When I receive inspiration, I don’t always hear words. More often it’s like a picture. A memory with which I’m then left to ponder and attempt to articulate into my words. My impressions best expressed to my future self or perhaps others.

We tried this tonight in our family with Mosiah 2:41. I was surprised how different but very good every one’s translations were.

Great suggestions! I wish we’d known how to do this with our children when they were at home with us.

I love everything about this - this is how I study. I need to be better with inviting my kids into that process. The problem we truly have seems to stem from our desire to 'go through' the seminary reading with our teens - so they can fill requirements , a worthy goal, as far as it goes - but I couldn't swear they're learning anything by that process, even with classroom discussions to help them along. How can we change that paradigm of plowing through the books as if it were some means to an end?

I think this is very helpful. I started reading NLT for Bible and new testament and I enjoy reading the Bible now. There are a lot of resources for interpretations. people that have been studying and writing for a long time that are not lds have very important insights from studying language, Nehemiah Gordon is a really good resource for the Bible. He understands the Jewish context through and through (he is Jewish and grew up where he was not really allowed to question rabbis interpretations and he wanted to understand the Bible himself) and talks about these things in an interesting and indepth matter.I know that no matter the interpretation there can be some loss of meaning. Anyways we believe the Bible as far as it is translated correctly and the good news is this has been a continual work in progress and we shouldn't be afraid to read another translation or resources that open it up to the understanding in our current language and the context of the original culture and language. It is hard for me to read kjv

In my Masters of Divinity classes we do what you’re talking about, it’s called Hermeneutics.

Sometimes when I’m trying to translate words I find it difficult because I get stuck on a phrase that I don’t know how to translate like “and it came to pass” where I might as well be saying “what happened is” though this could lose the meaning of the words since it doesn’t directly come from the definition of the word. Do you have any ideas about what to do when this happens ? Or does this ever happen to you and if so what do you do about it ?
