The only time I have experienced halyard wrap on the forestay was when the upper swivel was lacking in lubrication badly, it would just jam under tension. It seemed fine when lowered but when raised and tensioned by the sail it simply jammed in place and wrapped the halyard. The furling system's lubrication seems to get overlooked often during annual maintenance,.

a lot of time what you think is the problem ends up not being the problem and throwing parts at a problem can be really expensive. I would recommend trying your theory of getting the sail further up which ( youll see later in my answer you might be using the wrong halyard ) will leave less halyard to wrap around the top of the extrusion. What you really need to do is hire a rigger to go up and look at it or have someone hoist you up the mast and you look at it. so when you get to a marina make a few friends and buy some beers, or call a rigger. As a one man show its very hard to figure out problems aloft and you cant just buy $900 parts and hope they fix the problem. one thing ive learned is that a boat is not like a car or motorcycle and fixing things usually takes weeks between diagnosing and ordering/finding parts. There seem to be very few easy immediate fixes. It likely has something to do with the swivel but it could also be how the halyard is exiting the mast, it could be at the wrong angle. It may be run incorrectly, a sheave may have broken, you might be using the spinnaker halyard which would make the angle incorrect and cause it to wrap. So again, before throwing $900 at it take some time to investigate.

So true. Stop. Have a beer. Have a nap. Often the solution to a problem is to not dwell on it. The answer can just appear in your mind. And have a knowledgeable friend look it over. Have him/her look over your entire boat. 1 loose hose clamp can be a disaster. Climb the master. Watch as your friend opens and closes the furler. But don't just buy a new one without knowing the problem. That expensive new one could do the same thing if is wasn't, in fact, the furler to blame.

@Rainmaker60LM ok im going to internalize that and think before throwing cash at it. The only reason I left the Marina was to go to a place to get pulled out and to figure out all these issues on the way. I just gotta make it a little further then it's probably going to be a month on the hard fixing all these problems that have presented themselves. I appreciate the help from anyone. I'll try everything you suggested

@@SVRestless people in the boating community are incredibly friendly and willing to help. They often won’t take any money they just like to be helpful. Some know a little and some know a lot, you’ll have to decide who to listen to. It’s hard to not want to fix something immediately but that often doesn’t work. The one thing you will hear over and over is that “ the plan is only the plan until it changes”. You might be there a month it may be 3 but get a good education on your boat and fix the stuff you need to. Don’t rush it, nothing happens quickly. Pay for experts when you need them. Research them before hiring, and the cheapest guy usually is not the best. Also guys who aren’t willing to explain thing to you or let you watch them work ( as long as you are not slowing them down ) are not people I would hire. Some yards don’t let you on the boat while they work but very few. Just ask around where ever you are and on some FB sailing forums for people/business reccomendations. Where are you and where are you going to haul out?

I had an 1980 O'Day 30 for 37 years. The displacement is about 10,500 lbs. Modern 30 footers are 1,000's of pound lighter. In those days they made sure there was enough fiberglass to be safe at sea. The bottom line is that by adding more weight, people, equipment, or provisions, you are adding a smaller percentage to the total weight. You don't have to specify where people need to sit in order to keep the boat from heeling too much. The boat slices through waves much smoother. It's like comparing a Volkswagon to a Cadillac. As far as your channel goes, unlike people that try to offer instruction as self professed experts, your channel has a unique approach. My father-in-law was from the Middle East. He told me there was a saying in Arabic had went something like this: "Don't believe a doctor.Believe someone that has had the disease and went through the experience. Interestingly, my worst and most dangerous experience occurred while myself and my family were attached to my mooring in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. It was Labor Day, and I listened to the weather channel. A storm was approaching from New Jersey at 45 miles per hour. Think about that. The speed of the approach was 45 miles per hour. I can't imagine the speed of the wind within the storm. It hit so fast, that we couldn't get off the boat waiting for he tender. I instructed everyone to stay below and put on life jackets. As I looked up through the hatch I saw hundreds of seagulls spinning out of control as if shot out of a cannon. My oldest son and I put on foul weather gear and went on deck. I started the engine to take pressure off the mooring lines.I sent my son up to the bow to see the progress and alert if any boats broke loose. The next events were concerning to say the least. 1- white mist surrounded the boat blocking the view of anything on either side of the boat. 2- while the engine was running, I couldn't hear it. 3- Normally, when the wind shifts, the boat tilts slightly and then straightens up. This time, it tilted and just lay on it's side. Turning the wheel did nothing. 4- Large hail stones came down, pocking the deck and my back. Boat cushions saved my head. After 40 minutes it cleared up and the tender picked us up. The yacht club was devastated. Trees were uprooted. We learned that 3 tornados touched down in the bay. Winds close to 200 mph caused the mist. My cockpit was in the eye of the tornado at such low pressure that you couldn't hear sound. All of the water was blown out of the bay causing my boat to temporarily rest on the seabed. While terrifying, we were in the safest place.

@@SVRestless I had a 16 horsepower Universal engine. I would explore spare parts that can be substitute which can be acquired locally.such as impellers, seals etc. Also, many years ago, I flew to Martinique. I saw large expensive teak decked sailboats used sea water to care for the teak. Salt water unlike fresh water swells the wood and seals in the oils. I leaves a nice grey patina. Oils tend to oxidize and cause black streaks eventually Solutions that clean teak often eat away the wood and require extensive sanding. I find the alcohol stove quite useless. A small portable butane or propane stove much more practical. I met a fellow who own an O'Day 30 and fashioned a styrofoam mold to fit in the ice chest. He would prepare several weeks of food in plastic bags, place in the foam, top with water, freeze and insert into the ice chest. He'd chip away meals for a couple of weeks..

From my experience, halyard wrap is caused by the top swivel binding. This can be from the swivel to tight against the stop at the top of the forestay or as simple as to much tension on the halyard itself. Try backing off on the hayard tension just a bit and see if that helps. That was the problem with my current boat. The halyard needs to be fairly snug but not drum tight.
@SVRestless
@SVRestless 8 күн бұрын
@SailingPanacea i haven't heard that yet! Oh dang I hope that helps. I'm going to try it. So basically, I pulled the halyard too much. Do you think making that metel part at the bottom longer will also help. The head of the sail doesn't go up high enough for the wheel I the top to create and significant angle on the halyard.
@SailingPanacea
@SailingPanacea 8 күн бұрын
@SVRestless The purpose for the cable at the bottom (tack) is to get the foot of the sail above the bow rails. Making it longer likely won't help. I am convinced you have a tension problem. Think of a wheel bearing on an axle, with the right tension, it spins freely, overnighter it, and you can turn it. Make sure to lube the bearings on the top swivel, let off on your halyard tension a bit, and I expect your problem will go away. From what I saw in your video, I doubt there are problems with your furler.$$$$$$

An added note, if you have space at the top of the forestay, it won't hurt to extend the bottom to raise the headsail up. If nothing else, it will give you more visibility under the sail which is always a good tging.

Leave the wire pendant (length of cable) attached to the swivel and attach the head (top) of sail to the bottom of the pendant. That will get the swivel close to the top and the halyard will have a better angle to prevent halyard wrap. Attach the tack (bottom) of the sail to the shackle on the drum. If that still does not get the swivel close to the top you can add a pendant to the tack of the sail also to get it even higher. You are having problems cause the swivel is not high enough. Do what I said and that should solve your problem. Next solution would be getting a sail the correct dimensions. It sounds like the sail is too small, but it should work as long as you get the swivel all the way to the top.

Halyard wrap is usually caused by not enough angle between the forestay and the halyard. Raising the sail up may solve it. Some people have to resort to a diverter, basically a piece of metal mounted near the top of the mast to give a better angle for the halyard. I'd try the raising the sail up higher first though.

The halyard swivel looks bad. It should not be so sloppy on the furler section. It might be binding once it's under tension, there is a lot of tension on it when in use and with the sail full. Also the donut type diverter is OK, but the type of diverter that fastens to the mast and the halyard passes though it, those work better. You're correct to pay attention to where the head of the sail finishes with respect to the top of the furler, but I think the issue is more likely the swivel. You should be able to get one for less than $600. What make is the furler? eBay can be a good source for bits and pieces like that.

@scottywhitegloves it's and old facnor system. They wanted 900 for that swivel. I'm having a hard time getting anyone to sell me the swivel. I put in an order only to have it canceled by them. Ifk I might have to buy a whole new furking system, oh well, before I do that I want to see the bottom. :) very soon I'll get pulled out. Just waiting on those injector seals to get out of here! Thank you so much for the info.

It's a bit hard to see,but , if that is s typical furler system it is kinda critical where that black sleeve your playing with ends up in relation to the black collar at the top of the furler tube. Sort of distance you need to source online your specific fuler manual for. That black plastic collar at the top is typically movable up and down the tube to be locked off with allen bolts to suit the sail and sometimes has a missing quadrant that the halyard is meant to lie in at a specific distance from the top of the sail. Too long and you can end up with tangled unmanageable genoa in full flight and even dumping the halyard wont birng it down. As it is hard to adjust this in situ you can cheat by adding more wire as suggested but you still need to get the distance right and it obviously hightens the whole sail.

Bruh we need more videos, you still haven't described yourself. Sailing experience, why your doing this, what your goals are. That's a huge leap from where you lived to down south to buy the boat. Also curious if you looked into boats on the great lakes. You can buy there and sail through the lakes to the east coast and down. I wonder if you looked into that. Also curious what you paid for the boat. I paid $600 for my 84 O'day 25 last summer. First boat, learning on a lake before I upgrade and hit the ocean.

It seems to me that short link attaches to the bottom of the sail if needed. The Sail slides up in the groove and shouldn't twist going up. The furling line should be secured, to keep twist from happening

When I bought my boat the top of the head sail furling had a cable attached to the sail (not sure what you call it) so I am unable to drop the sail and change from genoa to jib. My boat is 23’ and on a trailer so we drop the mast. This season I am going to correct it, and properly attach the sail and see if I have the same problems as you are experiencing.

I am not totally sure what problem you are having but it sounds like it is the cause of several problems: sail not high enough to reduce the length of halyard, halyard not tight enough, and swivel too worn out. Lubing the swivel may help but careful which type you use as many types will attract dust making it worse over time.
