The 00:33 buildup up to the main theme is amazingly smooth, and it got luckily stuck in my head since 17 years. As many of us right now, I can't believe such game has had no future plans, because it's one of the few games that aged so smoothly that I could get my friends onto it. Youre Back! Ristar have a really amazing Soundtrack! Unfortunately the PCM driver make the samples a bit Noisy but the composition/instrument patches are simply GREAT! Great record DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL! Still hope to hear a proper After Burner II record. This game use Samples rendered with the PSG channel. Some emulators make the Samples out of tune and the song Red Out sounds more like Arcade on the console with a jet made by the natural ym2612 noise that only consoles and the Genesis plus GX Wii can emulate. keep it up :B
@elgoog-the-third6 жыл бұрын
It's really more the small sample size. You can play crystal-clear audio from a MegaDrive cartridge, but it needs precious cartridge space.
@cometkuma4 жыл бұрын
@@elgoog-the-third Late as heck but the Ristar samples are actually pretty high quality for a genesis. The way samples are loaded and compressed just makes them sound.. not that good. If you rip the samples directly from the game it sounds great!
@AnnoyedArt12563 жыл бұрын
@@elgoog-the-third It's that and also that Ristar uses a sound driver called SMPSPlay that uses the main CPU to mix two sample channels on the YM2612 DAC. That's good and all but it has to update the FM and PSG channels alongside mixing two sample channels so it has to switch between updating the FM and PSG channel and mixing and updating two sample channels on the DAC so it produces some "gaps" in the sample channel and that results in crackling drums and stuff like that.
@BurnedNoodle2 жыл бұрын
@@AnnoyedArt1256 how does mixing sampling channels work? do you have a link explaining it?
@AnnoyedArt12562 жыл бұрын
@@BurnedNoodle To mix something like two unsigned samples to the YM2612 DAC you would do this: 1. calculate the first and second channels output. 2. add the two sample outputs together from step 1 and then average them out (divide by 2). 3. set the YM2612 DAC's value by using the mixed sample output from step 2.

Nothing's perfect, but they were listing innocent things they remember as a kid, and you drop the damn "And blacks didn't have rights" card. Fucking fast food, and Christmas, and you bring that shit in, there's a time, and place for that talk, and honestly, you're must not be able to read a room well, because this ain't it. anyone can do that, you know. First time hearing this, and wow, quite a different vibe from a lot of MD games. Such a range of instrumentation, really makes the most of the soundchip. I'd previously wondered about the value of, say, trying to make a sound upgrade mod for the Atari ST and other machines with a YM2149 or AY8910 which would substitute it with one or other OPN chip (2608, 2610 etc) that include the same core but add FM and PCM. The 2612 being part of that family but dropping the 2149 part because of still keeping the SMS chip. Didn't know whether it would really be that big an improvement up until now, especially in terms of offering a wider range of tones and more realism in the instrumentation vs what a skilled programmer of the PSG could achieve. Mind definitely changed now with a demonstration of what's achievable by someone applying similar skill to programming the equivalent system (there's some parts here clearly using the SN7 alongside the 2612, the distinctive tone stands out... But the rest of it is very much FM/PCM that couldn't be easily made with square wave manipulation)
