Started a 12-week in-person Coding Bootcamp two weeks before my 40th Birthday (9/2019). No prior development experience. Got my first job in June 2020. Spent several months completely focused on learning the craft, and definitely had to rely on networking and connections to get my foot in the door. But I pulled it off, at 40. My advice - have money set aside or a way to allow yourself to focus on learning for several months like it's a full-time (or at least part-time) job. Second, get a good mentor. Third, make real connections. And finally - ABC. Always Be Coding!

How likely do you think it is to get a six figure starting salary as a junior? That's what I'm currently making as an automation engineer but I'm trying to make a transition to software engineering,, however, not sure I could be able to take a pay cut at this point in my life.
@mpc79
@mpc79 Жыл бұрын
@@MarvinOGarza I don't think that it is very likely. That said, if you can produce $100k a year quality work then you probably wouldn't be hired as a Junior as much as a Developer or Lead Developer, where that salary is more realistic. I was making just under $100k as a paralegal before transitioning to Developer and I took a pretty hefty pay cut. Will take me a few years to catch back up, but I'm much happier and learned to live off less.

I've worked as a Project Manager for almost 15 years in logistics and transportation. Recently got thanked (with several other fellow PM's) for my sevices due the Covid19 impact/shutdown. Instead of going for a quick restart somewhere else as a PM again, I've decided to start learning Java & JavaScript. I already do know a little bit of HTML & CSS. So I thought: refreshing my HTML/CSS and picking up Java & JS, combined with my 15 years of professional experience in projects (even nothing with development or coding)... will give me nice opportunities. I'm 45 and planning to start the Java course sometime this year, finishing it by end summer next year and go jobhunting by Q2-Q2 2021. Since I'll be working for 25-30 years to come (that's even longer than my track to date!!!), I chose to take a step back now and to invest in something I like doing. And man, do I like coding! I don't mind starting at the bottom of the ladder again, since I've got still a longer professional track ahead and hopefully I'll be doing something I actually enjoy.

@thomas samson I didn't know anyone, the company company contacted me.Before that i was building small applications for data analysis using Python only.I started looking for ways i can present the data on an online platform and that's when i discovered Django.I only used KZbin tutorials to build small web applications that i believed could provide some business value(nothing complex).That got me into a basic understanding of Databases,Linux Servers(Apache),Front-End Dev(HTML,JavaScript,CSS),Deploying Applications into a production environment.I added those to my portfolio on different recruitment sites.When they interviewed me, they were quite blown away by the fact i build those applications end-to-end, learnt new technologies so fast and that i'm able to develop on both front and backend.It was not an easy journey, i had to commit to many hours of learning, testing, frustrating bugs etc. One of the applications i build was for finance managers to input the company budget for projects and the actual used funds.I stored that data in a database(MySQL).Using that data, i build a different dashboards to show the relationship between 'Budgeted and Used funds' using pie charts, line graphs etc in real-time.That's my story.It's definitely possible at 40.The four things to focus on are:Commit to learning,Build Useful Stuff,Share with recruiters,Learn More.I wish you and everyone all the best.

Another thought provoking video, Stef! Here's what a business owner told me years ago, in the most direct way possible, and why I freelance instead of coding for others. He/she wrote: Something in B school made me hate working for others. Wealth building rules #1: extract maximum human talent with minimum of sharing of wealth with talent (see management theory). Keep products of talent from becoming their intellectual property, and make it yours instead. (See legal) #2. Create workplace culture keeping in mind this extended equation: Good personality = compliant = young = snacks and flattery = less actual payout It's just good business and bad home education. (No, she/he isn't a communist, but a successful business person I met at school.)

@Peter Mortensen Hi, I may have relied too much on reader inference? Perhaps these definitions will unlock my friend's letter: Profit: very roughly, the difference between what you paid for something and what you get for it. The idea is to make profit positive and as big as possible. Power: the ability to get others to work for you. Management: the organ that makes sure those who work for you are paid as little as possible and yet still produce maximally. From these basic rules/definitions, the rest of the game's meaning, it's behavior, even the boring anti-trust hearings, fall into place.

I remember looking for jobs in my late 20s (not software industry) and one of the questions that came up in the interview was, would I feel comfortable working for a manager, younger than me? I was younger than 30, and that was considered kind of old for the job. Every company has a certain culture, what they consider appropriate. Now in my mid 30s and looking to make the move into software, I do not want to go from interview, to interview, just to be told no. I am going to make projects on my own, maybe start a you tube channel. The thing to do is make yourself marketable and companies will reach out to you.

You make good points (as always), but the truth is that recruiters don't think like you. There is a lot of discrimation when it comes to age. Most developers write their first lines of code when they're teenagers, so recruiters and HR people expect you to be one of those. I'm learning to code at the age of 38, I'm a complete dinosaur in the developer's world. No company would hire me no matter what a great portfolio I might have or how fast I learn stuff. I could try some small company only if I know some people that works there and actually gives an oportunity. Otherwise, I'll have to go freelancing.

Older devs also know when and how to say no, which is often times more important than just saying yes for the sake of saying yes and wasting lots of everyones time. As you get older you begin to realize that writing code is only part of the job, and its just as important to explain to non tech people why you shouldn't do something. But then again, if you are at an established company, wasting time is a big portion of the day so I guess it doesn't matter.

This is really interesting, I'm just started learning some web dev stuff. I'm a bit younger than this guy, but closer to 40 than to 30, and I have no ambitions to make web development my full-time job. For me it's a hobby that's kind of useful to know as it's tangential to my work. I've also made a couple of career changes in my life and taken quite different directions, but always found a way. What's interesting to me is that I'm also a musician, and I notice that the guys that get the gigs around me are all at least my age. It seems like doors start to open when you hit about 35. The younger guys and girls tend to form bands with their friends that'll last for a few years until someone has other priorities, but when you're looking for a pro (or a semi-pro, in our case) you really value the guy that's got a little more experience, seems like he's going to show up on time to practice, has his own transport, etc. over the 20-year-old virtuoso that you just don't know how long he's going to be into it.

So I had no way to prove that I know the fundamentals of code. Someone advised me to start solving the puzzles on Hackerrank. Roughly 3-4 years ago or, I was #6 in functional programming in the UK, on par with some Oxford students. So proudly I have added this achievement to my CV. To your and my surprise I was told to take it off, because nobody will give me a job. I found it hard to believe it, but during the conversations with the recruiters, I could notice when they lost the interest with me. When the recruiters asked what was my strong points I said algorithms and coding fundamentals. That was the point where many of them have lost interest. So if you are good with the fundamentals of code you are better off to hide it. Mythical employer as a person does not exist in larger companies, because everything was taken over by teams of people.

I think the take away with the age issue is that you have to be smart. At a certain point you have to stop chasing every new shiny thing and focus on mastery. If your plan is to be an employee, you have to look at your value to that business. If that business is writing software testing, do projects related to that. If the only jobs around you are COBOL, you better learn it. Older newbies need to up their game, they just need to be smart.

On my case, I picked the language I like the most and started creating a solid project that could be profitable. The project will be available free, just to show my skills in that language. Let's remember that when they need a web designer, they will want to hire the person that can make clean looking sites with well-written code. For back-end, they will give priority to the one with the most potential in back-end. And so on. Being a jack of all trades is good. They will want someone that can fix or build other things when the need arrives. Plus you have a better view of which area you like the most so you can be great at it as well. I'm focusing on a project from python mostly at the moment, but I will have to check out a bunch of others to expand my views as well. Creating your own projects is great because there's a lot of details that we only notice in real-time practice. First I noticed that my project would be a lot easyer as object-oriented data. Then I had a ton of issues (later solved) about how to create packages and make proper imports. Then I learned how objects in python are insanely easy to modify and adapt to your code. Recently I learned how docstrings work, so every object I create in Python will show their uses and descriptions when you hover your cursor over them. It's even funny how the later sections of my code improved comparing to the first objects I made. Every one of these improvements stick with us on the long run. Good luck on your learning. I'm gonna start job searching after I'm done with my project. But it takes a lot of patience to not go crazy when starting on the field.

If you can get good at js you can use that skill for front and back end web development => React, Node/Deno..

I am actually more on the PHP side, Im good enough with JS as well, can do OOP in both, Id say Im fine with HTML/CSS, I know Sass, I recently started using Laravel too, willing to pickup React as well in the near future, Im really good with adobe suite (PS, AE, PP, AI), photography/videography, windows administration and even hardware level repair for PCs, different electronics and gadgets, I can do quite a bunch yes but I fear Im not best I can be in any of these to use it as my main "title". As I said I come from a poor country, I got some of my own personal projects but none of them are of legendary level, my best one will be an unsplash clone in vanilla php ans js but that's about it. I feel like starting big personal project takes me too much time, and if I try to speed things up it ends up half baked, would've love to at least get an unpaid internship just so someone can judge my work or tell me oh you did this wrong instead of me figuring it out after 10days of sweat.

First paying job I ever had I pretty much lied my way into. This was back in 07/08 - basically told my employer I could build a website in X amount of days. Yeah, I had no understanding of CSS, current HTML (was still using tables 😂😂😂) PHP, ASP or anything for that matter. So I got the job and was thrown into the deep end with a rude awakening. Sometimes the best way to learn is under pressure. Having to rapidly iterate on your skillset as you develop a project. Mind you, this is coming from my perspective as I'm self taught. I'm sure many would disagree.

So many of the want adds are phony. Many of them people looking to sponge some technique off someone who really does have the skill.

Trick requirements: •Must have 16-20 YEARS AS A STACK DEVELOPER . (Look up the history of “stack development”) •Must know Java, JavaScript, OR Python. (“OR” means the employer doesn’t know the stack their goin to use and they need wiggle room for negotiation if you ARE an expert in one language , but familiar with the others). •Note: Be mindful of companies that do not make efforts to be diverse. Pay attention to the names of people on the teams and the interview board. If everyone is originated from the same “town”, then it’s not a good environment to be in. Remember, the interview session , is ALSO for the interviewee to gauge the company.

but Mr. Stefan I'm 18 years old self taught web developer, I learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Vue.js in a matter of 3 months but I'm still not able to land a job in the freelance world because I'm young and i only have done projects as exercises and not for a business or something so its really hard to go on a website like freelancer.com and try to get a job when another guy with more experience applies to it, it feels like i dont have a chance to find a job judging of my lack of experience (because i am 18) instead of judging me for my skills. any advice to help please, thanks.

Best workers in any area start from 45. - But seeing object who makes proposal even more... So it is not problem at all for good company. Willing to earn more. Not steal more. So don't sell yourself. Find FRIENDS. 😉

Bad title. The video is 90% about the same regular, mundane advice not about age and being a dev. It makes me weary of your other videos now.

Thanks Stefan. I purchased your web designer package a few days ago, and trying to commit to at least a lesson a day. I'm not 40 yet but getting there lol. Probably take your php course after i'm through with html/css/javascript. Do you have any discounted hosting offers?
