From the version that I read in middle school, I recall the ending being a bit different. The husband’s 3rd wish was that he wished that he never got the monkey’s paw to begin with. This in turn caused him to wake back up infront of his son playing chess like in the beginning of the story, but the consequence is that the general dies on his way to the whites house, thus making it where the whites never got the paw.

The D'Jinn operate this way as well. You get *exactly* what you wish for. No more. No less. The play there or the "catch" is that you have to find a way to phrase your wish so that the consequence isn't a a dire one. Years back they had an X-Files episode featuring a D'Jinn who was trapped in a carpet and once unrolled and she was freed, they got wishes. Mulder finally figured it all out. Even the Outer Limits or the Twilight Zone did a wish episode like this years before that. A story like this with the moral of "Be careful what you wish for - you just may get it" is as old as time itself. So much so that I decided to try my hand at a Monkey's Paw fable of my own.

Either way as the husband try to stop his wife from opening the door, she pushed him aside and happily ran to the door, ignoring her husband’s cry. Desperate the husband grabbed the paw and wish his son to return to the grave, and just as the wife opened the door to only see a puddle of blood on the doorstep (and I think on the door too). The wife angrily yelled at her husband and began to cry in despair and grief that she was hysterical and had to be sent to a mental hospital for the rest of her life. We read this piece in 6th grade and the assignment on it was to re-write the ending from the son's perspective. I'll put it here--it was the first piece of thriller writing I ever wrote and I'm still quite attached to it. - To say that it had been painful would have been a severe understatement. I had never felt such pain, not when I had broken my leg as a young child, not being cut from my shoulder to my wrist by a stone that I had fallen on while playing with my friends 3 years later. Never. Then it had numbed; the pain was no longer a part of me, it was still there, but I was separate from it. I was surrounded by thick fog, and I *was* the fog. Perhaps it was all in my head, maybe there was no fog, but I did not care for I was fading--drifting into a blissful nothingness. "I wish my son alive," a quavering voice sounded in the darkness and seemed to pull me from a long, dreamless sleep. It echoed as if I was hearing it from a long distance. it was my father, and I wished to go to him. For the first time in what felt like years I truly thought. I thought of mother and father and of seeing their faces, now wrinkled with age. I wanted them, just to see them, to look into their eyes. But I couldn't; it was impossible. Two senses only had I regained. I could see and I could hear, and what I saw and heard terrified me. I did indeed wish to see my family, but I did not want them to come to me, yet that seemed probable for the bloody and decaying mass of flesh that was my corpse was digging free if it's grave, and I knew where it was intending to go. It was walking down the road to what had onece been my home, and I saw from its eyes though I had no control over it. I knew that it would drag the other Whites back to the grave, and being both dead, it would be as though we were alive to each other. I wanted nothing more than for them to simply have the sense not to open the door. I wished in vain however, they would not have wished me back only to leave the door closed to me. I knocked, and I heard my mother scream my name. I knocked again, and I heard my father called to her. My mother was scrabbling at the door, still screaming. Then I was gone. I was fading, drifting away, and there was nothing. I thought no more.

If the paw isn't inevitably malicious, I think the way that would most likely produce the intended results would be wishing for something that you can possibly acchieve through your own succesful efforts and to phrase in detail how it should happen. The more realistic, the better. Like "I really wish my boss would finally recognize all the good work I've been doing for the company and grant me a pay raise of [insert reasonable amount]." Wishing for a random stranger to give you money just to be kind is very unrealistic, because people generally don't do that for no reason. The result could be that you meet an insane madman. Or that something horrible happens before that, so that someone pities you so much that he gives you the 200 dollar to help you out. (E.g. your house burned down, you lost everything and can't afford food or shelter, so a friendly neighbor gives you what he can spare out of kindness). Thinking about it, the way you phrased that wish exactly fits what happenend in the story, provided the company was actually not responsible for the accident and under no legal obligation to pay anything.

If you said "I wished for a million bucks without consequences" will the monkey paw grant your wish?

@chrisrudolf98393 жыл бұрын
We don't know exactly why there are negative consequences and if they necessarily always occur, the legend said the creator of the monkeys paw wanted to prove that trying to cheat fate will always result in evil, but we don't know whether it is cursed to intentionally do something bad or if it just proves his point by people bringing those consequences upon themselves. Because people just think about what they want and not about how that should work and what consequences for themselves or for others could go with it. As the friend said, the paw doesn't just magic things into existence, it happens always in a natural way that could always have been a coincidence. So the more unrealistic and/or vague the wish is, the more likely the paw will twist it into something horrible that fulfills your wish to the letter, but not how you meant it. You getting a million bucks would obviously have a wide variety of consequences, good and bad ones for you and others - unless you fall into a state before in which you can do absolutely nothing with the money and no one else who is with you can use it either. Also, the money has to come from somewhere. With your phrasing, you'd probably fall into an abandoned mineshaft, wound yourself badly so you can't get out and find a hidden treasure with a million bucks down there shortly before you die of your wounds - your body and the treasure is never found, so your wish is fulfilled, you got a million bucks and you getting the money had absolutely no consequences.

It's not just the monkey's paw. There are all sorts of stories, from fairy tales for example, about people wasting three wishes because they didn't wish wisely. One is the tale about a husband wishing a sausage on the end of his wife's nose, then has to waste his last wish to get it off her. Another version is finding the two wishes turned out badly because you didn't word things carefully, and then wasting the last wish on wishing everything back the way it was.

People are so dumb in how they phrase their wishes. The phrasing is super important. Just look at the Wishmaster movies.
@moneda4u3 жыл бұрын
is not the phrasing, is how complicated the wish is. If you wish for something easy like orange juice, it wont be destructive because is easy to get. However, people wish for hard things like large amounts of money, fame or controlling other people. The hard wishes have consequences because hard things are not easy to get. Whatever you get must come from somewhere. The paw makes it happens, but it does not just fall from the sky. There are always consequences
@chrisrudolf98393 жыл бұрын
The story is supposed to have a religious/philosophical moral, it is not about a game of wits to see if you can outsmart a malicious magical object. The point this story is supposed to drive home is to be content with your fate and make the best out of it with the means you have at your disposal, instead of being greedy and wishing that fate just gave you what you wanted without you working out how to get it.

I felt the ending was missing.... I was actually still waiting for something until the video stopped. The man should have at least waited to see what came as his son. Would have made the story more interesting. And we never knew whatever happened to the monkey's paw! All together, it was a good story... Wanted it more scary.
@chrisrudolf98393 жыл бұрын
the original author was probably going for a semirealistic story, leaving entirely open whether the paw actually did magic or the son's death was just a very weird coincidence. Which is what the parents will wonder for the rest of their lives.

What was the last wish.....? And who was at the door at the end ? And what happened to the family and the paw? Can anyone answer these questions...
@sissysovereign12943 жыл бұрын
Their son was at the door. The reason why his parents, nor the audience/readers, never outright get to see the son at the end is because he wouldn't have looked the same as he did before his demise. He would've been a mindless shredded corpse at this point. The father didn't want his wife to see their son mangled like that, so he wished for him to be RIP in the cemetery again.
@chrisrudolf98393 жыл бұрын
@@sissysovereign1294 That is one possibility and the details are left open on purpose, which makes the story much more effective. The last wish is very clear, the father wishes the son should not be there, because he fears that it might be a vengeful ghost or that he might have been buried alive accidently (false death diagnosis on coma patients happened in victorian age) in his horribly wounded state and would come back in terrible pain and mad from the trauma just to die soon after. But what the actual consequences of wish two and three were is left open. It clashes with the friend's warning though that the things you wish for don't just appear, but happen naturally. A possibility would be that they were going to go insane and just believe the son was back, because he was already dead and him actually coming back was impossible even for the hand and the last wish lifted the insanity. Or they were imagining things and the hand had done nothing at all. Or he actually somehow was still alive (only in coma and buried alive or mangled corpse misidentified and something different had happend to him) and was going to come back and the man's third wish made him run away before the wife could unlock the stuck door.
