i have several of those carts. Funny story is I bought both Hard Corps and Bloodlines brand new sealed in box for about $20 each (they were heavily discounted before collecting days) well after the Genesis had ended in the early 2000's. I can't even remember what retailer I got them from. I took them to our family mountain cabin where we played our retired game systems. I took them back home this year and beat them on every mode possible and can say they easily are 2 of the best games for the Genesis. I agree with you guys in that Hard Corps is hands down the best of Contra and also my favorite Genesis title. This is coming from an OG Genesis owner from 1989!

Great list! Genesis was my first and most nostalgic system. I collect loose carts to save money but have amassed a very robust collection of about 240 titles including most of the expensive ones such as Crusader of Centy, Musha, Punisher, and Trouble Shooter.

Side fact for people collecting carts only: they are the same size as cassette tapes. I made a game holder based on a wall mount cassette display. It holds 100 games, with most labels readable. Great way to collect and display on the cheaper side. I do go CIB, but some just aren’t worth full price. Those go in this display.

No shit, why didn't I think of that. My collection is mostly CIB but I've got a few loose carts. I have one of those old school cassette drawers, you know the classic one I'm talking about with the fake woodgrain, same as those VHS drawers everyone had. It is full of my old cassettes from when I was growing up in the 90s though. Speaking of VHS though, in the same vein as the carts to cassettes comparison, VHS is basically the same size as longbox games. Those old VHS holders work mint for Sega CD, Saturn, and PS1 Longbox titles, that's how I have my collection stored. I've got one of those carousels that spin, one side's Playstation, the other's Sega.

I don't know who would think you guys don't play games. I remember your light gun series, and that's my fav genre, and when you guys did the light gun setup segments, I said to myself: These guys are Dedicated. I still play arcade shooters regularly (been playing Silent Scope trilogy the last week trying to beat my own high scores, etc), but I quit using a gun when I got rid of my Trinitron years ago due to space. You guys are the Real Deal. Keep it up. BTW nice Genesis games there CIB. I have 7 of the 10 and I stopped collecting for Genesis I have too many games.

I love the light guns games as well. I sold my Dreamcast guns and games for a similar reason. I don’t want to deal with a crt and they can be expensive now. I got most of the really good ps3 move shooters now and I’m working on the Wii original shooters (I’ll be honest though, the graphics on the Wii games can be a bit rough.)

Gunstar is just a little bit more accessible of a game. It’s more forgiving with the health, weapon combo is pretty simple to pickup, and more flexible with level select is nice too. Hard Corp is HARD and that’s what you guys like! Just not surprised that Gunstar has more curb appeal to more people.

I started collecting Genesis 15 years ago. Wish I would have done CIB but I decided to go cart only. The reason is because the boxes take up space. But yeah I agree Contra Hard Corps is phenomenal.

Great collection and some bangers here. My most expensive is contra hard core, and it is so crispy and in great condition. It is cib. Gun star heroes doesn't have the manual. Also habe lightening force is missing the manual, too. Those are most expensive games. I collect both cib and loose. I have 212 games, and 93 are loose, and 119 are cib or item and box.

I've got an extensive Genesis collection, but I'm lacking pretty much all of this list except for Streets of Rage 3. I really want to get my hands on quite a few of the ones featured but I can't justify paying market price. Just doing a quick mental inventory, I came up with Phantasy Star 2, Demolition Man, Comix Zone, and Rocket Knight Adventures being pretty heavy, around the $100 mark CIB. There's probably a few more that I'm forgetting, I don't have my collection in a state where I can look it over right now.

My most expensive mega drive games are Battletoads, Robocop 3, Ghostbusters and Zombies (Ate My Neighbours). I also have Gunstar Heroes, but in the UK there is a compilation cartridge (Like the Mega Games/6 Pak) that includes Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, Flicky and Gunstar Heroes that goes for much less than the game on its own - when I got it boxed without manual for twenty pounds I had to check that it was a genuine compilation Sega released in the UK.

It is a shame that Metal dragun did not get a bit more development for the visuals and controls. There are examples of games on the genesis that understood the importance of strafing movement for top down shooters. Granada is a really obscure mech/tank shooter that features it. Gargoyles and Contra Hard corps both got recent releases on switch. So there are options to play these games that were not available even two years ago. I acquired most of these over the years cartridge only, but that makes it easier to pop them in and play.

The interesting part is that the first 8 are all within $60 of each other. Then the last two jump up exponentially. I guess that's because this is not a list of the most expensive games in general but a list of expensive games in your collection. Meaning that most games in your preferred genre max out on average between $100-$160. Just interesting.

That's kind of funny as my Genesis collection is also 100% CIB for whatever reason. Well, minus one where I got such a good price on Master of Monsters for a loose cart I couldn't say no... but otherwise I pick them up CIB. Maybe because Genesis is still relatively affordable/easier to find CIB vs other platforms like NES/SNES, which just have insane CIB prices and had their cardboard boxes tossed.

Much later game releases were in cardboard boxes. I think 1994 or maybe 1995 and later . Also a company called Majesco licensed and re-issued quite a few games only in cardboard boxes that were previously in the plastic clamshell boxes including Castlevania bloodlines Contra hard-corps, some of the Disney games and the desert, strike jungle and urban games that were originally from electronic arts

The cardboard box version of Castlevaina Bloodlines has never been worth 200.00. The clamshell version is the one that is the one that holds the value. Your Punisher game the last I checked a few months ago. Anywhere from 700.00-900.00 with the tattoo. The price could have changed since then, but I know a few months back it was selling an easy 700-900 with an unopened tattoo.

The arcade version of the Punisher is the original version of the game so it isn't a port. Game prices have to do with rarity not how fun the game is.

I prefer contra but considering no contra game has reached the same accolades as gunstar heroes critically, the hot take is actually to say gunstar heroes is "Not even" close to contra. If I said Silent Hill franchise is better than RE, that's a hot take considering the objective metric of comparison we have is that most silent hill games are critically and commercially poorly received.

I remember Michael Jackson's Moonwalker being the first game I ever saw on a Genesis. My friend had it. I was blown away to see he had something other than Nintendo and the graphics looked so much better. I must have been about 6 or 7. This was before Sonic the Hedgehog when everyone went out and bought a Genesis (myself included). So much nostalgia for Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. So disappointing that the zombie levels don't have Thriller as the song. Instead it's Another Part of Me. Although I heard there are some copies of the game out there that do have Thriller. I remember the first time I caught that shooting star in the 2nd zombie level and turned into Mecha Michael Jackson or whatever they call it. I had the game for a long time by that point and finally happened to remember to jump back to catch that shooting star. So F'n cool when you do!

Sorry guys, Gunstar Heroes is better than Contra Hard Corps. It has better replayability with multiple difficulty options, two shooting modes, the ability to choose the starting levels in any order, and the ability to create 16 different guns. The level design also has more variety with the Dice Palace and the shmup stage being the prime examples of it. Finally, Gunstar Heroes has better boss fights. No boss fight in Contra Hard Corps come close to the awesomeness that is Seven Force!
