Yes, I too stared at the advertisements and have wanted a Neo Geo ever since they came out when I was 10 yrs old, then about 6 yrs ago the opportunity arose for me to own my own MVS and I jumped on it. It's still an expensive system to own and especially collect for now since all the consolized MVS machines have come out (Since when does Ninja Combat, a terrible game that went for $20 for YEARS suddenly fetch $120+???), but I love it.

Yeah it was and still is kinda expensive but it was not supposed to be put for sale, instead SNK planned to rent the console in Japan. Then seeing the price lists in full page ads in video game magazines and immediately believing the hype, as my allowance in kindergarten was two quarters a week. Seemed “forever unattainable”. With “best in genre” gorgeous titles like Sengoku 3 (which I still consider to be the best animated beat em up prior to the 7th gen consoles), other timelessly gorgeous sprites and unique gameplay in the Samurai Shodown & LAST BLADE series, and incredibly fun titles like Shock Troopers & the Metal Slug series….and a fighting game near the level of Street Fighter’s Alpha series and III-series in Garou Mark of the Wolves …. All which have aged extremely well, and are still every bit as fun to this day…. …it’s no mystery why it still retains its grail status to this day. Owning a Neo Geo and tons of those huge cartridges…. It’s such a showpiece … a simultaneously vintage yet futuristic-Ish showpiece … Sh!t is like owning a Delorean lol

I freakin’ love Garou: Mark of the Wolves (my personal #1 fav for the Neo Geo along with other platforms it was on) and the Last Blade. And also not forgetting the Samurai Shodown (check out the reboot man! I got it on PS4 and I have no regrets buying it. I want a sequel of it to be on PS5) or King of Fighters (wanting KOF XV on PS5) series, these games are very enjoyable to this day. The Japanese arcade-style fighting game style is pretty much perfect today and there will be plenty of those for generations to come.

Some Neo Geo love yes! Just wanted to share: Most people (like me) got exposed to Neo Geo with the big red cabinets, but really got deep through emulation. If interested in playing on actual hardware. For those same people who grew up, and (hopefully) have some disposable income... the 30 year+ AES consoles will definitely need to be modded and repaired (ie. recapped) after purchase. They definitely weren’t designed strong like an SNES or Genesis (but even these stock consoles will also die eventually). Cloned MVS units are easily found on ebay, cheaper than an AES, but either way, will need some technical know-how of how to consolize them. You can find heavily priced (already) consolized MVSs too. But for something more quality.... Watch out for the Behar bros CMVS coming soon! And we know AES carts are more expensive than MVS. No introduction needed. But you can reduce that price heavily with flash carts. Terraonion is the Rolls Royce, but Darksoft’s version has been steadily upgrading itself. Happy holidays

In a similar way to Neo Drift Out, there is just something about playing this with an arcade stick that makes this game 1000x better. It's an amazing game and tied with Tiger Woods 2004 for me as best golf game of all time.

I couldn't afford any 8 or 16 bit system around their release time, only after 2 or 3 years had passed. Owning a Neo Geo was absolutely out of question. So I went to the arcade to play SNK games. A bunch of those games were jaw dropping, something impossible to be found in other consoles. It was very nice to see the birth and development of such great franchises like Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, Fatal Fury, The King of Fighters. Such an amazing console that almost nobody could have at home

This is a console I so desperately want in my collection. However the cost of entry for some of the lower end "decent" titles is still expensive. For me, emulation is the only real viable option. That and the various compilation titles and releases on other systems. Great video.

SENGOKU 3 been my favorite NEO GEO title since I knew anything about NEO GEO. Noise Factory spritework was second only to CAPCOM’s late 90’s/early00’s 2d spritework. And co-sign SHOCK TROOPERS being another top ten title, what an absolutely dynamite 90’s “diagonal strafe” Rambo maniac Run’n’Gun. Great pace change after some Metal Slug. Sam Sho 1-6 are easily SNK’s greatest fighting games IMHO, even greater and more timeless than Garou, or the newer/graphically superior KOF 13. Sam Sho just had so much character, no matter where you looked. 🤌🏼

I bought a Neo Geo new when it launched and consider it in the top 5 consoles ever made, the games are just awesome. Now in that time me and my friends would get together on weekends, pizza, beer, and have a blast. Art of Fighting 2 and Baseball Stars 2 were two of our favorites. the last cool thing about Neo Geo and games of this era in general is the playability is just through the roof and the controls are not overly complicated. I still have friends over to my much more advanced game room now and what do you think we play? Xbox one? PS4? Nope. The classics, NeoGeo, 3DO, Genesis, etc as well as the Mama cabinet. You can’t beat these games, their a blast with friends.

I've been playing a lot of arcade stuff lately, with a lot of Neo Geo among that. I was playing Metal Slug 5 a couple of times in the last few days. Shock Troopers was a few days before that. I played a lot of King of Fighters '97 and '98 over the weeks before, along with the two Last Blade games. I was surprised neither of the Last Blade games made your list(the first would be on my list), but I totally understand that it's your personal list, so it's not just about game quality, and that it's very tricky to actually narrow down the Neo Geo library. I liked your list a lot and agreed with many of your views. When I saw that Garou was number two, I knew Turf Masters had to be the top pick, and it's an excellent game. King of the Monsters is a quarter muncher and not going to be to everyone's taste, but I loved it when it was new. I put some time into it a few years back. I was able to figure out some exploits and could beat, I think, five opponents on one credit on the standard difficulty. It was fun to figure out how to do it and get through the game with just a few credits. I still like that game and they captured the Godzilla feel in the presentation. Sengoku 3 is one of my favorite beat-em-up games. It has better sprite work than most in the genre and I really like the game-play mechanics. I have no issue with the game's length and pacing on standard difficulty as some do. It requires a bit of a shift in tactics from other games in the genre, as I find Sengoku 3 to be more defensive than most, but I enjoy having to manage the enemy waves and overall tougher enemies than usual. I played Sengoku 2 a week or so ago as well. Thinking of it as a beat-em-up game, I find it lacking, but thinking of it as just a simple action game made it more enjoyable. In early 1998, I remember a friend of mine brought me to a local comic shop to check out their Street Fighter 3 cabinet and the game's impressive animation and sprites. It was impressive, but I didn't like Capcom's visual style in Street Fighter once they started the Alpha series. However, right next to the SF3 was a familiar red cabinet, and it was running King of Fighters '97. I loved the sprite style. The animation was impressive in its own right. I was immediately impressed with SNK's approach to the genre. Even directly next to the technically superior SF3, it was KOF that captured my imagination. When I got home, I immediately went online to find out if KOF '97 was coming to the Saturn, and it was a couple of months later. I love that edition and still play it. With that said, I agree that '98 is even better, and I play both games. I really love the play mechanics of KOF at that point. I always feel limited when I don't have the evasive roll available in other games. Shock Troopers is a reliable and enjoyable game that I can return to whenever I need to play something fun, but have nothing specific in mind. Aside from it being a lot of fun, the length of a run comes in a bit shorter than a lot of other arcade games, so it's easy to fit in. The visual style is great as well. Metal Slug is such a great series, one of my all-time favorites. The first one is still excellent. Parts 1, X and 5 are my favorites. Great to see you talk about this great platform and sharing your list. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts throughout. Thank you.

@@simonbelmont548 Saturn is my #1 and I've owned multiple systems from every generation over the last 25 years. It's all about the games that you connected with the most. The total library of good games for a system is irrelevant to an individual player. My favorite games in my lifetime (40 years old), are on Saturn. Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force 3, Dragon Force, Fighters Megamix, Guardian Heroes, SEGA Rally, Daytona, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Nights, Bomberman... Etc.. It had stellar support from many of the greatest Japanese developers during their arguable prime...(capcom, konami, squaresoft, irem, hudson, natsume etc). So a claim like that isn't even possible let alone true. But yes the Gen/MD is a true gem.

Charlie Cat - Absolutely! I remember the day vividly - I went to our local DieHard Gamefan video game store, and I traded in my Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Super Nintendo and over 100+ games to purchase a Neo-Geo AES w/ two controllers, Magician Lord and Nam ‘75. The following week I purchased Samurai Shodown. My friends envied me. Lol In fact, my friends came over all the time to play Samurai Shodown. My next cart purchase was Mutation Nation; I loved this game (and still do). I eventually purchased The King of Monsters, Last Resort, Baseball Stars, Super Sidekicks 2, Ninja Combat, World Heroes 2 Jet and The Super Spy. I was hooked on the Neo-Geo before buying the AES. I always played the 4-slot MVS cab my local arcade had, which was tucked away in a dark corner. Then came games like Kabuki Klash, Metal Slug, The King of Fighters ‘94 and Pulstar. It was (and still is) gaming bliss. And thanks to game developers like NG Dev Team and Neobitz, the mighty Neo-Geo continues to live on!

I loved these Neo Geo machines at my local arcade chain (Diversions) in San Antonio back in the old day. The only store that actually sold them was Babbage's in the upscale North Star Mall. My older brother actually used to work there and would bring home new Genesis games over the weekend then re-shrink wrap them. Bringing home one of them bad boys was off the menu! Samurai Showdown was my game 😁 I actually have the US and International mini arcade systems. Nephews really liked them at Christmas last year.
