You are so sweet😍, thank you for this very informative video.And, yes Malaga is super touristy, esp.right now, on Christmas!!! Seems, spanish families do kind of christmas hopping on weekends visiting also the wonderfully illuminated Malaga. And then the cruise tourists, 2 cruise ships today, so, the city got packed. Excellent video! We spent 4 days there and were enchanted. We drove to frigliana and a few other little towns driving towards Valencia. I hope you try the Balearic islands - Menorca, Mallorca and Ibiza! We loved them all for different reasons. We liked Menorca because it was small and quiet and the beaches are insanely beautiful. Mallorca is the most beautiful and diverse of the islands, but bigger and more touristy. And Ibiza is where we left our heart. We thought it was going to be all young clubbing people (we are in our mid 50’s) but we were off season so none of that was going on and it really is a nice green island with great beaches. Ibiza just felt right. Also, We are also plant based and we don’t particularly want to live somewhere where bullfighting is still around and popular. Understand it’s cultural but it makes us too sad.

Awesome video, great info! I am looking at Portugal mostly as a place to retire, and Spain is a candidate #2 to explore. The main concern is the tax situation. Double taxation, US and Spain, is something to figure out how to deal with. I am under impression, based on videos only, that the tax situation is easier with Portugal. Would be great to hear you comparing tax options for an US expat between Portugal and Spain. Thanks again for an awesome informative video!
@SeekingParadiseBugs Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We are living in Lisbon and had a hard time deciding if we wanted to move here or Spain. Some of the reasons we decided on Portugal are the welcoming people, the NHR tax regime, no wealth tax and we can apply for citizenship after having residency for 5 years. We just got back from exploring Fuengirola and Mijas in the Costa del Sol of Spain and will be doing a video about those areas also. We would like to live in Lisbon in the summer and the Costa del Sol in the winter. Great idea about a video! It is difficult though because everyone's tax situation is different. We'll definitely share what we learn. We have a video about Lisbon and why we chose our next home base in Lisbon that you might want to watch. Also, check out our vlog series about our move to Portugal that may be helpful if you decide to make the move here.

The cross-border fee seems high but then I guess it compensates for the very low weekly rental fee of 16 dollars a day. At that price you must have got the basic insurance package. Tolls in Portugal can really kill you and often free national roads are not an option. As you discovered, in Spain you can travel all over most of the country without paying tolls. For example, from Lisbon to the Spanish border at Badajoz you pay a toll, but from Badajoz down to Málaga the autovia is toll-free. Living in Chaves, way up in the north, we often go down to Tavira, on the Algarve, taking Spanish toll-free highways. We drive more kilometers but have empty free roads and avoid the congestion of having to pass Porto and Lisbon,

I don't know anyone who makes 2710€ a month in Malaga (the average wage you cite) - the minimum wage is closer to 1000€ and rents have skyrocketed here. The average worker makes closer to 1K a month, and yet it's very hard to rent a 2 bdrm apartment for less than that. In fact, long term rentals are extremely hard to find now, thanks to the 'expat boom' you mention, property speculators, AirBnB... Malaga has become a trendy place and the locals are getting squeezed out. Sad to see.
@SeekingParadiseBugs Жыл бұрын
The 2710€ is the nation's average salary. Smaller cities other than Madrid and Barcelona will certainly be on the lower end of this number. Yes, gentrification is an issue in many desirable cities around the world including Lisbon where we live now. The government here is eliminating the golden visa and Airbnb approvals in an effort to help. It is definitely a very difficult issue.

Me not too far from you in Ashburn, work in Herndon, Fairfax county!!! Visited Spain in 2020 covering Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and as far south as Murcia and stayed at a fine Golf Resort called Roda Golf Resorts. our goal was to visit Malaga but time was not on our side. Spain was great, but Portugal seems to be even more attractive from residency, cost of living, Tax rules etc. Portugal is one place i am seriously looking at and plan on visiting later this year. Since we started travelling to Europe we fell in love and every country and city has something new and a new vibe, history and experience. will be binge watching your channel next few days to see the places through your eyes and Vlog. Thanks for the great job you guys do and Good Luck! By the way the scary walk thru the canyon was awesome and definitely want to do it. There is one similar to that in Switzerland too dont recall the name. Adios Amigos from Hot Va. Today was 92F here

We've lived in Herndon and Ashburn too. ☺️ You've explored quite a bit! We also love Europe and are so happy to be living here now so we can travel around more easily. Portugal has been wonderful and obviously many people think the same as the price of real estate has been rising in the major cities. We will definitely look into hikes in Switzerland, thank you for the heads up and for liking, commenting and subscribing to our channel!! We hope you enjoy our other videos. Please reach out when you visit Portugal, we'd be happy to meet up for coffee or happy hour. Stay cool in Virginia!

Great video!!! The clean streets comments made me laugh though. My neighborhood, just around the corner from Plaza Merced and Picasso's house is not clean at all 🤣. It seriously needs a good hosing down. The tourist areas are very clean, however. One thing I would mention about the public health care as a non EU retiree is that after you are registered ( on the padron) living here for a year you can apply for Convenio Especial, in which you pay a monthly fee for public healthcare. (60 euros for under 65 years old and goes up to 157 at age 65) It does not include medicines and a few other things. If you are working, then you get public health included with your job.

I thought it was only me that could only check off one thing on my daily to - do list! Good to know I'm not alone. Siesta in Sicily is by far my biggest challenge since leaving the USA.
@SeekingParadiseBugs Жыл бұрын
right? we are adding 'siesta' to our routines also or what we call 'power naps' 😁 we like it!
@andrewrobinson2565 Жыл бұрын
Siesta is supposed to sleep off lunch. Long siestas (and a café solo after) do that AND give you the energy for the evening 👍. That's the theory. My wife has 3 years left to work so I'm in neutral in the south of France. Just downloaded a podomètre. (Starting tomorrow 🤣🤣🤣.)
@GladBurgio Жыл бұрын
Being a caregiver for my husband who has dementia, I'm always racing against the clock. It's hard to get out the door before the world stops for siesta. Then when the world starts up again, it's time to start dinner. He's in bed by 8:30. Day over. So, something to consider if anyone is contemplating a move.
@andrewrobinson2565 Жыл бұрын
@@GladBurgio Sending positive thoughts 💪. My wife cares for Alzheimer's patients in a Day Care Centre in Marseillan 🇨🇵. Are there any near you where he could spend the day and give you a break? A minibus picks the patients up 8.30-9 and the day finishes at 4.30pm when the minibus departs to drop the patients at home again. If you are resident in Spain you should get help with the cost (55€ maximum per day for the patients that need the most help, before state aid). There are activities every day and festive meals and days out. It allows carers to have "me time". All the best to you 👍👍.

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! Tax residents of Spain are taxed on their worldwide income at progressive rates so it depends on your annual income. Also many regions have wealth and inheritance taxes. The Andalucia region has recently eliminated the wealth tax though.

Fantastic video. If you are Residents in Lisbon and come to stay in Spain and stay over 90 days how does Spain know? When we crossed back and forth no one even looked the passports.

Thank you so much! We see this question asked a lot in Facebook groups. We're not sure that any of the Schengen countries really crack down much on this but you don't want to end up in a situation where they do. Also, most places you stay ask for your passport, both hotels and Airbnb's we've stayed at require this.
