1) The bits thing is mostly about addressing. 8 bits is 256 addresses, 16 bits is 256x256 addresses. The NES, since it could only tell apart 256 at a time, had to draw graphics in tiles, a ~240x256 tile grid that itself had to hold a series of pixels with a palette that could cap at 256 different values (The NES only had like 50 colors thogh). 16 bits allows for values up to about 65,000, which means you could index more colors, subdivide the screen better (or even direct-map pixel by pixel), and so on. More bits means less likelihood that you'd have to resort to tricks like the tiling or the bizarre palette manipulation that the NES did, which saves effort for the machine. The NES is well-known not to be able to draw everything on the screen at all times, after all. 8 bits is 256, 16 bits is ~65,000, 32 bits is >4 billion, and 64 bits is >16 quintillion values. At some point it just stops being necessary is why the graphics of 64-bit consoles didn't really improve over 32-bit, and for anything non-3D 16-bit was honestly enough. 16-bit color is usually enough, and you can get away with even 10, 12 bits for sound. That's why the 16-bit era in part is so fondly remembered, it's because that was the time that performance did make better games. Once 32-bit started and the extra power went into gimmicks (if you count 3D as a gimmick) then people started realizing that bits weren't everything. 2) SNES vs. Genesis on processing is actually a famous computer engineering example on how megahertz isn't everything. The Genesis clocks about twice as fast, but the instruction set on the SNES was more complex, so in the same clock cycle SNES could be doing something that took Genesis two, three, or more cycles. When you actually normalize those values for actual instructions executed per second (AKA how much work the thing was actually doing) SNES actually beats Genesis slightly on the average. Genesis is that guy who seems to work faster because he turns up twice as many times in your office, that's all. 3) SNES audio is almost legendary, 8 channels sure but what it had was a 16-bit DAC (Genesis uses a 9-bit DAC with modulation tricks) which means that the sound it was capable of was much clearer and smoother (same with colors, more bits means that the output is more precise and closer to what was intended). The SNES outputs this sound at 32 kHz, which means anything at 16 kHz or less comes out just as intended. This encompasses almost all of the audible spectrum which caps at roughly 20 kHz. To compare this 32 kHz sound, CD quality, which is considered to be a yardstick for "clear sound" is at 44 kHz, allowing people to hear up to 22 kHz. I may not have grown up with the SNES but just look for old SNES soundtracks and you will hear the difference. Some SNES soundtracks beat a lot of modern video game music, just listen to the original Final Fantasy games on the SNES, especially FFVI. I mean, the SNES came out after the Genesis. they had time to really pick their hardware and make sure they could do the 16-bit console right. The Genesis suffers from having to be the first popular 16-bit console (there were others like Turbografx16 but who cares) and it held out for as long as it could, because every month the SNES wasn't out was a plus point for SEGA. But once the SNES came out, the lead was over.
@AximVidya6 жыл бұрын
Great writeup of their incompetence, just a minor note, as far as I'm aware we aren't using the full 32 bits for color even today, just 24 bits, the last 8 bits are used for alpha (transparency information). And more than that is really only used in some professional graphics applications and in HDR photography.
@afelias6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, similar to moving to 64-bit PCs didn't really improve most programs because 32-bit values were fine. It was still important to move to 64-bit so we could address more memory (4 GB vs 18 million TB) without memory tricks. An improvement in the "bits" is usually for one reason or another but won't improve the whole thing. What I was talking about 16-bit being enough for 2D I was talking more about being able to map pixels with 16-bit values rather than assigning them colors in 16 or 32 bit. And yeah, 32-bit color. We won't need more bits because we can represent just about anything discernible with it; more bits will just produce "the same colors" to our eyes. I don't even mind DFF not knowing how to interpret console specs or understand the technical aspect of The Bit Wars, if anything it's important to remember that The Bit Wars was essentially a marketing trick and most people didn't know at all what a bit was. So it was wholly appropriate. I just wanted to talk about it partly to add to what they've said, and also because I wanted to defend the SNES v:

ɥsɐɹƆ Word, dude. Ultimately, for me, it comes down to Super Mario World, those first two DK Country games, and Kirby Allstars... there were games I loved on Genesis, but those games were my favs, and continue to be up into my adulthood. In my early-mid 20s, I used to drive around listening to the DK Country 2 soundtrack in my car, which is still my favorite video game soundtrack, by far.. ahh, the memories.. I just realized how empty my life is without a SNES.. ✌🏼
@nikolademitri7316 жыл бұрын
mayrana2 Pretty much. I think of other games too, but they weren’t really exclusive to Sega, despite the fact that I associate them with that system.
@nikolademitri7316 жыл бұрын
Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin As a rivalry, I definitely think it was a bigger debate as to which was better, and it was a hell of an era. That’s probably my favorite game system rivalry tbh, plus that was the “peak” of my childhood years, as I wasn’t old enough to get into games till the later years of SNES v Genesis. SNES will always be my favorite system, with my favorite games, that generates the most nostalgia, but I agree that PS1 v N64 was the best video game rivalry... ✌🏼
@nikolademitri7316 жыл бұрын
Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Ah, I gotcha. The final game rivalry I was actually immersed in was your first (GameCube, X-Box, PS2), and what a time that was! I got a PS2 the day it came out in America, and for a brief period of time, I was the coolest kid in my class. Nobody believed me when I announced I had one, bc they were instantly all sold out. My grandma, bless her heart, waited outside K-Mart from like 4am, or something insane like that, and spent like a quarter of her social security check for that month. Eventually, we got a GameCube and Xbox, but PS2 was my shit. Idk if it was the best of the systems.. it had some really irritating glitches, but being able to play PS1 games on it too, damn that was awesome. Anyway, I’ll stop reminiscing.. After that, I just fell out of video games. By the time the next systems came along, I was 18-19, and too busy being a hippy, working full time, and taking some college classes here and there. At some point, when I was around your age actually, I pulled out my old SNES, and just ended up going back to the games of my youth, except this time I was playing them stoned (I highly recommend DK Country 2 with a head full of acid). I digress. On a total side not, I just came to the realization that kids born in ‘95 are 23 now, which makes me sick. I’d sell my soul to the devil to be 23 again, that was one of the best years of my life, by far. Be sure to make it one of your’s too, bc soon your 20s will be over, and life doesn’t suck, but you’re only that young once, and you don’t want to waste it! Ok, I’m done being an old man now.. ✌🏼

Here's a technical description of what "Blast Processing" is: _Marty Franz [Sega technical director] discovered that you could do this nifty trick with the display system by hooking the scan line interrupt and firing off a DMA at just the right time. The result was that you could effectively jam data onto the graphics chip while the scan line was being drawn - which meant you could drive the DAC's with 8 bits per pixel. Assuming you could get the timing just right you could draw 256 color static images._ -- Scott Bayless (Senior Producer at Sega of America between 1990 and 1994)

Oooo Game nerd hype! I personally have to give it to SNES but SEGA had its positives.. I don't give a fuck, but the music for the Genesis was alright. The SNES had more polished and produced music, but I like that more distorted and harsher sound. That's probably my bias to my love for distortion, but oh well lol The music to Doom was definitely bad for the Genesis, but I still liked lot of it. Sonic is awesome too. But SNES wins over practically 75% of everything else. It basically gave the premise of what console gaming was meant to be.

Road Rash for the PlayStation 1 is one of the best games ever made. The game play was like nothing I'd ever seen before, the artwork was better than I'd ever seen, but the music was life changing. I would leave the menu up, pressing a button every few minutes, just to hear the soundtrack. There were four Soundgarden songs, before anyone except those living in Seattle had heard of them, like Rusty Cage, Outshined, etc. Sony/A&M Records really fucked up by not releasing an Official Soundtrack for that game. As I said they had Soundgarden but they also had Paw, Hammerbox, Therapy?, Monster Magnet, and Swervedriver. *FUCKING AMAZING* bands in the mid 1990s. And they pissed it all away.

Personally owned and love to both but if I had to pick one, Reliability - Tie Controller - Sega Graphics - Nes Sound - Nes Music - Sega Games - Tie Never had any issues with either for liability, the original Genesis controller was a perfect fit for the hands, in pretty much every game that was available on both systems, Nintendo looked better. Although, I will say that there were Some that were available for both that ran better on the Sega. The Nintendo had a much better sound. There was more separation and the instruments sounded more realistic. But I still give the music to Sega because there were so many titles with such amazing soundtracks. But at the end of the day the games are what matters and I have to put it at a tie. Super Mario world was absolutely amazing but I can’t begin to tell you how many hours I spent enjoying the hell out of sonic 1, 2 and three. To complicate matters, Nintendo has a link to the past which is one of the greatest games ever made i if not the absolute greatest. They also had starFox which was a Ton of fun back then and of course the first super Mario kart. But let’s be fair here and recognize that sega had some really weird titles like toe jam and Earl as well as Moonwalker and crue pinball that were just ridiculously fun and so unique.

Listenning to Paul talk about the difference between Mario and sonic kind of makes me sick lol Sonic's speed was a marketting gimmick. If you actually compare pixel to pixel they're basically the same speed. Sonic is bigger in his frame so he's harder to control at high speeds, and while some Mario levels don't lend themselves to raw speed the same can be said of sonic. There are at least as many tedious platforming sections in sonic. I think Paul's rose tinted goggles are in full effect. Honestly i think there are more levels that let you go fast in Mario world then sonic. Hearing Paul boast about sonics reminds me of poochy from the Simpsons.

I prefer the SNES library but the Genesis had the shooters. SNES had some of the best games ever - SMB World, Super Metroid, Street Fighter 2 Turbo was the better version, Sim City with its Nintendo touches was amazing. Chrono Trigger - Earthbound - Secret of Mana - Final Fantasy 2 and 3 are still at the top of the RPG heap. Legend of Zelda LTTP - do I even need to say anything ??? Super Castlevania IV edges out Bloodlines IMO - although both are amazing games.

to be fair the bits dont really refer to the graphics but the word-size. a 16-bit console could process data much more complex than an 8 bit console, of course some of that complexity goes to the graphics, but it really affects everything. now we have 64-bit processors in our computers, and that seems to be enough to process pretty much everything we need. so there's no need for any console to brag about that because at this point it's meaningless....but back in the day it made a huge difference.

I think when someone says they like the genesis better it's not because they think it sounds objectively better but probably just either a personal preference for it or maybe more likely it's what they grew up on. Nostalgia often has a way of making people stubbornly prefer whatever they grew up with even if it's objectively worse than another version of it.

Genesis first came with Altered Beast which was the one my mom bought me. After Sonic came out they started shipping it with that.

It wasn't a contest the SNES quashed the GENESIS in my mind. Obviously I was a Nintendo player at that time. All joking and posterioring aside the Genesis did have the premiere X-Men title(s) until that Capcom game came out. I'd still like to have a copy of those two titles. It had Spinball, which is still one of my favorite games from that time. A few great titles cannot sway my bias! The Nerd settled this argument years ago.

If you were going to get copyright striked for video game music, that would happen to LPers in every episode they released.

If you have a mint NES or Genesis now days, they are worth more money now than they were when they came out.

Irrational Geographic I can imagine. I think if you went to a gaming museum, you'll see both in there, guaranteed

Also, Paul, you got Sonic Spinball confused with Sonic 3D Blast. 3D blast was the isometric 3D-ish game. Spinball was a 2D pinball game in the same style as the casino level from Sonic 2, although not quite as good.

Intro definitely better than the new Thundercats intro.
