefly recaps the climactic second fight with Clubber Lang and the secret third fight between Rocky and Apollo. Rocky IV already had the shortest runtime of all the movies in the franchise, so he might've kept the driving montage because removing it would've cut a little too much time from the movie.

In the original "Rocky" movie, it's stated that Rocky was thirty. That would put Apollo at thirty three. Rocky III mentions Rocky being thirty four years old before the second bout with Clubber. That would put Apollo at thirty seven. Rocky IV states "nearly five years" (later) when Apollo has been retired for some time. This would put Rocky at thirty nine and Apollo at forty two years old. By contrast, this cut of Rocky IV states that Ivan Drago is "Thirteen years younger" than Rocky. That puts Ivan Drago at twenty six years of age during his match with Rocky in Moscow.

You talked about how Drago should have been charged for Apollo's death, Something like this happened in real life in boxing Ray "boom boom" Mancini was fighting a Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim, in the 15th round Mancini knocked him down, Kim took a hard landing, he got up but the ref stopped the fight. Kim collapsed in the back and had to be rushed to the hospital, he had suffered a massive cranial hemorrhage and died. Mancini wasn't charged, it was ruled an accident but he was very shaken by it, nearly retired he continued but was never the same again. Years later there was a documentary where he visited Kim's mother and apologized. He said she never blamed him cause she knew it wasn't intentional. They have since put measures in pro boxing, like more extensive pre fight medical exams & reducing the number of rounds.

I hated it at the time, but now I do think it’s good. I think it’s because I originally went into it expecting something like Rocky 3 and 4. Without that expectation, it’s much better.

You were talking so much, you missed a lot. Rocky and Drago did touch gloves at the end as a sign of mutual respect. There's no one to blame for Apollo's death. Boxers know the risks when they enter the ring. He went out like he wanted to. Drago was exiled after the loss. Even his wife left him. Watch Creed 2. Drago returns. It's outstanding.

Guys, Rocky IV came out in 1985. Mr. T played B.A. Baracus in the 1983 television series The A-Team. (I should know: I used to watch the A-Team, and I loved Mr. T, especially his signature phrase "I pity the fool!"; and I was SO excited when I found out he would be in Rocky III.) So Rocky IV actually was NOT Mr. T's first acting role. BTW, Muhammad Ali died June 3, 2016.

Erm, Mr T was in Rocky III which came out in 1982, making it his first acting role. Clubber wasnt in Rocky IV at all.

@@ChristopherJames1993 Oops, I meant "So Rocky III actually was NOT Mr. T's first acting role." But you are correct: Rocky III came out in 1982 and The A-Team began in 1983. So unless Google's incorrect, Rocky III WAS Mr. T's acting debut. Since Mr. T is synonymous with the phrase "I pity the fool", I always thought he carried that phrase from The A-Team over to Rocky III, but I guess it's the other way around!
