The reason for the octopus in the hockey game is that it was tradition to throw a live or dead octopus on the rink. if memory serves the redwings did it a lot.

It's in fact specifically a Detroit thing since they had won the Stanley Cup in the minimum of eight matches (if I recall correctly), spawning the tradition

8:45 The Legend of the Octopus is a sports tradition during Detroit Red Wings home playoff games involving dead octopuses thrown onto the ice rink. The origins of the activity go back to the 1952 playoffs, when a National Hockey League team played two best-of-seven series to capture the Stanley Cup.

There actually is quite a bit to say about the CD-i, since it wasn't just supposed to be a games console, but a multimedia device that could use "Green Book" Compact Disc Interactive discs for software (both for entertainment and education) and movies in addition to uncompressed digital audio. Some "CD-i Ready" discs even allowed room for both redbook audio that can be played on a standard CD player and video content that could be played on a CD-i player, similarly to Phillips' earlier "CD Video" CD/LaserDisc hybrid format. It was basically a case of Phillips being way too ambitious about the CD format and suffering as a result.

I have a theory as to where the puck being an octopus came from. The octopus being the puck could be a reference to the “Detroit octopus throw”. In 1952 during the third game of the final series against the Montreal Canadiens, Pete Cusimano, an east side fish market owner, celebrated the first Red Wing goal by throwing an octopus onto the ice.

Shouldn't it be "The Sega Mega Drive, also known as the Sega Genesis"? Sega Mega Drive is the console's official original name, used in Japan and Europe, and was only changed in the United States due to unspecified reasons, but it's believed to be due to a trademark dispute around a US manufacturer of storage devices called "Mega Drive Systems Inc."

@@Fanatic_Foremem But it's not the console's official name, it's just a regional name. It's not even a "Famicom/NES" scenario where 90% of the world had the NES and it was a radically different design in many ways, they just changed the name a bit because of copyright.
@AlexTenThousand

The octopus is likely a reference to a tradition the fans of the Detroit Red Wings. Red Wings fans will throw an octopus on the ice during key games in the post season or historically important games (first game in the new arena for example.) The origin of which came from the 50's? When the team needed 8 more wins to become the Stanley Cup champions, 1 win per leg, and the tradition was born.

There is another notable change in the west in Phantasy Star 2. When the cast is fleeing from the explosion of the space station they are saved by a space pirate named Tyler in the English release however in Japan they all die and simply awaken at a cloning station. Even in Korea where Japanese companies aren't allowed to sell stuff so they usually make a deal with Samsung or someone to sell it for them rebadged with weird names like Super Aladdin Boy, and Gamboy, and various other weird names depending on the console. They still put the original Mega Drive name on them with the renamed print next to it.

It's a modified version of M.U.S.H.A./MUSHA Aleste's intro! I really recommend you giving it a try if you like shoot-em-ups, it's one of the best in the Genesis library and has an amazingly rocking FM Metal soundtrack, which is even more impressive considering how early it came out on the console's lifespan! I just recommend you not trying to buy a physical cart of the US version, though, since it's wallet-murderously expensive... Thankfully it's available on the Japanese Genesis Mini's library, since M2, the amazing folks behind the machine's top-tier emulation, now fully own the rights to the franchise which it belongs to! :D
