The Master System was my first games console in the mid 1980s when I was in Junior High. Hang On, Wonder Boy, Thunder Blade, Outrun, Alex Kidd, Golden Axe etc. Absolutely loved it. The 1980s were magical times for kids following entertainment across the board.

Great episode guys, as usual. Here in Brazil, the Master System 1 was identical to the US version, except for the A/V Out that was not present; there is RF of course and a direct composite (1 video and 1 audio RCA outputs) was added on the back by Tec Toy (SEGA oficial retailer here in Brazil). I play/capture only via Power Base on the Mega Drive using RGB and I was very pleased to know that it's a little brighter and saturated, thanks for sharing that comparison Coury! Please keep doing this series, its awesome to see you guys showing true love for outputting the best image on our real consoles. Cheers from Brazil!

SMS is an amazing console and the first console to output RGB natively when everyone else was just offering RF or Composite. It's also backwards compatible with SG-1000 games if you put Roms on a Master EverDrive flash cart and play it on a Master System; not on a Genesis with Power Base Converter unfortunately. Great episode, I'm looking forward for more!

The 8 pin din or oversize looking s video port on the back supports ?Scart? I googled and it looks like a pc monitor output. How can I convert that out put to plug into my LG flat screen?
@Longlius5 жыл бұрын
It should be emphasized that not all scart TVs supported RGB, and it wasn't until the late 90s that the TVs that did came down enough in price to be something that the average consumer could buy. The scart connector was envisioned as an all-in-one format for carrying a video signal, so scart connections can carry anything from an RF signal to component and RGB. It just depends on what your TV supports. There's a weird tendency in the retro community to overromanticize SCART. While it was a better, more coherent standard than what we got in the US, you shouldn't imagine Europeans playing their Mega Drives with full RGB in 1993 or what have you (unless they were wealthy enough to afford a TV that could display RGB video).

Matthew Longley Most, if not all, TVs with SCART input can support RGB. But not all SCART sockets can take RGB. Most can, but not all. However, most Europeans used RF. Although we could’ve been using beautiful RGB, we stuck with the worst of the worst, as most people didn’t know any better.

It's amazing how ahead of their time Sega consoles were regarding the quality of video signals you could tap in right out of the box. The fact that the Master System ouputs RGB natively is crazy. Nintendo, on the other hand, has always been screwing customers in that regard. The NES didn't offer anything better than composite (at the time, offering composite was actually good : but look at what the Master System could offer). For the SNES, some of the revisons offer a blurry RGB picture, and all of them have vertical bars in the middle of the screen when stock (the Genesis, on the other hand, offers crystal-clear RGB). The N64 have a very nasty Anti-Aliasing filter that blurs the picture (meanwhile, the Saturn offers clear RGB, as is always the case with Sega consoles). Thankfully now there are nice solutions for nintendo consoles (i almost cried of joy the first time I played on my RGB modded Nes lol), but they still require work and money to be invested in them, while Sega consoles offer crystal-clear RGB natively on all their consoles, and you have to appreciate that.

Yes, but remember, the RGBs that comes out of Sega systems are unattenuated, so you need to buy the correct SCART or JP21 converter cables with capacitors and resistors in them, to compensate for this. The U.S., at least. For RGB regions (PAL, Japan), this is NOT a worry.

In case someone might need to use an RF modulator on a system but cannot find one, here's a great tip: You can use a standard RCA cable (the same used for composite/component) and plug it into the RF port on the console. Then, you can hook it directly to the coax input on the TV with a dirt cheap adapter (coax on one side, RCA plug on the other). Generally the adapter is called a RCA Female to F Male.

The model I have is a 27AF44 and I got it at good will for 12 dollars. It has Composite, S-Video and Component in on it. . It has big beautiful scanlines and is a flatscreen. In terms of getting the signal to the TV, all the SMS stuff in this episode that was shot off screen was via the Master System's composite. Though I do have a SCART to Component converter on the way to use in the future with it.

Very nice! I've got both the original Master System (3D Glasses set), and the Power Base Converter. Right now, the Power Base Converter works so well that I kind of really don't see the need to even keep the Master Sytem around. That being said, I did run into an issue with the Genesis when I bought a JP-21 RGB cable for it, and that was very ugly 'jail bars'. I did some Googling and learned that these first models of the Genesis are known to have this issue because of the poor design of the video encoding process. Thankfully the fix was fairly simple, involving breaking one of the trace lines on the circuit board of the Genesis. The results were amazing. The jail bars were completely removed, and the picture looked flawless. The drawback is doing this mod removes all other video output from the Genesis, so you either have to live with only RGB (oh the humanity), or rig a toggle switch on the line in the circuit board to be able to turn composite video sources back on.

What you did is very nice and useful, but you might want to check twice the technical details if you want to mention them. For instance, the the box on the RF cable is not the RF modulator, it is just a switch between the game and TV the antenna. The modulator is inside the console. Also composite cannot be modulated into S-video, modulation means modifying a carrier signal amplitude/frequency/phase (usually RF) according to the useful signal (video/audio).

Joshua Rastia [Try4ce] Definitely looking forward to doing the N64 200-level video. It's one of my favorite consoles, because that was the generation when I really started to follow upcoming games and anticipate their release. But I will say, don't expect miracles when it comes to the N64. Unlike PS1, N64 games tend to have a softer image due to anti-aliasing, which is a great effect for consoles that run in 480i and higher, but turns out to not be such a great thing for 240p. RGB modding the N64 does improve the colors and the textures feel like they have a bit more contrast and definition, but it's hardly the revelatory experience that RGB is with say, NES or Genesis.

@@mylifeingaming I have a CSync cable ($35 cable)coming for my Genesis, I'll use my 2 to 1 adapter to try it on the Master System..if it works I'll buy it...man this project is getting expensive...I tried 2 eBay cheap cables and they BOTH gave audio but no video on the SMS...they gave unstable image on the Genesis through the framemeister

+my life in gaming so does the master system power base for the genesis have the same video quality as the first master system or is the power base also better than the first master system model?
@spotsandfriends40528 жыл бұрын
It has better colour in general, mainly due to the Genesis having a better colour. However, the genesis cannot use FM sound on supported cartridges without a new converter that was released about two years ago. Its made by db electronics.

I have honestly never used a weird box thing that screws into the television. Is it an American thing? My English televisions don’t even have a screw on port.

I really should use my Master System more. It's a Master System 2 though. I think even as a kid I only ever saw 1 original MS. I always felt like the system got a bit overlooked. There may not have been so many games that still get talked about now but it could really pump out some decent graphics for the time.

Get it modded, and install Tim worthington's FM mod board as well to add FM sound capability in compatable games

So how about those 480p and 480i consoles? Is it beneficial to use them with the Framemeister?

NicRenee Khaw [Coury] Definitely! Check out some of the other entries in this series and we address the 480i/p consoles a bit.

What game is that game with the fox and hippo punching open eggs? I like the art in it, do you think its a good game?

ShogunGino That was Psycho Fox! Pretty decent game. The team that made this went on to do the superior Decap Attack Starring Chuck D. Head.

Hi Coury and Tryce. @MyLifeInGaming Have you thought of doing a RGB Master Class episode about getting the best picture for the Atari 2600? Looked on your Playlist and couldn't see one. :o Any chance of seeing that episode in the future? Cheers, SIJArts

The French version of the SMS II was still RGB compatible (Peritel) posibly due to some legal requirement (as was the french version of the NES), sadly the rest of europe and the US got the poor deal.

Technically the French NES converted composite to RGB

Two questions: 1.) Regarding best possible picture console, I don't really get it: Did I get something wrong, I think you mention on one hand the Mega Drive with Power Base converter delivers best picture quality, but on the other hand in the summary you state the Master System I delivers the best experience visually? 2.) Is the Mega Drive with Power Base converter also superior to a RGB modded Master System II? I have the latter and so far I'm very satisfied with its picture quality.

Great videos! Are you guys planning to do more console-specific episodes? If so, could you guys do one on the PlayStation?

thegeniusgamer1234 [Coury] We are definitely doing more. Look for a new one on the 21st of the month, in fact! Eventually we'd like to cover all systems possible, and the Playstation is definitely on that list.

I have a question unrelated to the excelent video here: is it possible that you'll making a video about the "PS2-Backwards-Compatibility"-mod for PS3? I remember that someone sold a small board that should make it backwards compatible again and better than every Sony solution at the start of the console. But it could be possible Sony already locked this mod completely out years ago. I really don't know, but it would be interesting to see how good or bad it worked and how video quality turned out.
@mylifeingaming8 жыл бұрын
[Try4ce] I'm actually completely unaware of this. My feeling is that it still wouldn't beat playing on a real PS2, but that is very interesting. I'd like to look into it if this is a thing.

I have a serious question. What does the Power base converter lack that the Master System doesn't?
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
[Coury] Absolutely nothing. I used to use my Power Base Convertor, but now I use my Master System due to convenience - the Power Base won't work when passing through a 32x. Since I have a Genesis 1, I'd have to swap several cables. This way, I can just keep the 32x hooked up all the time.

Great video. I loved the 100 series videos, can't want to see all of the console specific 200 series videos. :) Quick Question: When showing the comparison between composite and RGB in this video is the composite signal being processed by the Framemeister and then sent to your VCC, or is the composite signal running directly to the VCC?
@mylifeingaming9 жыл бұрын
Develitate [Coury] When the composite signal is being processed by the Framemeister we'll specifically say it, like I do before the A/B of Composite vs RGB. It just comes down to the ease of being able to accurately capture a composite signal. Its tougher these days to find a capture card worth anything that will capture from a composite line in. While the Framemeister offers a definite jump even with composite, the difference between it and RGB is still night and day.
@Develitate9 жыл бұрын
***** I assumed as much based on the breakdown of your equipment via RGB102, but I do appreciate the clarification. :) Keep up the good work. MLiG is one of my absolute favorite gaming channels. I'm looking forward to your next video!
