Correct me if i'm wrong. I thought HIV enters human body bt interacting with CD4 and with a CO-RECEPTOR either CCR5 (R5) or CXCRŕ (X4) or both (R5X4) where both are chemokine receptors. (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3405824/#!po=0.458716). Since chemokine receptor are mostly expressed by immune cells, ie T lymphocytes hence the target for the virus. I was studying the receptor but their involvement in cancer.

Depends on what you do with it... If you take a single medication against it, it will evolve over the time of about six months to a point where it is resistent against the drug. Without medication, it evolves to stay ahead of your immune system. But modern ART or HAART medications combine 3-5 different drugs all targeting different mechanisms the virus needs to replicate and spread. Statistically speaking, it is impossible for the virus to adapt to even three, let alone five drugs at the same time, while also staying ahead of your immune system. Which is the reason why your body is slowly getting rid of the virus. It can't destroy it completely, as the virus can stay dormant inside your cells, but it won't affect you or others, because there are too few viral particles in your blood to do any harm.

How come everyone seems to have forgotten "the Berlin man" who was cured of HIV and leukemia at the same time when he recieved a bone marrow transplant from a person who has immunity from HIV? And now there is "the London patient" who has also been cured of HIV and Hodgkin's Lymphoma using the same procedure. ETA: I completely understand that the Berlin man was kind of a fluke, but the London patient was a replication of the Berlin man, with excellent results and a second cure. Maybe we should take a moment and stop with the pills and the shots and look at what HAS already worked. Maybe we can find a better answer, or the answer, there. Of course, everything has to be done in the most ethical way, but there are enough people with this specific genetic mutation that makes them immune to HIV, somebody will come forward and allow their cells to be tested. HeLa cells were successfully cloned in, what, the 60's? If we could clone HeLa cells then, then why can't we do something to copy or induce the mutation that cures/creates immunity for HIV? Isn't that exactly what CRISPR was created for?

Chelsea Older We don’t clone HeLa, those cells are functionally immortal oh their own. The cured HIV cases are under incredibly rare circumstances and not reproducible outside those rare circumstances.

@@codename495 Not sure where you're getting your information from but HeLa cells were successfully cloned in 1953. Yes, the original line of cells are functionally immortal, but they have been cloned as demand grew. As for the Berlin Patient, you must have missed the part where I said that the London Patient was a complete reproduction of the Berlin Patient. so, yes, it is reproducible. Roughly 19% of all northern Europeans carry the mutation making them immune to HIV. It's not as rare as you think.

Ok overall but please DO NOT tell people you can not transmit the disease sexually even if you are in remission. Low viral load is great but you are still HIV positive. Also, Prep and PEP are not the be all end all nor do they confer the best or efficacious immunity. Although in some communities they may be better than nothing. ALWAYS use safe sex methods such as a condom (using Prep or not!).
