Thanks for the comment. Not so sure how adding textile medium to this particular method will work. I do believe using the water/vinegar mixture after the color has been placed onto the garment will set the color and prevent it from fading. All color fades over time, there is really nothing that can be done about that. I just always wash my colored garments in cold water, and hang to dry rather than using a dryer. This always seems to preserve the color for longer periods of time.

Hello, Great question! Before washing, submerge your finished artwork/garment into a cold water mixture. I think it's 1C. white vinegar to 1 gallon cold water. I used the same method as RIT dye instructions and it worked. Make sure your finished item is exactly as you wish, because after you set the dye, you wont even be able to bleach out the color. Check Google on setting dye into fabric to get exact measurements. Also, I did speak about setting the dye in Part Two of this Video.

Love this tutorial! I was wondering, do you think using fabric paint would yield the same results? Also, say if I wanted to go extra crazy and use glow in the dark acrylic or glow in the dark fabric paint, do you think the rubbing alcohol would have any effect on the glow in the dark effect?

Love the tutorial! Three questions though. 1. Do you think that if I were to use fabric dye, would it yield the same results as the acrylic? 2. If I used glow in the dark tie dye paint (be it acrylic or fabric), do you think the rubbing alcohol would change it's glow in the dark effect? 3. What's the process for letting this dry?

Thank you for this. My son and I have recently taken up tie dying, it's a blast!! I have hundreds of acrylic paint bottles from painting rocks. My question.. does the paint smell like alcohol and does it have any reaction to the vinegar? Also, how long does it last in the jar and on the fabric?
@HanieBCreations
@HanieBCreations 4 жыл бұрын
It won't smell at all after you wash it. No reaction to vinegar. I have found the paint solution doesn't last as long as I originally thought so try to make only what you'll need. The color will last as long as anything else. Fades with washes. I wash all my clothes in cold water to preserve the color. Hope this answers your question. Have fun!
@HanieBCreations
@HanieBCreations 11 жыл бұрын
Yes. It should work. Just make sure you use a lot of white paint, and try not to dilute it with alcohol so much. You may end up with more stiffness than usual, but that should soften over time. If after you apply the white to the shirt you find it too stiff. Add the alcohol straight to the fabric, this will help remove that stiffness. Than just allow it to air dry. Hope this helps.

How do you get the colors to be darker? Or brighter?
@HanieBCreations

I would sometimes cheat. Meaning, add paint directly onto the fabric, pour the rubbing alcohol over it, and work it in, or massage into the fabric. You may notice more stiffy. It will eventually wash out. The other option is use the deepest or brightest colors. More paint, less alcohol.

I recommend you do the same. Have fun with it! 2- Again, try it! Never know till you try. 3- Just let the finished garments dry natural in the sunshine, and air. Also make sure to watch my latest video for setting the dye, once you have achieved desired results.

Hi. Thanks for asking. I cannot say for sure it will work with these fabrics. I certainly would not recommend you use a Fabric Paint mixed with Alcohol. If you wanted to experiment that's up to you. In this case, you might be better off just using a commercial brand Fabric Dye like Rit Dye for this project. Buy two bottles to make sure you have enough.

+Fadia Ademi Hi! Thanks for asking. No.. DON"T use HOT. COLD-COLD-COLD. Even if you don't set the dye, you can just wash in cold water with very light detergent, and let it hang dry. +Fadia Ademi Also, I think people are getting the RIT dye which is fine, but if you are using RIT, best to follow directions on the RIT box for how to DYE the fabric. With ANY tie dye project.. Allow it to dry in the sun before doing anything else to it. As I mentioned in another comment. Just washing in cold water will help preserve the colors, and keep them from fading.. Also use mild detergent and a cold water wash for all clothes you want to keep from fading

You will need to add textile medium to that acrylic paint because acrylic paint is not permanent on fabric. Overtime, it will fade. By adding textile medium to your acrylic paint, you won't have to worry about losing color.

You want to make sure your chairs paint doesn't rub off on someone's clothes if they should sit on it. @HanieBCreations
@HanieBCreations 9 жыл бұрын
Muniza Siddiqui Do you have glow in the dark acrylic paint? I cannot say how method in the video will work. What I would do if I were you is gather a sample piece of cotton fabric, twist in a rubber band. Paint the glow in the dark paint straight onto the area you want color. Use a lot of paint, really work the paint into the fabric. Let it sit for a minute or two. now pour rubbing alcohol on the area, work it in, and squeeze out the paint particles until you feel smoothness from the paint go away. Let the fabric sit in the sun with the rubber band still intact until dry. Remove the rubber band, and see what you get. If it works, than you can dye your T.Shirt in this way. Check my Tie Dye video playlist. I may have a video demonstrating this short process.

Muniza Siddiqui I have to commend you for paying such close attention! I'm glad you sent me the link to view the paint. It looks awesome! With that said, please experiment with that particular paint first. Check the consistency, if it's really thick than add a little bit of water to thin it down. Take a t-spoon size of paint couple drops of water (only if needed) apply to a sample t.shirt. Work it into the fabric. Than apply the alcohol. If the shirt is stiff in areas, it will soften after a couple of washes. It's usually not that stiff. If you are able. Get out a little fabric you don't want, and tie a rubber band in. Place paint into it, and let it dry. Take out the rubber band, and see how stiff it is. Than try it with alcohol, as I have done and see for yourself. Do this with regular acrylic paint if you have it. Always rinse in cold water. Before you start this glow -in-the dark. check my latest video kzbin.info/www/bejne/roemXoiwZ7aUhq8 if you haven't already. reverse tie dye, and acrylic paint. Because the thing to remember here is that even if you don't use alcohol, you are working with paint, not dye. So there is a different process because paint was not originally meant to be used in this way. Now as for using spray paint? I'm not at liberty to comment because I have not used spray paint at all. I have viewed other videos using this process, but I have no idea how it really comes out. I am not an expert with paint. I'm inventive, and I love to create. I can only tell you what I know works, because I make sure it will. If any time I am recording, and something goes wrong. I have to stop, and figure it out before I continue, or before I will publish it on youtube. Let me know how it goes. Please. AND DO experiment first. This looks like very fun, and nice paint. I would love to see how it all turns out!

Judy McDonald Hi Judy, Thanks for asking. I discovered that it does not store well. It's best to use it up as quickly as possible. I f you do have extra, and you want to keep it, for use later. At best it may last a few days. Try to mix up what you'll need. I have actually stored left over color in the containers shown, and I wound up adding more of alcohol and paint to make it more effective. Some colors did not store well at all. It had to be thrown out. Perhaps it had something to do with the way I had mixed it, the paint, or temperature of storing conditions. combo of all the above. Not sure. I say just experiment with it. Hope this helps. Let me know if you should have any more questions. Good Luck.

I doubt they'll be washed again, once they go back on the doll, so I'm not worried about much more than them not dying dark enough, and end up looking purple, instead of black, lol! I have about 25 min left, so I'll know soon enough!

I just dyed my shirt black using this method, I was wondering do I leave it to soak and wash it in the machine once its done soaking? or do I wring it out after its done soaking and let it air dry?

Congratulations! I'm so happy it worked out for you. It's always better to let it air dry in the sun first. Second set the dye using this method. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4Cakqqpe79pnKM Third ring out, and allow to dry in the sun again. 4th- Hand wash cold water- air dry. Hope this helps! Thanks for using this method. So glad to hear it worked out for you. HanieB.

Does this dye work on polyester?

I have found this to work BEST with cotton fabric. I experimented on a polyester apron, and discovered this specific process does not provide a good strong pigment. Instead, try this. Tie up the material, work the paint directly onto the fabric, and than squirt the alcohol onto the fabric over the paint. Go light on the amount of alcohol. Does that make sense? Play around it a little bit first on separate piece of polyester, or a tiny corner of the shirt to make sure you are satisfied with the process. Take your time. Let me know if you have any more questions.

HanieBCreations when I was at the craft store I found this paint for $5 a bottle that's about the size of a little acrylic. It was soft fabric "ink" by FabricCreations. All I had to do was dissolve it in alcohol and there were no lumps! I dyed my clothes in it and they came out beautifully! Two bottles was enough for a very strong color for 2 polyester flowy tops =)
