The dreamcast was insane, there were so many, maybe not firsts, but immensely important refinements that, as sy said, the technology of the time couldn't keep up with. That whole system was Marty McFly saying "Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are going to love it"

What i like about Dreamcast is how brave Sega was at the time. They did not calculate risks or tried to please everyone. Instead they were extremely creative & productive company at the time. -Even completedly new gaming genres, new graphical styles and innovations popped like shrooms on the rain. I don't think any other system have ever felt so fresh and futuristic as Dreamcast. Just think how insane library of games it would have if console would had lasted 5-6 years on market.

Agreed, even the AVGN said that it was a great system. So at least Sega went out with a bang. In fairness, Sega still makes Sega arcades, the 2 Sega Genesis Mini plug-and-plays, and stuff, so they still made some hardware after getting out of the Console business.
@Angel-Azrael

It was a failure. The biggest problems were PS2 coming with a DVD and most important, it was cracked at the biggining. All the games could be easily compied and burnt into regular CDS.

The saturn had a menu, internal clock, and network connection for online play. Saturn Bomberman for example could host many players. Saturn League is website that last time I checked still acts as a forum for making gaming sessions.

Everything the Dreamcast touted as a feature was something that some other console had first. Even more embarrassing was that it lacked capabilities that other consoles of it's same generation had on launch...
@vandalg282

To be fair, it did it better than the rest. Online play actually worked and was highly functional. Saturn's menu was clunky and slow. Internal clock was done before Saturn, but again, not as well as Dreamcast.

There was nothing like Shenmue when it came out in '99 on the Dreamcast. If Metal Gear Solid on the PS1 made me felt like games can be like cinematic movie experiences, Shenmue made me felt like I was playing a real world Sim that felt life like for the time. In some ways the art style still holds up till this day.

@@jasondomican1991 yeah man, personally,there hasn't been a game since Shenmue that made me recaptured that europhic feeling of playing something so awe inspiring,innovative and captivating all at once. It blew my mind back when i was 14 from the graphics,gameplay and music. It felt like I was witnessing something from the comfort of my couch that nobody had access to and only a few knew about it. There are some games that came close to recapturing that europhic feeling like Metal Gear Solid, The Witcher 3,The last Of Us,Bioshock and Mass Effect to name a few and there have been games that took the formula of what Shenmue created and surpassed and even perfected it but there hasn't been a gaming experience quite like Shenmue.

The Dreamcast's controller wasn't comfortable to use for me, which really killed any interest I had in it as a kid, but as an adult it does seem to have some of the best ports of certain games and some random Sega gems. Still a terribly awkward controller though in my opinion.

I had a Saturn and it was an amazing console. Never had a Dreamcast but I have recently... *Experienced* it. And honestly? Lovely graphics, whimsy abound, unique game ideas, it's an amazing console. The problems it suffered was 1) the games were more costly, 2) the games it had wasn't all amazing (one I'm currently playing, Blue Stinger, is... Well, it's got some very janky parts, like the voice acting), 3) the competition was insanely strong. Also, the GDI issue had another problem: you can't use them anywhere now. If you have an emulator and still have the CDs for the Dreamcast, those CDs will not work cos disc drives don't read GDIs. But if you have a PS1 disc or a Sega Saturn disc, both can be used with emulators perfectly fine.

Most of the Dreamcast library played in a 480p output which looked way better than any of the consoles before and even some of the same games that eventually released on the PS2 like DOA2, MVC2, and Resident Evil Code Veronica

UK and other European gamers have so much to thank Sega for with the 60hz. So many bad PAL conversions trashed great games like Sonic and Metal Gear Solid which both ran slower than their US/Japan counterparts. Sega already did copy protection with the Saturn by building in a processor into the CD drive and a thing called a 'wobble' on the discs. Like the PS1 mod chips were used to bypass the copy protection.
