I'm new to your channel.. I know I could be happy in many different places but taxes are a factor in my budget so thanks for including taxes in your assessments. I wonder if that is what is keeping you from moving immediately to Spain since its warmer and drier there. Thx for the detailed, informative videos for those of us serious about leaving the US. (I'm most interested in Spain because I struggle with learning other languages.)

Welcome! We're glad you found our channel. Taxes are one of the reasons we didn't move to Spain right away. We were able to get the NHR tax regime in Portugal and we are able to obtain citizenship in 5 years instead of 10 in order to have a European passport. We would love to stay in Portugal and may do so part time but we definitely do not want to stay year round due to the humid winters. We also love Spain and know we will be living there at least part-time as well in the future.

Are income taxes (like from US Social Security) taxed differently/separately than wealth tax? Or are they combined and then taxed?
@SeekingParadiseBugs
@SeekingParadiseBugs 6 күн бұрын
Income tax is separate from wealth tax. If you do not meet the minimum net worth for wealth tax in the region you live then you do not even have to worry about wealth tax.

That is a great question for a US tax accountant as we are not professionals. Due to the double taxation agreement, we believe you can adjust your US taxes. You may have to file an amended return or returns for the appropriate year(s) though.

Hi! Fun update. Re drivers’ licenses, that’s a great tip about exchanging from a U.S. license to Portuguese. It’s not so simple everywhere. BTW in Spain you can take the written exam in English, and even the driving exam. But the English can be odd, and answers don’t always make sense. Whether in English or Spanish you just pretty much have to memorize the correct answers. Also: Depending on your state, France may let you exchange your license for a French one if you have a French residency visa. Happy trails! Looking forward to your 2025 videos.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Cost of living is definitely relative to where you're moving from and your lifestyle. Estepona, like many popular spots in Spain, has seen prices rise in recent years, especially for property. While it may not be as budget-friendly as it once was, it can still offer great value compared to other parts of Europe or even major cities in the US.

Thanks for the very informative video. Can a Spanish citizen who lives in Spain less than 183 days a year and whose income is derived entirely from the United States and Canada be considered as a non tax resident? What about social benefits like medical for example? Would that Spanish citizen non tax resident be eligible to receive those benefits?
@SeekingParadiseBugs
@SeekingParadiseBugs 23 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! It is our understanding that as long as you live in Spain less than 183 days a year you are not considered a tax resident. There are caveats that we listed like if your family lives there full time, etc. We are not sure about social benefits if you are a Spanish citizen but not a tax resident. A great question for Pro Spain Consulting if you are thinking of making the move.

What do you think about taxes in Spain for US expats? Looks like it is very high. There is what I see: Roth IRA or Roth 401k, are not treated as pensions, and both would be taxed through the wealth tax, and also taxed under the income tax once you make withdrawals. Also for an income of €100,000 in Spain, your estimated total tax liability would be around €55,889.50 (state + regional taxes). For the family : Filing Individually: €55,889.50 (net income of €44,110.50)Filing Jointly: €48,371 (net income of €51,629)

Correct. Taxes are higher in Spain. Portugal has NHR worth looking into. Regardless, be prepared to pay more taxes in Europe. The treaties are to avoid double taxation. You still have to pay your share to your country of residence.
