You get points in this game towards leveling up from uncovering map tiles (1 point) and opening presents (2 points). One strategy is to open all the presents on the first two or three levels to get points and also identify them. If you get a bummer or randomizer, just start over until you don't. That way you'll have a good head start.

Definitely a good strategy, but it's a trade-off: do you spend the time now and have an easier run ahead of you, or do you think "fuck it, I'll identify what I can and spam my presents if I'm in a tough spot and am probably dead anyway"? The latter is more reckless and risky but I imagine most people prefer to play it that way.

I wouldn't be surprised regarding leveling up in a tornado. I came across an interesting quirk in one playthrough of this game. My character actually started leveling up at the same time I opened a total bummer. You usually can't do anything about that, but I could actually open the menu after the health depleted, but the fireworks were still going. If you eat good food, fudge sundae, or drink rootbeer in that moment, you end up not dying. I've only ever seen it once. Never had anything like that happen again.

The only difference between tomatoes and slingshot is the range. They will kill everything except for the cherub's, but it will take multiple hits for the later enemies. They're best used on weak enemies such as devils, boogeymen, gerbil in wheel, hula girls and bees (but not the harder ones.) And yes, they will kill the moles but it's not recommended at all. You can only hit them when they briefly pop out of their holes, and it takes 4 hits.

I think some people don't like this game because it's too slow paced and there isn't enough action. So basically, it's the people who like constant action, noise and shit flying around everywhere who don't like it. And yes, the whole cartoon style probably plays a big part in it as well. This might not be true in every single instance, but I think for the most part this is exactly the reason. For the rest, my guess is they just don't find the gameplay to be fun.

How to use Tomatoes: Hold down the action button and use the D-Pad to aim where they go and Toejam/Earl will throw them continuously until the Tomatoes run out. Seeing Mike button mash to throw the tomatoes was absolutely painful.
@mikematei6 ай бұрын
Sorry I didn’t know how to throw tomatoes. I deserve to be beaten with a stick for that one.
@lonewanderer79266 ай бұрын
@@mikematei I don't know about the stick, perhaps have to drink nothing but tomato juice for a week as penance would be more fitting lol Seriously though, it's an old game and, yeah, to be fair, the aiming and firing is jank. However, learning to use the Tomatoes/slingshot is very useful especially if you play as Earl who can't move as fast as Toejam and you need to clear enemies when you can't run past them and it nets you bonus XP for every enemy you defeat. Earl runs are way more difficult so if you want a challenge, definitely play as him. When using the tomatoes it's best to use them from the relative safety of the narrow paths that build off of the larger landmasses as the enemy AI has trouble pathing onto them. The only exceptions are the flying enemies like the Bees or Cupids. To deal with Cupids, you have to collide with them using the spring shoes to jump up and knock them out of the air or with the Icarus Wings while flying. You can even do it with the super high-tops if you can time a jump over an obstacle (water, space gaps) and managed to collide with the cupid while it is over it, but that's definitely a situational thing and rarely occurs. Another bit of good news, yes, you can pop the hula dancers too for only 1 tomato hit. In the video you asked if the mailbox mimics can be defeated. Yes, they can be, but it takes a lot of hits to do it. The trade off is, unlike other enemies, they do not respawn. And, yeah, enemies do respawn after a while. I believe food respawns randomly too after a bit. The big opera singer is very valuable in the higher levels as she can clear all enemies on the screen for 4 bucks AND she follows you, albeit at a slow pace, but it's definitely worth bringing her along if you can. As a bonus, all of the enemies she pops, you get the XP for it. So, yeah, save up if you can for her. For the Jetpack Santa, you literally have to sneak up on him by using the tiptoe function when holding the action button with no presents active and you have to sneak up on him from behind otherwise he sees you and takes off. When he looks up from his bag, stop moving and wait for him to continue rummaging through his pack. Keep sneaking until you come right up on him and touch him and he'll scare, drop anywhere from 2-4 presents and then take off. I hope these hints are useful if you ever play TJ&E again on an Earl run so it's not as frustrating and bit more enjoyable.
