Gotta repeat my story again: It was the 90s, I worked at toys r us. Well one day I was unloading the truck when I seen a bunch of bigger sega labeled boxes. After tearing one open I was amazed to see a new sega system out, the Saturn! This secrecy could never happen today and thats why it was such a joy to live through the early times of gaming. Back then there were such things of true surprises.
@opaljk4835Ай бұрын
Given that it ended up being detrimental to the console in the long run, I think maybe that secrecy is a good thing to have lost lol
@EdvinDzafcicАй бұрын
@@opaljk4835that clearly is a ignorant take, as if that was the cause of the failure of Sega Saturn state side. Not the horrible hardware design, terrible developer relations, and infighting between US and Japanese HQ.
@MitsuragaАй бұрын
@@EdvinDzafcic As it turns out, you're both wrong. The hardware was not poorly designed, and the surprise launch probably didn't hurt the Saturn all that much, in the long run. About the only thing it caused was a software drought throughout the Summer of 1995 that would've never happened if they'd stuck to the original September launch day. Also, by all accounts aside from Tom Kalinske's, SEGA of Japan wanted its American branch to succeed. There was no attempt at undermining anybody, and nobody aside from Tom who was in the company at the time seems to engage in any such finger-pointing.
@caseycuАй бұрын
@@Mitsuragathe surprise launch ruined relationships with some retailers to the point they would never carry a Sega product again, and damaged relationships with developers who thought they were making a launch title to the point where they didn’t think twice about cancelling Saturn games as soon as sales slumped. I think the surprise launch was a bigger deal than you might think.
@MitsuragaАй бұрын
And I think it was less of a big deal that you or most people seem to think. Outside of KB Toys, there's hardly any evidence to support that claim. It's mostly just a thing that Tom Kalinske said, and everyone just went along with that.

The Saturn, PS1 and N64 all had a distinct feel to them, personality and even their libraries follow this line of thought. To me, neither of these feel like old machines, they feel great and have a lot to offer. Sometimes I see current games and it's amazing that what we wanted during the 90's was 'real' visuals, that's what FMV games tried to do as well, and now we have almost photorealistic capable hardware, the charm of what video game graphics/visuals was became a lost art, I mean, when video games looked like video games, be that limitations or not. But then again, this was written on the wall. Yes, I do enjoy many new games, but as far as video games visuals and sound goes, the charm of true custom hardware isn't forced, it's just how they are. I hope you do a similar homage to the upcoming PS1 30th anniversary as well.

I'll never forget it, 1995 I got the Saturn for a whopping $399 also along with the Virtua Stick that I believe costed $79.99. Couldn't afford to get extra games but that was alright because it came packaged with the original 1st Virtua Fighter. I believe that's also the only US Saturn title that's packaged like the standard Japanese jewel cases. I remember it also coming with a demo cd that showed the first Panzer Dragoon, Clockwork Knight and I believe Bug and my mind was blown looking at these new next generation graphics at the time. I still have that very same Saturn along with the packed in VF to this day. SEGA Saturn will forever be my favorite system of all time.

@@KC-kp4vhOnce you add the tax in plus with the arcade stick you might as well say $500 total for everything and yes I feel that's correct. Fortunately for me at the time I had enough to splurge on new a console that I couldn't wait to get my hands on. I played Virtua Fighter all night that day.

$399 felt very expensive and out of reach in 1995. I was a kid, so I wasn't even thinking about Saturn as a realistic acquisition. However, the Dreamcast released for $199 in 1999. It was an incredibly affordable price point and the games were numerous and amazing! I was blown away by how well Sega launched the Dreamcast! The Saturn launch and that whole Saturn era in the U.S. was abysmal. But for the people who could get both Saturn and Playstation, they are very lucky.
@Ruylopez778Ай бұрын
I used to flip through Sega magazines at the time and dream about a Saturn (too expensive for me). And then almost convinced myself the 32x was good enough to the fill the gap... knowing that wasn't true. Ended up waiting and waiting until the N64. Probably because when I had the Genesis, I pined for the SNES games instead. Then while I had fun on the N64, I pined for the Sega/Playstation catalogue. Then I got the Dreamcast and PS2. It's really a pity that the Saturn and Dreamcast didn't fully reach their potential, or should I say the perception of them meant many gamers missed out. But those early days of 3D, staring at screenshots of VF and dreaming about a CD based console was a magical time.

The Saturn, PSX, N64, Dreamcast and PS2 era was really a golden age of innovation, charm and creativity, from the first early steps with true 3D gaming in the home, to decent arcade conversions, to 3D becoming the de facto way games are played. Everything since (hardware and software) feels iterative, and many of those titles created in that era still remain all time classics. I don't understand why no one is making a "new" updated Saturn/Dreamcast console with an updated version of the games for HD already.

I will never forget walking in to the Toys R Us in Mountain View, CA in 1995 and was shocked to see not only a Sega Saturn kiosk with Panzer Dragoon running, but it was already available for sale - 6 months ahead of the announced release date! To all you Sega fans out there including Sega Lord X: Bless you for defending and redefining the Saturn's reputation to modern audiences and not let the other competitors avoid accountability for slandering the hardware's capability in 2D-3D gaming. 🙏🙏 To my parents: I am very thankful you guys worked hard to get us this system and allowed us to experience gaming's first 'official' 32-bit hardware where many brands have failed.
