You guys should do a “double-sided” episode consisting of stories where OP posts and then another person involved in the situation comments or posts about it to add more context or clarify things. Such stories are often full of plot twists, eye openers, nuance, and/or drama. Just as you did an “oops, all updates” episode, this could be another special one.

the one with the wedding dress reminds me of that one story were the bride also knew a in law was going to wear a fancy full on wedding dress with veil. and she decided as many family members had already gotten married, and many found it sad there attire and dresses were never worn again. so she told everybody else to wear their old wedding dresses and tuxedos to celebrate the spirit of marriage. Everybody in the family were delighted and felt so happy and nostalgic. and the in law was pissed she wasn't the only star that was shining. also added petty points, the in law hadn't been married yet and all married couples and people had been asked to wear their attire, so she heard all evening "you will find one soon" "your time will come" "there are plenty of fish in the sea" from people who felt sad for her fake wedding gown.

The type of person who will charge $200 at a "family rate" isn't going to feel guilty when if you do right and just ask for $20, they will take advantage and move on, maybe not even remember what they did before. My sister has 2 adorable kids and the happiest puppy (she’s almost 8 but still a puppy) and will ask me all the time to come babysit for a couple hours or take her dog out. It never occurs to me to ask her for anything. I think the most I’ve asked for is if I can steal something to eat while babysitting. She has given me a gift card in the past and my reaction was “wait what is this for?” I would help my family because it’s my family. That’s it.

To clarify the discussion at 57:00 -- "Petty" does indeed mean "small," but in the phrase "petty revenge," it's not the revenge that's small, but the _person,_ morally. They're being metaphorically "small" for taking revenge on something that would be issue-less if handled differently. The phrase "petty revenge" is usually NOT meant in the same way as, say, "petty theft," where the theft itself is small. It's a metaphorical, moral smallness.

I love how QUICK the man in the first story goes from diplomacy to GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY. And starts researching quick-growing plants and all laws to circumvent his neighbours lamp?? So petty yet so cunning, love it, absolute guerrilla tactics. I was almost expecting him to start planing punji sticks across his neighbour’s yard or launch covert operations into his garden at night to plant bamboo

I’m in East Texas, and that bamboo story took me back. We had it in our back yard, and my daddy would have us pluck the sprouts every time he was fixing to mow. He would draw a line that he didn’t want it to grow past. That shit grows quick. One time, when we were like 10 and 12, my little brother and I cut a bunch of it down and built a shelter with it in the backyard. We even put a bunch of branches up to block the sunlight. Mom let me, my brother, and my sister sleep in there that night.

40:32 Judging by the description of the woman, I don’t think she would’ve felt “like shit” if she had only been charged $20 while previously charging OP $200 for the same thing. She sounds extremely entitled and probably doesn’t even remember asking for $200 to watch OPs kid, nor did she ever think that was wrong. In fact, I’d wager that she would’ve still complained about it being $20 and thrown a fit that it wasn’t free

I think the only only time I’ve ever charged $30 an hour was when I was when I was watching like five kids. I for sure wouldn’t do it for a family member. Absolute nonsense. so happy that OP was able to show her what it feels like to be taken advantage of.

Not super insane with inflation. Definitely understandable if they’re qualified in other ways with great references. But this was also a few years ago at least, when living wages were lower, so no. $33+/hr for babysitting a family member is ridiculous.

@@gracewenger575 $33+ an hour for some in general is ridiculous. Daycares don’t even charge that much. My SIL works for a daycare but if she didn’t she’d be paying 600 a week for 2 KIDS. $33+ for any person is crazy. If that’s the “family rate” I can not imagine what her normal rate is.

I think the difference between petty, pro, and nuclear revenge is the amount of effort OP puts into it. Petty is when they put little effort into the revenge while pro and nuclear is when they start reaching movie level of making a person's life a living hell
@slsthewriter1299
@slsthewriter1299 6 ай бұрын
Hard disagree. …kinda. Petty can either mean it in itself is small, *or* it's a pro/nuclear revenge over a small thing, so there's a duality in the adjective depending on what it is you're indicating is petty. If you're describing the conflict as a whole is petty, then yeah. It's not that big of a deal. When you describe *someone* as petty, they themselves are not small. You're saying they will take a small issue and elevate it to whatever extreme just to prove a point. People who commit to pro/nuclear efforts are innately petty.
@GIRru11
@GIRru11 6 ай бұрын
@slsthewriter1299 I'm not really talking about the people themselves, I'm more referring to the actions they do. Like Shane said he considers the story of the woman who slept with her ex's father as pro revenge but I see it as petty because the action itself was a small one time thing, as opposed to tbe final story where OP ruined a man's life by going detective mode
@slsthewriter1299
@slsthewriter1299 6 ай бұрын
@@GIRru11 But that's the thing. Whenever you talk about a petty person, you are talking about them in regards to these instances. And particularly in recent years, colloquial language has adapted and people can mean either "this is just a small thing" or "this is something blown out of proportion *over* a small thing."

@@GIRru11 100%. I do study linguistics, so I personally find it really interesting. xD But, it's highly contextual and depends on the tone. Like there's a huge difference between, "Oh, that's petty," vs "Oh…that's *petty."* The emphasis alone separates one from the other, but that gets lost in translation in writing unless someone knows to use punctuation appropriately.

The root systems for bamboo is insane. We tried to clean some out of a community center outdoors area and to make sure it does not come back you have to dig out the root system. We eventually had to use power saws to cut the roots up enough to pull out because the shovel just does not cut it sometimes. That is diabolical.

Bamboo is so hard to get rid of. We had some at my cabin that my Grandpa wanted to get rid of so he dug it out with a backhoe and burned the remaining dirt to kill it and it still grew back the next year.

@@claudiaarbona9984 they don't get super deep the problem unfortunately is that they grow horizontally really far, really fast. Which is why they start popping up further and further away. Even if you try to dig it out you have to get 100% of it otherwise it'll regenerate Running bamboo is a huge problem in my area so the second I heard the word in the story I involuntary said "nooo!"

Yeah sometimes they'll have a take I just don't relate to and this was it. OP just matched that girl's energy. If the other woman is upset about the rate, she's admitting she was out of line before, and she was out of line out of NOWHERE, whereas OP was just responding in kind. Plus, it's wise for OP to establish that boundary because it sounds like this girl would take advantage of any kindness offered to her. Sometimes you need to do this stuff to show people how bad they are and to protect yourself.

Yep, I feel like the sentiment of "rise above" only works if it's not enabling the shitty behaviour it's responding to. Even if you're not in favour of "an eye for an eye," sometimes you have to think about whether the way you respond to something can be construed as positive reinforcement.

While this makes sense, the situation and comments didn’t sit well with me. I’d venture to say from the story context clues that the first mom earns more money and the half sister earns less and is in more of a struggle. I think if she chose to agree, she should have taken a bit of a loss from the half sister.Also consistently judging splurging on things when someone with a higher income wouldn’t be judged for that probably always seems a bit off to me too. 🤔

For the wedding one, imagine being the person who was told about a change in the plan and to not communicating that to your child, and your child being upset at not knowing the changing plan, and then blaming your other child for having the wedding that they want to have. Like, the dad is an adult, he should be able to copy and paste a text to send it to other people. I guess he doesn't think the wedding is super special since he had two of them
