I first found your videos a few years back when I was procrastinating from my final exams. Now, this bloody pandemic and your fantastic videos have given me the push I needed to get into hobbyist electronics for myself. Thank you for your fantastic content Darren, and I shall definitely grab one of your kits when I can figure out how to use em. Cheers and keep up the fantastic work.

What is the name of the 6-pin connector you bought to connect the cable to the console?
@cleandave
@cleandave 6 жыл бұрын
Really like the 3D printed part plus the ability to run in my car on 12 volt system. What has me really confused is trying to figure out why your first step was bridging the on-off switch only to add a cutout later... you could have just soldered the wires straight onto the boards built in on-off switch you bridged to begin with. Not only would it turn the console on and off, but it would not have hot 12 volts going through the small switch. It would be a signal wire super low power like the factory wanted. Plus it's basically just extra work and more connections to eventually have problems. Effective use of add on switch would only be better if used to cut out the 110 before the first inverter. Not at all trying to bash or hate, just perspective. I learned and will probably use this type of setup for hooking up my Dreamcast in the car. I do think it is overall a great mod! Cheers

You're absolutley correct sir! I regret filming it the way I did. I did it that way for simplicity so beginners can follow along, but the way you mentioned is the way I personally do it so I think I'll remake the video and post it again. I point the instructions to this video, so I'll send all the buyers of my kit to the new one.

They should make a network adapter for Dreamcast with an SD to play games from it, would be great idea, also they could replace the network port with a new one, and they should make a Sega Saturn 1GB ram cartridge or something like that with an SD slot in, so it can run games from it, will be awesome.

Why are you not installing an internal 100-230v step down to 12v so you can just as easily reuse the same figure 8 230v power cord? Id expect there is enough room for that to fit without an issue, and theyre about $6 delivered to Australia.

Is there any way that this mod could be changed or modified so that the output of the pico psu could just use a standard figure 8 power connector?
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 жыл бұрын
Not really, the PICO needs 12V DC and the figure 8 cable from the wall is anywhere from 100-240V AC. It's this conversion that is what the external 12V 5A power supply is for. You could hide it inside the console if there was room I guess, but generally the decent ones at 5A are quite large.

The Japanese Dreamcasts are great, especially an early revision. The parts for the kit are quite expensive, especially the PICO power supply. I'm still getting pricing options from various suppliers. I want the kit to include everything so it's easy for the installer. Under $50 AUD

I know you say use a 5A brick since 3A is too close, but I happen to have a 12V 3A laying around and the Dreamcast PicoPSU kit you linked comes with a 12V 3A anyways. How bad could a 3A be? Would it just power off/restart or possibly damage a component? I'd prefer to just use a 3A since I plan to do two mods and that will save me abit of money.

3A is more than enough for any system. GDEmu does not need anywhere near that much power. Infact GDEmu pulls power from the 5v rail, which never pulls more than 1A max. You don't even need the 12v pin connected when using GDEmu
