Sega Mega Genesis Drive Arcade with Real Hardware

The Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) is the pinnacle at-home arcade experience so I stuff it into a 2:3 sized custom cabinet with a modded CRT Television that accepts RGB via SCART. This arcade has a Sega 3-button controller built from scratch along with an Arduino driven relay system to enabled a credit mode for coin operated gameplay.
(I build a better Arcade 1-Up with authentic parts from 20 years ago.)

I've been watching alot of DIY Arcade cabinet videos. This is by far the greatest I've seen!!! - Definitly a BIG plus for a RGB CRT. That seems like a must, even though an 4:3 IPS would do the job, a real CRT gives that perfect glowy feel when playing. - Awesome control panel. All from button and stick placements to all the functions. And a huge plus for that custom Astro City look. - The whole shape and angles of the cabinet seems to be just about perfect. Getting it done with CNC must be awesome. The whole video, story telling thing, is just perfect. And awesome inspiration for all arcade builders out there. Future projects that could be fun: - An Arcade Cabinet with MiSTer and a CRT + support for original arcade PCB. - Easy swappable controlpanels, with 4-way joystick/8-way alternatives. 3-fire buttons / 6 or 8 fire buttons. Even a control panel with a spinner would be cool. The most challenging idéa: An Arcade with a rotating CRT that lets you play horizontal / vertical. Anyway, thanks for a great video, I did of course sub to your channel, and I even put notification on aswell. Keep up the good work!!

@@RetroBuiltGames im starting a build based off this build. so far i have collected a sega gen. model 2 , finally got the right power cord and av cables and im getting ready to look for a crt tv. (for leathal enforcers and the justifier) should i try to do this rgb or just connect it up regular . im not building the cabinet until i get the crt so i can know dementions . any advise u have would be awsome.

you could program a button push of the start button to pause the game when the credit runs out... if not credit within timer then the system restarts .... that is actually a really clever way to use old arcade games legally in an arcade... just have to not use licensed art lol especially on Nintendo

@@RetroBuiltGames I already have an RGB modded crt the same size as yours and I have a tank arcade stick that was produced here in Australia that has a 6 button layout so I can just use those internals and make a custom control panel like yours, brilliant idea . The crt definately gives it the authentic feel.

yes absolutely. I've been meaning to do this, but tube CRTs are hard to find in my area. I feel like they were ostracized more than TVs when LCDs took over.

@@RetroBuiltGames hmm it's the opposite where I live, lots of offices are now starting to decommission CRT monitors Since these fuckers last forever people had no reason to get rid of them in an office setting. I guess it's good enough for writing documents and whatnot My dad's office for example still has a bunch of printer servers running windows XP with a CRT.

This is great, but, (and sorry if I missed it) since you mentioned that Genesis 2 is "vanilla", does that mean it doesn't have an audio mod installed like a CCAM/Mega Amp/Triple Bypass? Or it's just a later revision that doesn't have the bad sound?

@@RetroBuiltGames I was thinking more a crt unless the lady gives you more freedom Now a reason I think a dreamcast cabinet is such a cool concept is not because a good some of its librarie is Naomi But recently people noticed the atomiswave uses the exact the same hardware as dreamcast meaning most of its games are not only arcade perfect but a Literal conversion to dreamcast kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6DRmHuAn9KnidU Additionally there are encoder kits that allow you install any buttons and jokestick and use them on dreamcast. Im kinda skeptical on that last video- CTR in the arcade1up. All the shots are obnoxiously close without panning back to see anything past the bezel. I dont doubt you can do it, but the depth of a modest 13in tube is deeper than most arcade1up machines. Installing one implies it is a clean installation and contained within the body. There are HDMI to composite converters; but, DiWHY.

With a crt it's more built to last long hours game time. Second the emulation is so arcade perfect on NBA Jam, Outrun, star wars and Golden Axe: revenge of death ather that they be considered an actual cabaret version of the real cabinets rather then a cheap Imitation

This video is better, it looks more authentic. The 'glow' really completes the feel of an arcade machine. I just dont know why no video shows the inside of the cabinet. a 15in tube is deep. I would assume the install is a game of millimeters. CRT is the way to go!
