No words about the Saxons in Germany fighting Charlemagne?! This is just a history of early England…
@calcaleb70418 ай бұрын
Because it’ll show Christians in a bad light who killed defenseless pagan Germanic tribes children and women. 5000 were killed under Charlemagne

So, to simplify this a little bit easier. The Angles, Saxons, & Jutes were pre-Norse/Scandinavian. Their religious beliefs were brought to England with their migration. This is why the Celts & Anglo-Saxons were actually able to merge with the Norse in their invasions & settlements because they were basically the same. But the two cultures did split somewhere down the line even though they were the Danish - Norse. As far as William III goes he was Rollo, son of Ragnar. That is why it is why that piece of France is called Normandy. Or as it came through initially as Norse Land or North Man Land. Tell me if I forgot something plz.

The Anglo-Saxons were a West Germanic people. The Norse were a North Germanic people. They shared a number of cultural and linguistic characteristics because they both descend from an earlier common proto-Germanic culture. But, the Anglo-Saxons and Norse aren't the same. The Norse would settle large swathes of Eastern England much later on, and for a time England was part of a North Sea empire under a Norse king. William was not Rollo, but a descendant of Rollo. Rollo was probably Hrolf in his native tongue, who was given Normandy as a spoil in exchange for not continuing down the Seine and taking Paris. Hrolf and his men would have simply been overlords of a territory that consisted mostly of a pre-existing Romanized Gallo-Germanic population. So the Normans as a whole were not Vikings or Norse. Ragnar as we understand him probably never existed and was mostly a legendary figure, who may or may not have been loosely based on one or several historical people. Rollo was not the brother of Ragnar, and would not have lived at the same time as Ragnar, if Ragnar would have existed at all.

The Germanic tribes/people origin was modern day north of Germany, Denmark and South of Scandinavia(Norway and Sweden) enclaves of the north sea and the Baltic sea. Back then they spoke one language, same religion and culture ie. Proto-Germanic . During and after migration period, they moved further east, west and south. They displaced natives(Celts) and/or assimilated them into their culture, most to the south of Germany into east of Gaul. This migration period and thereafter, from Proto-Germanic languages evolved into three distinctive Germanic dialects over time defined as; 1) North Germanic (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian. These other three also come under North Germanic: Faroese, Icelandic, and Elfdalian) 2) West Germanic (English, German, Low-German, Dutch, Frisian, among others) 3) East Germanic (Gothic, Burgundian, Vandalic, Crimean Gothic) - East Germanic language is said to be extinct. Note: Low-German and Frisian of the West Germanic languages are still widely spoken in regions of north of Germany(country side) and around the regions to the north sea of Dutch Frisian Islands. Low German spoken today still has up to 60% of vocabularies spoken in North Germanic language today, most notably; Danish, Swedish and Norwegian.

My paternal ancestor is from Westphalia, more specifically Munsterland. Today, since my surname is so unique and rare ( all peoples with our last name on the Nederland and German side are related) so i have distant relatives on both sides that ive connected with and share the same history. Proud to have Saxon ancestry.

I am proud of being a Saxon. Not happy with the extreme German politics today, not at all, but at least with my connection to the past. You should look for pictures of the Fürstenzug in the Internet, the royal ancestors portraid on long wall. When I stood there last time I realized how peaceful they all have been portraid, even the foot soldiers. Saxons just want to live a good live in their peaceful land and they feel the need for some beauty and good company in their live. And peace and freedom of course, they don't like roman burocracy. Thats it. 😉 🥰 Saxons are among the most clever people in Germany today. Result of PISA tests. And they are the most supressed region by the German government and the media. That provides some glory too. You are getting the point I guess. 😂

Migration era / early medieval, my favourite historical period. But can you please use period accurate maps next time? Frisia did not even remotely look like the modern Dutch coastline. (It's a common mistake but it's also pretty obvious once you know what to look out for.)

The saxons are the Germans even up to the dutch border (see map). They are totally distinct from danish people. According to dna testing also a noteable distinct genetic group.

Nice vid. But you've missed a few points. The Saxons didn't have long boats with sails. And the Saxon realm on the mainland actually streched as far as East Netherlands. Where they stil have the Saksen Ros (Saxon horse) in many of the towns emblems.

The Saxons ( Angles etc) were not simply one tribe , it's a collective name for a people made up of different tribes. One of which were called the Waeclingae , which the Roman road Watling street is named after ( nobody knows what the Romans called it )
