What makes Hector an even better hero is that he wasn't a demigod but could still hold his own against Achilles
@WildMen44447 ай бұрын
Hector actually had divine heritage too. It just wasn't as close in generation as Achilles. Hector's great-great-great-great grandfather was a man named Dardanus who was a son of Zeus and Electra (the latter of whom is daughter of Atlas and Pleione). Both of these ladies are numbered among the Pleiades. Dardanus' wife Batea was a daughter of a man named Teucer whose father was Scamander (the God of the River Scamander) and a nymph named Idaea. So Hector actually has quite a few deities in his family. It helps to remember that basically every mythic Greek hero has family trees that look like this. Pretty much the Greeks believed that every royal family at this point in time were semi-divine super people. This is one of the reasons why so many city-states had their leaders claim descent from these heroes as it essentially brings divine legitimacy to whoever can prove he had some connection to the race of godlike heroes that once reigned. This is also why most of the heroes went on to be worshipped after death as communal ancestors with powers that could affect the whole community (and yes, such honors were paid to Hector too).

Scholars have noted that the Iliad is essentially a poem about having a good death (in contrast to the Odyssey which is supposed to be about having a good life). This is why the Iliad ends in a funeral whereas the Odyssey ends with a wedding. Hector's death is exemplary in how he faced his doom with courage. He went out gloriously and all the world remembers it

I feel like achiles victory over hector is always romanticized as a dominant victory but I’m sure in reality it was a Pyrrhic victory. Hector was a lot bigger, a lot more experienced and a lot older than Achilles. It would be nice if Achilles were depicted as the underdog and hector as Goliath, then Achilles victory and hectors death would be more worthy.
@WildMen44447 ай бұрын
I wouldn't say it was a pyrrhic victory. Dude was just fine after the battle. Both were the champions of their respective armies.
