Once you have the color on your shirt exactly how you want it, than submerge into the vinegar solution, and allow to sit for one hour. The material dries rather quickly, so once the paint it's on there it really isn't going anywhere, unless you wash it, ( at which case will fade the color) OR soak it in bleach, (not recommended) As you may remember what happened to my cute little shirt I used as demonstration in this video. It's a tore up mess! haha. Yes fabric paints are expensive!
@theof56457 жыл бұрын
I have painted designs on shirts with acrylic latex paint years. Holds up as well, or better, than regular fabric paint. You want to dye the shirts then all you have to do is thin the acrylic latex paint . Soak the cloth in it, wring it out, dry it. And that's it. I like to thin mine down to about 10 parts water, 1 part paint. Have not a clue why anyone would use alcohol - unless they have a drink after.

You could also use a very fine muslin to strain the acrylic from the colour pigment .. & when you tip the first strained liquid into the first washed tub, it would be a good idea to wash both tubs so that you get rid of as much of the acrylic sediment as possible. This should give you a much more pure colour pigment at the end of the second straining. This was just my observation, not practice. :)

@HanieBCreations8 жыл бұрын
I don't think it will. Think about it... White generally will not cover over a darker color. You might lighten the purple with white, but it wont white it out completely. Might want to try bleach. Be careful with bleach as it could eat the fabric if left on too long. Also be prepared for the bleach to change the color rather than making it white. Good luck!

Can we use something else instead of rubbing alcohol?
@HanieBCreations10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your questions. First off-- alcohol acts in two ways with regards to this method.1. It helps the acrylic paint color absorb into the cotton or fabric, 2. It separates the color out from the other fibers in the paint. Anyone can apply straight acrylic paint to the fabric, however, what remains is stiffness. I have seen people use boiling hot water. I haven't tried that personally so I can't say weather it will work or not. Lets say you were to apply hot water, I would first tie up my garment. Apply the paint straight to the fabric, and work it in. Place it into a bucket, poor the hot water over the fabric. Allow to cool before touching, and wring it out. See how that goes. I discovered this alcohol method by experimentation using the sharpie pen science. I tried the sharpie, and learned that you had to use way too many in order to gain effects, and than the colors faded out fast. If you have the time to play around or experiment give the hot water a try. Please use caution, and have your mother or someone help you. Hope this helps. HanieB.

also! the fabric is 100 polyester.. so would the color stay in the fabric more since im using the paint? cos RIT dye doesnt stay well if its not cotton.
@HanieBCreations6 жыл бұрын
Right. I think I would just skip the use of alcohol and mix a little HOT water. Keeping more pigment from the paint will be a better match for polyester. You'll then notice more siffy's... BUT-- if it's too stiff, I'd just wash the garment a few times. I Tie Dyed a polyester apron, and just wound up applying straight paint first, than added a little alcohol to sort of dilute the color... Hope that makes sense.. Let me know if you have more questions.

I want to use acrylic paint to ombre dye a flat sheet, not the fitted sheet. It is a queen size. I am confused about ratios. For a large piece of clothing, would I need a whole bottle of acrylic paint? Also if the queen sized sheet has a printed pattern (sold that way) would diluted dye be able to cover the pattern?
@HanieBCreations6 жыл бұрын
The only way to cover the pattern would be to Bleach it out first, than Dye It. As for ratios-- I personally have always eyeballed whatever amount I needed . I have dyed Heavy Cotton Sweatshirts, and what I did was extract the color to desired richness, do a swatch test. I'd than keep adding Color & Alcohol as needed. If you are Dying Cotton Sheets than the fabric will absorb the color pretty fast. If I had to guess to mate, I'd say you will probably go thru at least one bottle of paint, and perhaps a few bottles of Alcohol depending on the size of the bottle. NOTE: I've never had to use more than one bottle of paint for Cotton fabrics especially. Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks!

If they are 100% cotton jeans it might ; I am not sure how well it will work, otherwise if at all. Sorry I don't have a better answer than this, but I've not tried it on jeans so I cannot comment. I will suggest sampling a section. If you are wanting a multi-color look to your jeans, I'd say just slap on the paint and let it dry. Use the brightest colors you can find, and less alcohol might help.

Hi! I would be doing this DIY soon, I just want to ask if the color fades away after a few washes in the washing machine. Will the paint mix with the other clothes if I wash it? Thanks.

There are steps you can take to Keep The Dye Fresh. See this vid> kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4Cakqqpe79pnKM To answer your question --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZOWdWmpf7Ksibc. All my Tie Dye Shirts all look the same after washing as did the day I Dyed them. Watch all my Tie Dye videos and you'll see. I've Tie Dyed Hoodies too kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHbZk2R6pLKZl6s Always use Cotton Garments for Best Results and ALWAYS wash in COLD WATER.

I loved the idea.. I made a rainbow spiral and i used profesional acrylic paint and nail polish remover since rubbing alcohol is not for sale in my country. It took a while but it seemed pretty good.. I unfolded my shirt and the result was amazing.. I let it dry and then handwashed it with cold water only.. The pattern faded for like 60%.. So sad.. :(

Cubedays Aw! I'm sorry to hear that. Did you soak the garment in the cold water/vinegar solution's?kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4Cakqqpe79pnKM. I am working on a new ideas for Tie Dye which doesn't involve using alcohol. Hopefully my new ideas will be useful to those who are unable to get alcohol in their country. Keep an eye out for new videos coming soon! Thanks for watching, experimenting and sharing results with us.

HanieB.(C.~)™reations Oops.. Now i know why it washed away.. I am so glad you responded to me because i need this shirt for a festival so i can try again tonight and actually soak it in vinegar/cold water this time.. You are a life saver.. And i love your creativity. One question though.. In my country we have vinegar for cleaning or cooking. You think it makes a big difference? (Maybe its an impossible question for you haha im sorry)
@HanieBCreations10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes the type of vinegar does make a difference. You will need to use white vinegar. Make sure you set your completed work of art in the sun to dry. Than set it with the cold water. If you don't have white vinegar, and you need the shirt. Just wear it before washing. I'm going to be doing another video soon that will show a different process without alcohol. Hope it all works out for you! Let me know how it goes. HanieB.(C.~)™

HanieB.(C.~)™reations So i wanted to give you an update since you take the time to help people out.. I dyed another shirt and i let it completely dry in the sun.. I just bought the right vinegar and made a mixture with salt and cold water and i soaked the shirt in.. Absolutely worked 100%!! So thank you for pointing out your video i totally didnt see that the first time.. It all worked out in the end.. So thanks a lot and have a nice day (p.s i still used nail polish remover which works fine if you just make sure there's no or little oil in it.. :) if you do use it with oil it will just make your colors a bit lighter.. Which gave me some cool effects using both)

Cubedays Wow! Thank you for sharing your discoveries. I really appreciate it, and I am sure others who read the comments will too. This sort of information is exactly what creating is all about. It's about branching out, and experimenting with someone else's ideas to see what you get. Polish remover without oil is acetone. I hope you wore gloves. Just use caution when working with chemicals, as you never know how they can re-act to each other. In this case it sounds as if it worked out well. I'm happy to hear about it. Also happy to hear how the cold water treatment worked well. I know it WORKS because it's an old secret housewives have used for generations. The main thing to remember is to hang dry in the sun first. I'm so happy you found a way to make it work. Thanks again for sharing. HanieB.(C.~)™.

Would this technique also work with Jacquard textile fluorescent paints? I asked the distributor and she wasn't very much help at all. She basically said that they weren't for dying, but the bottle says brief instructions for fabric use. Thanks in advance!
@HanieBCreations10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for inquiring. I've not ever hear of these paints before. I looked it up so that I could answer your question best of my ability. From what I read, it's a type of fabric paint. I'm really shocked that the distributor couldn't tell you more. If this is the case, and it's for fabric you may not need alcohol. However, as I tell everyone, who wants to try Tie Dye with Acrylic Paint using something else is that I discovered this process by experimentation. My answer to you is " Why not experiment with it?". Just place a small amount of paint onto a piece of fabric and let it dry. If the paint dries hard or has stiffness, than you know it's not going to be good for Tie Dye (by itself). Now...If you already know this, and you want to use this paint for Tie Dye. I would say do a second experiment by placing a small dab or so onto fabric, rub it in. Than douse it with alcohol, and twist. See what remains after allowing it to dry in the sun. Did the alcohol spread the color? Did it remove color? Did the color remain, but stiffness went away? Just see what happens. I wish I could give you a straight answer but honestly I'm not an expert on the variety of paint that is available today. Another thing I would suggest is looking at what is in the paint, and compare it to what is found in acrylic paint. If it's the same than just go ahead and apply my process for obtaining the color and have fun! HanieB. P.S. I would love to hear how it goes, so please don't forget to report back to me. Thanks again.

Thank you very much for your quick response. yes, the distributor has usually had very good insight with any questions about a product that I bought from them. I've been doing some experimenting with it and it seems like when I add water to it, it basically makes the fluorescent dyes really pastel which is not what I want at all. It's so hard to find a procion dye that is also a true fluorescent. Thanks for the ideas, I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes. Will be a challenge! I just don't want the paint to be hard on the fabric. I think I'm going to have to apply it directly, but I'll try with the alcohol!

You're welcome! I am amazed at how many people enjoy this process! It's my most popular video tutorial on youtube. I am impressed with the different ways people use the method. I'm going to be uploading a video soon on how to Tie Dye with Acrylic Paint without using the straining method. In the meantime you can check out something similar which might help with your experiment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqWVgIJ9n7KEj7s

Sure, why not? For best results use cotton, and really deep or bright pigmented colors. Don't think it works well on some fabrics. See my tutorial/video on dip dying. You will see more on how the colors turn out.
