The mere scraps of historical records from sub Roman Britannia to 1066 is so disappointing - because it appears to have been an amazing period. Yet the Doomsday Book (immediately after the Conquest) indicates that there was a deep understanding of detailed record keeping amongst whatever passed for the “Civil Service”. What happened to those Anglo Saxon records? Did the new Anglo Norman speaking rulers simply destroy them because they were written in (to them) unintelligible OId English? I often wonder if buried in a tomb somewhere there is a trove of Old English manuscripts just waiting to be discovered … but I know I’m probably only dreaming.

We still have many of them. Though they are probably scattered about. We do have living legacies though with the Laws Of King Alfred (English Common Law). influencing the legal system we have today.

About the only thing you’ve stated that’s half way true is lice. People did take steps to be clean as much as they could for the time period. But nobody would have noticed really.
