I dunno, I think the positive reviews of Tom and Jerry back then were well deserved. The game tried something completely different in a time where virtually every single cartoon licensed Master System game was a bog standard platformer. It's *very* difficult and requires some pretty hardcore memorization to get through the levels, but it made for a fun rental. It also contains a Sonic and Opa-Opa easter egg in the city level which is pretty cute.
@Hektols3 жыл бұрын
Agree, with so many platformers around this game was quite innovative, a chase game were you were the chaser. It was not a platformer game that used the cartoon characters, it was a game that recreated the cartoons.

That baffled me too, but oh well... haven't played Tom & Jerry SMS or Jungle Book SMS but they don't look bad from what he showed... Could of shown better visual representations on why the games were bad as well, imo. I feel like arcade games for the most part are subjective. It wasn't like the experience with home console games where it could vary greatly. That's not a blanket statement of course but there's definitely a few that were far and away way better.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu Especially since the arcade would always get earlier and much better looking, sounding and playing versions of games. I never heard of (back at that time, now I know ) the ZX Sprctrum or Amstrad CPC. But they were available for the Atari 800 and Apple IIe and Commodore 64. Maybe there was a TRS 80 version. Actually, I really love Tom & Jerry The Movie. Seems to me that there was a gap between your expectations about it being an action platformer (which it isn’t), and what it really is, that is a puzzle platformer. You are not supposed to try and play it like a slow Mario. It’s meant to be played like a fast paced Prince of Persia. The controls are a little stiff, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. I concede that it is an acquired taste, but once you get it, it is very engaging, creative and lots of fun. And I also love the presentation, with great sprites, animation, use of color and a very fun soundtrack.

I had Ghostbusters back in the day. I liked it as well and still do. Thanks to emulation and save states, I finally got to see the end a few years ago. I managed to get to the end a few times as a kid, but never managed to beat it then. The stair section was pretty tough back then. I like the SMS and GG Star Wars. It's not amazing, but it's fun. I've pointed out elsewhere that it shows Tiertex wasn't always horrible. It helps that they were porting an existing game rather than designing their own. I'm glad they toned the difficulty down because the NES version has some massive difficulty spikes. Regarding Robocop and enemies firing off screen, I remember having that issue in Metal Gear Solid on Playstation in spots. Despite the high reviews at the time and how it's considered a Playstation classic, I hate that game. There were other things that brought it down as well, but having to deal with being shot from off screen was one of the earlier red flags. Rambo was and still is one of my SMS favorites. I did have it back in the day. Having gone back to it, I was surprised how much more ahead it felt compared to other overhead run-and-gun games of the time. Back in 1986 and 1987, those games were often brutal. Rambo is tough, but it doesn't feel as primitive to me as other games. This was two years before MERCS hit arcades, so I'm surprised how balanced, playable, and fun Rambo was in its day.
